Not rock bottom?

Well to be fair, at least she won't have to worry about rain on her wedding day.

I'd hit it.

Ironically.

Seems like she makes better records when she's feeling blue, anyway.

I enjoy this on an ironic level

Irony...like goldy and bronzy only made of iron.

The_Pink_Pimp 2008-05-10 11:24:18 AM
Let me get this straight.... she's upset because her former boyfriend ditched her for Scarlet Johansen?

Like what guy wouldn't do that?

except for blind guys...

maybe.

I agree. She's so much better when she's bitter and jaded.

A song ostensibly about irony that has no irony in it? What a whore! You know there's a word for that!

This.

Less hippy-la-la, more bitter angry biatchiness please Alanis.

Good thing she opens up a month before her new album comes out.

She is one of these artists that talks about how she once thought that artists couldn't be happy. I think she misses the point. I'm certainly pro-contentment, but by that time it may be wise to re-think one's career if you are really passionate. It's sort of like sports. You can play professional until your mid-thirties or maybe a little longer, but soon changes in one's body and better, younger players make sustaining a career impossible.

There are a lot of cheesy, content songwriters/muscians but they don't often come in how she came in. I'm so glad that she found herself and everything, but man her music is just awful now, in my opinion. By no means do I consider sales to be indicative of much, but her third album, Jagged Little Pill, which was her breakout album sold over 30 million worldwide. Her fifth album, Under Rug Swept, has sold less than 4 million.

She has to be true to herself, but I think she is really missing the point about her producing great music while having issues in her life.

Oddly enough, one of the things that drew me to Bluegrass music was it's melancholy tone, but it never seems whiny. I've always felt that bluegrass singers avoid depressive cliches while being true to themselves. I could compare Alison Krauss to Alanis, but Alison is not a songwriter.

Maybe she'll return to the manufactured angst that made her popular in the first place. Or maybe she'll go even further back and start singing Canadian pop music again.

Never could stand her.

I never cared much for her music. I actively disliked her during high-school, but that's mainly because we were both in the same city and she was Ottawa's darling teen pop queen. Later, I found her tunes kinda catchy but mostly forgettable.

But then I saw her parody of My Humps (^), and I thought it was brilliant. And then she did a descent job with the national anthem at a playoff Senators game. So she's ok by me.

I think that rock bottom describes my level of caring, right about now.

You just made my head asplode.

pummisher 2008-05-10 07:54:04 PM
That's the point of the song. She would sing a line about something coincidental or circumstantial and then ask "Isn't it ironic? Don't cha think?"

Maybe it was an in joke about someone who can't identify irony properly.

She still is annoying.

Antidamascus 2008-05-10 08:13:01 PM
One day I will get a link greenlit using irony incorrectly just so I can watch all the people come in to correct it.

It's gonna be great.

I think it was just a case of a young songwriter being in way over her head. It's a shame no one stepped up and told her. Just like it's a shame when Jewel got owned over using words improperly.

Sarcasticus 2008-05-10 10:04:19 PM
I went to the same high school as Alanis (not at the same time... so I'm not getting a kick out of anything) and I was taught English by Mr. Aldwinkle. That guy was so farked up on uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... that it's no wonder Alanis doesn't know what Irony is.

/Also, she was on You Can't Do That On Television, which frightened me as a child.

theurge14 2008-05-11 01:38:45 AM
Rock bottom would be Alanis coming over to my apartment at 3am to use her bare hands to wipe my ass when I run out of TP. Since she hasn't done that yet I don't think she's hit rock bottom.

Really? Well she just left my place so maybe she's on her way...

Would so hit that. I loves me some Alanis. Big time. Ever since first vid showed up on the mtv.

I'd love to date Alanis. You know what she would do in a theatre, don't you?

markiedog 2008-05-11 08:53:55 PM
I'd go to the theater with her!

She always has been tiresome.

She's cool in my book, but her fans are damn irritating. Always whining about boys and self-diagnosing their mental illnesses.

/yack.
