I've had a crush on J.B.'s wife for a while now. And yes, he can rock with that bad-ass slide of his.

I really dug that. Some interesting stuff I saw at his Wikipedia page:

In 1985 Junior invented a double-necked guitar, with some assistance from Michael Stevens. Junior called the instrument his "guit-steel". When performing, Junior plays the guitar by standing behind it, while it rests on a small podium/music stand. The top neck on the guit-steel is a traditional 6-string guitar, while the lower neck is a full-size lapsteel guitar for slide playing. Brown has two guit-steels for recording and live work.

The original instrument, dubbed "Old Yeller", has as its standard 6-string guitar portion the neck and pickups from Brown's previous stage guitar, a Fender Bullet. The second guit-steel, named "Big Red", has a neck laser-copied from the Bullet neck, but in addition to electric guitar pickups, both the standard and lapsteel necks use an identical Sho-Bud lapsteel pickup. There is a pocket in the upper bout of the guitar to hold the slide bar when it is not in use.

I dunno... Junior Brown and Alison Krauss sounds like my iTunes playlist on shuffle any given day.

/Helps run sound at The Ark (where that video was recorded). Junior's playing there again next month. Dang straight I'm working there that day.

Gosh subby, youre just now figuring this out? I got to see JB in Gruene, Texas. Amazing show. My friend and I got there about 2 hours early just so we could get a "seat" (standing room only) by the stage. We were actually sitting on the edge of the stage by the beginning of the show. I lost the hearing in my left ear for a week. Guitsteel Blues is a fave.

Song list, for those who care:

Malaguena
Spirit in the Sky
You Really Got Me
Heartbreaker/(w/out Livin' Lovin' Maid)
Johnny B. Goode
Sunshine of your Love
Foxy Lady
The Wind Cries Mary

Alison Krauss is easy on the eyes, but I can't stand that freakin' little girl coo of her singing.

Hmmm is it 'spirit in the sky' or is it 'Tush'?

Man oh MAN! that sumbiatch can play. He's here next month and Im going!

I've seen him twice and he was great both times. My favorite surprise moment from one of his shows is when he so absolutely rocked Purple Haze that even Jimi would have given him props.

Seconed, in a big way!

Some of his shredding gets old for me, but I am not a big shread-head anyway. However, I really like the stuff in the vein of Surf Medley and his boogies and honkey tonks.

Truly awesome. Seen him twice and would see him again at the drop of a hat. If he comes to your town, just go go go!!!

Also, Alison Krauss doesn't need the press. She's super-talented, of course, but 75% of her catalog immediately puts me to sleep. The new thing with Robert Plant is tasty, though.

Epic WIN.

Junior Brown is an AMAZING entertainer - I own all his albums and have seen him live more times than I can count, but I've never seen him do this medley...very cool!

If you like Junior Brown, check out Dale Watson...different style, but both are Texas-based and VERY true to their roots.

That was nice, but if he's only going to work the guitar neck, I like him better on something like "Sugar Foot Rag" (nice "drum" solo!)

But I really like him when he's going back and forth. Like this, for instance:

My Wife Thinks You're Dead -- if I close my eyes, I'd guess he was playing a pedal steel.

Sweet moustache
, Junior. ("Lifeguard Larry")

Seen him a few times now, and he'll be back through this way in a month or two. Three shows at the casino lounge, same as the last couple times he played there. The first night is packed but you can usually get into the lounge, then the next two nights it's loaded full with people standing around the door to listen. And they're free shows, which amazes me.

I was production for one of his shows and he was having a Bad Sound Day. Wasn't the acoustics of the venue (they were excellent), FoH, or monitors- JB couldn't get his guitar/amp sound dialed-in for some reason although he was using exactly the same set up as all his other shows. He was cranky and pissy to all of us, blew off the Meet and Greet, and wouldn't sign autographs for the fans. Cut his show short and left the venue while still in his stage clothes to go back to his hotel and pout.

Local crew (me) actually packed up his amp and put his guitar(s) away- he left it in his dressing room face-down on the table with the cable still connected and trailing across the floor.

We didn't even get any swag.

Hope others had a better experience at his show.

bigbabysurfer : (Junior Brown is)Texas-based
JB lives in his wife's hometown of Jenks, OK, just across the river from Tulsa. He used to teach guitar at Rogers State College in Claremore (just down the road). And if memory serves, he was born somewhere in Arizona.

He's great, but he's no Unknown Hinson.

Thanks Smitty. LOVE the JB, even though I believe I've seen every video posted on the youtubes at least a hundred times each.

I have a pic here somewhere hanging out with JB after a show at the Gibson Lounge in Memphis w/ Buddy Miles on drums that night.

Wasn't his best show ever, but I'll never forget it.

Let me guess, a Leon Redbone video gets the green next?

I'll be thanking whomever smittys that also.
