He just lost my vote.

NOBODY better take away Hawaii's status as last among equals.

Nobody.

I confuse the number of states and the number of Heinz varieties a lot too. Perfectly understandable.

Golden comment:

Forget the "slip-up"; there is no excuse, he is/was a teacher. I think the real hurry to close Hillary down is he simply is exhausted - and there is no room for exhaustion when you want to be the President of the United States in this day and time. I think - just like his party constituents and campaign folks (academia U.S.A), he is tired of allowing a woman to think she could take the White House and she needs to stay in her place. Forget all of that fluff he comes up with about "liking" Hillary. I, for one, can see through it. That glass ceiling that we have supposedly pierced was actually a dream turned nightmare. Ironically, women are the dominant population in the United States. When are we going to make these "good old boys" accept us?? I am totally disgusted with the super delegates also. They are nothing but pawns looking to bow to nothing but pressure. Where is this country going? We need to let the super delegates "go". I do not like the way they interfere with the popular vote. I see litigation regarding Michigan and Florida... and rightfully so.

Bitter much?

Just for fun: Let's pick a random Social Security number and have an army of reporters follow that person 24/7 for a couple of years. Maybe then we'll stop pretending our politicians need to be perfect like Us.

/Pretty sure he meant forty-seven states: "One more to go, but haven't been to Hawai'i or Alaska yet."

If he does this multiple times (like McCain and his Sunni-Shiite confusion), then I'll worry.

For example, just because you misspelled "embarrass" doesn't make you a dumbass, right? It was just a mistake, right? Or am I just spinning on your behalf?

JohnnyC 2008-05-10 01:34:03 AM
Anyone consider the possibility that he meant that he's traveled to 57 states so far this primary cycle? AKA he has been to some of them more than once?

Certain gaffes don't mean much...

1) Saying 57 states instead of 47...

2) Telling the queen of England that the U.S. declared its independence in 1976 instead of 1776... (new window) --especially when you recover well.

not a big deal.

Mixing up Sunni and Shia? Repeatedly? That's a problem.

The difference is that

a) McCain has based his campaign on pretending to know a lot about foreign policy. He doesn't.

b) He repeatedly made this mistake. Not just a slip of the tongue once, but a clear misunderstanding he has repeated time and time again.

SemperLieSuckah 2008-05-10 03:24:49 AM
Somacandra: Mixing up Sunni and Shia? Repeatedly? That's a problem.

This was officially stupid a month ago. McCain once slipped and said that Iran was supporting al-Qaeda and immediately corrected himself in the video when Lieberman off camera prompted him. It was incredibly obvious that he was talking about the Shia militias even before he was corrected. The second time was even more simplistic: The Huffington Post decided to re-interpret the punctuation in a press release from his website to make it sound as though he was repeating the line.

This is ridiculous and quite frankly if you are on either side of this political race and actually believe that the politicians "gaffes" are somehow indicative of what they actually think, then you are a moron. The bare definition of the term, you are a moron.

Benazir Bhutto also said shortly before her death that Osama bin Laden is already dead because he had been killed by Omar Sheik. Anyone with a moderate IQ and a knowledge of current events knew she meant to say Omar Sheik killed Daniel Pearl but conspiracy theorists took it and ran with it and to this day continue to cite Benazir Bhutto as a source claiming Osama bin laden is dead. You now join their ranks of stupid.

Bill Frist: b) He repeatedly made this mistake. Not just a slip of the tongue once, but a clear misunderstanding he has repeated time and time again.

See post above. And no, McCain knows quite a bit about foreign policy. Trying to pretend that ANY of our serious presidential contenders don't know anything about such basic things as foreign policy is an ridiculous claim.

Why would someone who hates America trouble themselves with learning the number of states? He's just going to abolish statehood anyways and turn the US into a giant federal conglomerate. Pass out some money to the poor and voila: endless supporters, no push back on the power grab, and millions of morans supporting you.

This guy didn't know who Musharraf was during his initial campaign and had a Cabinet, during his term, who didn't think Iraq would last six months.

...And McCain has consistently supported him.

I heard an interesting thing on the radio regarding that bowling flap (stupid as it was): Obama apparently bowled only five frames. Not a full game to "earn" that 37.

It's still absurd and shouldn't matter, but it's amazing to me that even that was ignored to focus on the sensationalism of the case.

Let's not kid ourselves and pretend that partisan politics in America are shining white everywhere except the Republicans' side. McCain and Bush may or may not diverge on a lot of issues, but they'll never show it especially during a campaign unless they are competing because unity is more important than honesty if you want to win. This is part of how partisan political systems work. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid may not agree on everything, but they won't soon be seen criticizing each other over their differences. It serves no positive purpose as far as the political end is concerned.

But yeah, that's just an ad-hominem.

Actually, the last thing this country needs is another Democrat in office taking the praise for the work of true conservative economic policy. Anyone with a brain knows the economic boom under Clinton was due to Reagan's sound economic policy. The only reason we are in a mess now is because Clinton screwed that up.

The thing is, the next President is going to get the same ride because despite how bad libtards trash Bush, he has saved our economy.

Look, if it wasn't for Reagan we'd all be living in a totalitarian police state controlled with fear and brain-washing patriotism. In fact, it's because of Reagan that our economy was so great -- his policies made our economy boom in not only the 1980s but the 1990s as well.

I'm not sure that's always true though. Now, for example, may be a smart time for McCain to distance himself from Bush's catastrophic popularity ratings. He hasn't and the impression that I get is that he truly believes in the same ideals.

He's better than Bush in an overall sense, but, in the words of Bill Maher, that's akin to saying "I have a roommate now who isn't a werewolf." His concept of the international stage still appears disturbingly naive.

Bush understands that America is not falling behind in the world, but that the world is starting to catch up. When you open your eyes and realize this, you will realize that the Bush tax cuts wee the right thing to do. America has one of the highest corporate income tax rates in the world - and to stay competitive it needs to be cut. Also, it is pretty easy to see that trickle-down economics really helped us, especially in the 90s.

Not to mention Bush standing up to the bail(fail)out. Just wait and see how well off we are in a couple of years because of these policies.
