Alaskan oil trifecta in play?

Is there anything BP can't screw up?

This is one of those articles I have to just refuse to believe.

Errant snowplow causes power outage, eh? Didn't Enron already try that one?

Could this have been prevented with redundancy in an apparently critical part of the system?

WIN. That's why you can't believe that a snowplow could destroy a single power line that would take out TWO oil fields.

Is this anything like that power outage related failure from a couple of years back? You know, the one caused by a technician leaving that one single motor control on manual instead of automatic?
'cause if it is, we're so screwed.

I think I already know what monday's news on oil trading will say-Oil prices up on news of power outage of Prudhoe Bay which reduced oil production for a few days.

Greedy investors flip out over anything. Pity the government won't regulate them to stop this nonsense.

Yeah, because unregulated private industry has done such a bang up job as of late.

Asshat. Sorry if that sucks for your highly unethical stock portfolio, now blow me.

gas will reach 7$/gal.
you will not be able to buy fish anymore.
only 2 airliners will be able to avoid bankruptcy.

citizen's need to stand up and actually fight our government with guns and bombs etc. literally fight and die for this.

we need to hit the restart button before they push the power button on us all.

What's harder in this story to believe

- A single snowplow controls the fate of pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil in Alaska...or

- In this era of global warming, Alaska is having a blizzard in the middle of May.

If you think industry is unregulated, you're a fool. The major oil companies love regulations because it helps them monopolize the market by raising barriers to entry. All you do when you increase regulation is increase cooperation between corporations and the government, meaning that we get screwed over.

And if you think electing Obama or Nader or McCain or whoever else is going to suddenly end corruption, you are truly an idiot.

Hmmm.. Just in time. Monday is coming up and it's about time I start getting My excuse together.
Hello big-boss-man. I won't be in today cuz an errant snowplow is preventing My egress.

Oil Futures are Physical Delivery, not Cash Settlement. If all the oil is being delivered and all the oil is being consumed, then the price is correct.

Its not the market's fault that you don't accept the fact that the United States consumes 1/4th of the world's oil production and that we have to import 70% of it as part of an overall trade deficit. We don't control the farking oil price and we aren't entitled to oil. The other countries who have governments that pursue sounder economic and monetary policies can, you know, actually *pay* the oil producers without a trade deficit with their relatively strong currencies.

HAHA! The Congress and the FED are farking you over with their stupid policies and regulations! Make sure you dance along to their tune and blame the businessmen like a Good Citizen. Remember, A Strong Dollar is in the National Interest of the United States, Its all the Speculators, and Ignorance is Strength.

Besides, I thought high oil prices were what we wanted; it means we will use less oil, save the environment, and start bringing alternative forms of energy online. Thats what we wanted right? Even now we want to windfall profits tax the oil companies, make oil more expensive, and invest in alternatives.

OH SNAP, now oil is more expensive, its time to develop alternatives, and it is actually affecting your own lifestyle you don't like it so much anymore. Give me back my Dictator Supporting, War Necessitating, Emission Producing, Gloriously Cheap OIL. I am unwilling to make any meaningful changes to my own lifestyle; please Government, save me from my own weakness and frailty, only You with your unlimited Power can Save Me.

Yup, giving the Government more power is definitely the answer. How about... NO. They've done enough to fark us already.

Was there sufficient cynicism, disdain, and FARK in that post?

I'll try to be more civil in the future.

I came here to point out that most Alaskan oil ships to the Asian market. But as someone has said this, and reduncy is so expensive in Alaska, I won't.

FTA: Oil production at Prudhoe Bay ... halted on Friday when a vehicle clearing snowdrifts damaged the power supply to processing centers ... With a blizzard hampering visibility, the operator of the front loader struck a compressed-air line at the central power station

Um... huh? Do Alaskans really use snowplows in the middle of a blizzard? I kinda thought you were supposed to wait til the snow stopped falling before clearing it away.

I mean, it'd be like me raking the yard on the second week of October when only half the leaves have fallen.

Wicked Libertarian 2008-05-11 10:01:23 AM
The free market will solve this problem, either with higher mpg cars or cheaper biofuels (no, not corn) as long as the government stays out of the way, which won't happen.
