Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The only problem is that Jim Webb has a lot of work to do in the Senate. He's the single best weapon vets have in government.

I'd like to see him as Veep, but he can probably do more good in the Senate.

If any man can transform the Democratic Party into the party of the true majority, he can.

Sun God [TotalFark] 2008-05-10 04:42:50 AM
IF Obama wins, he should choose a relatively unknown running candidate. Probably a current or former senator from a swinging red state. Max Baucus springs to mind.

shidekigonomo [TotalFark] 2008-05-10 04:45:25 AM
I saw this suggested a while ago by a blogger and the possibility has intrigued me ever since.

NewportBarGuy, I agree that Webb is invaluable in the Senate, but as VP, he'd still have close ties there, and I'd argue that the bully pulpit exposure of a veep is far greater than that of a first-term US senator.

Sun God: Max Baucus springs to mind.

Might be ok, but I think the tradition says that Obama needs a Southerner on the ticket.

So, Webb is a very good choice.

He's not going to have the same power as Cheney, Obama will ensure that, as he should

I was early in calling for Webb as veep, I think he plugs all the perceived holes Obama has. As long as he can get his GI Bill update through in this session, I'm fine with it.

I'm a huge Obama fan, but I'm an even bigger Webb fan. In my mind, that is the perfect combo. Webb is a helluva strong attack dog, and he has the bone fides to back it up.

He doesn't have a leg to stand on.

/Why, yes, I am going to hell.
//That campaign against him was the sickest thing I have ever seen.

Obama has won all of the Deep South states. So, I think he needs a Corn Belt VP choice, if he wins.

I think you're thinking of Max Cleland(p)

If not, then I need someone to explain the joke to me...

As a vet, I want Webb in the Senate.

Obama should pick an unknown or someone who's got a quiet history who's older than he is, white and from the south.

Only among the Democrats. All the anti-nubians voted in the Republican primary or didn't vote.

The real contest will be much different.

That is true. And unless he and his people are stupid, they're thinking all of the same things.

I like Webb

But I would be happier if Chuck Hagel would accept

A republican from Nebraska that does not like McCain

mikemoto [TotalFark] 2008-05-10 07:05:55 AM
This will sound like a strange pick but I read a compelling comment somewhere that Obama should pick Dick Gephart as his running mate. He balances him out in terms of age, appeal to older voters , and union support.

Echoic 2008-05-10 07:21:58 AM
Nope. Obama should pick Chuck Hagel.

Chuck Hagel is a badass, and I've seen a lot of hints coming from both Hagel (in his new book) and Obama that it's a definite possibility. Hagel, for anyone who doesn't know, is an anti-war Republican that has worked with Obama in the past and is leaving his seat in 2008. They'd be a perfect match. Don't count it out.

I should really read the thread first.

Anyway, Obama/Hagel is my dream ticket.

I, for one, would seriously consider this ticket. I would also like to see former Virginia governor Mark Warner considered as the VP candidate.

I'm going to do some research on him, too. Thanks for the heads-up, folks.

As much as I despise Ron Paul, I know 2 people who would vote for that ticket...my mom and one of my sisters. It's the only way Obama will get their vote as well (believe me I've tried to sway them).

Out of curiosity, and because I am admittedly ignorant on the topic, is her husband legally out of the question, having served two terms as president?

Obama: Jim Webb

Seriously what a perfect choice, not only does he make up for the demographics obama misses, equalize if not trump McCain's war record, seriously put VA into play for general election (bigger than West Virginia...lol), but he also represents a lot of the same values of honest and accountable government that makes Obama such a good candidate.

Gephardt: egh... seriously? what an unexciting choice...

Hagel: badass choice, but i don't think he'd leave his party. It truely would make his unity/reach across the aisle arguments

When Webb was Secretary of the Navy, he made what were perceived as derogatory remarks about women in the military. Tim Russert asked him about it during his senate race against Allen, and his response was pretty lackluster. I like Webb, and in principle I think he'd be a kick-ass VP, but Obama already has some work to do with democratic women and I think Webb might make that more difficult.

I know the VP only ha sso much power. But despite the dems running as R's in th eapst few years, isn't he really a Repuublican? I know he hdislikes GWB, but he may be too far right for Obama..and that means anyone right of the Kennedy Klan...K.

Won't his pedophile fantasies come back to haunt him? I am surprised the people of VA went for the My-caca guy over the macaca guy.

Legally, I suspect it is fine. The amendment only says he can't be President again, and the succession law covers that contingency.

Now, as for it being political suicide...

As to following tradition, we need a Veep who can live up to what we've come to expect from Cheney, especially the swearing.

Cheney, with vast experience and service in two stints as Secretary of Defense, seemingly certified Bush's competence.

I regret that I was one of those who felt this way.

It seems like a lifetime ago that I could have considered Cheney a positive for Bush.

Sure, when you suck worse than dog crap, aligning yourself with dog crap would make you look slightly better. But the scary part is that Cheney actually makes Bush look worse.

I wouldn't say Cheney makes Bush look worse, but Cheney certainly has a large lead in the creepy old evil dude category.

Also, put me down for an Obama/Webb ticket.

VP does nothing for your electibility. It's gotta be a white man or woman (although Richardson might be the exception, he has a lot of experience in FP and he is latino). Webb is interesting, but doesn't have a lot of experience. I am thinking Biden (although he called him Articulate), Dodd, Kathleen Siebles (sp? Kan. Gov.).

Obama has won all of the Deep South states.
He won the Democratic Primary, newsflash for you, a Democrat winning the Democratic primary doesn't tell you jack about what will happen in the general.

That is true
Exit polls say your both morans. Sorry, but the whole "Only Republicans are racists" has been proved to be as full of shiat as most of the rest of the stereotypes of the parties.

Why would he leave his party? If it happens it would be a better choice to stay Republican. Talk about a great message, "THIS is how you reach across the aisle and work together."

Legally, I suspect it is fine.

Well, according to the Fark legal society, nope. The 12th Amendment says "no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President." The 22nd Amendment says "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.".

There's some argument, but the legalese seems to be that being elected to the VP position, the 'alternate President' as it were, is enough to violate the 22nd, thereby violating the 12th.

Anyone that thinks Obama is going to pick a Republican, I'd say, take that thought and assassinate it from your mind.

Safer a Republican than a Clinton. She already has experience with snipers, after all.
