Ah, our tax dollars hard at work....sigh.....

Is it a bad sign with the headline from the Washington Post is funnier than the Fark headline?

BobtheFascist 2008-05-09 06:47:52 PM
Oh, I see. They're stonewalling. Just giving the controlling party a taste of their own brand. Yeah, it's childish but that's politics for ya. It's not like we can expect them to work for their salary.

kevinatilusa 2008-05-09 06:52:23 PM
I can understand the frustration with Republicans wasting the House's time with all this stonewalling, but why the the House wasting its time on such a bill in the first place?

What concrete effects would that bill have, other than a nice warm glow when Representatives commend each other on supporting motherhood?

itazurakko [TotalFark] 2008-05-09 07:07:16 PM
Here I thought this was going to be Republicans realizing the actual origin of Mothers' Day (yes, that apostrophe is correctly placed) and protesting it.

"We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

Why not? They're already against Mother's rights.

Hideously Gigantic Smurf: Why not? They're already against Mother's rights.

No they're not...they absolutely support a mother's right to carry a fetus to term, whether she wants to or not.

/of course, after that, you're on your own.

I'm guessing Ron Paul missed the initial vote.

While I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea of Congress doing nothing, seeing these stupid non-binding resolutions on matters that have nothing to do with the Congress getting some opposition makes me smile. Even if it was just part of some stupid procedural spat.

Saiga410 2008-05-09 08:01:43 PM
Jebus can we get a rules change so that end this kind of feel good resolution. Fark, I would vote against it and all the happy birthdays, and recognition of people's acheavements and all that stuff. Farkn waste of time. and then more time gets wasted by repubs trying to slow down congress on wasted time. ahhhhhhh.

I told you they're secret communists! Just trying to get the free market to be the biggest pile of fail ever to revive communism, all the importing from China, the borrow and spend that shifted our wealth there, but noooo, you thought I was crazy. Well who's crazy now?! Next they'll be protesting baseball and filling our apple pies with lead!

Churchill2004: While I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea of Congress doing nothing, seeing these stupid non-binding resolutions on matters that have nothing to do with the Congress getting some opposition makes me smile.

I think this one is silly, but I think it is important for congress as a whole to be able to pass non-binding resolutions. Like for example to declare something another country is doing is wrong.

How else as a nation can the legislature display how it feels about a subject. A non-binding resolution like this can show a country that congress as a whole is ready to act. A president can give a speech. But these resolutions is the only way for congress to make a statement as a whole.

If they didn't, you would have them passing worthless stupid laws instead to try to show their pleasure or displeasure with things.

snarltron 2008-05-09 08:09:21 PM
"The majority has taken, once again, their go-it-alone policy," Boehner lamented yesterday. "It's time for Democrats and Republicans to work together."

Yuh-huh, as opposed to the last 6 years when the Republicans had a Congressional majority and a President, when it was time to ram through a wildly unsuccessful and half-baked partisan agenda. It's sad because I agree with his statement on its face, but unfortunately I was alive and paying attention this decade.

It's not the business of the Congress to "make statements" on matters outside their purview. They most decidedly do not have the power to make some kind of moral judgment on the random issue-of-the-week on behalf of you and me.

Though I agree non-binding resolutions can have some legit purposes.

Corvus: If they didn't, you would have them passing worthless stupid laws instead to try to show their pleasure or displeasure with things

Hence my mixed feelings. On the whole I suppose it is better to have Congress doing nothing rather than their usual habit of making everything worse.

I'm a Republican Senator having gay sex with a Congressional Page in a Minneapolis airport restroom, so I'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies...

And if you had been paying attention the whole day, you'd see that this was done over and over again. It was a stalling tactic to protest how a bunch of bills soming up later in the week (Farm Bill, Housing Bill, Iraq Funding) had been rammed through the Rules Committee with no offers for amendments from their respective committees where the bills originated. This happened on every vote. I should know, I was there. And the delaying tactic worked. It disrupted the schedule, and is forcing the Dems to take all the crap out of their bills.

Pelosi and Co. are again playing Gotcha Politics with these bills, and the American people are the only ones who are going to pay for it.

As opposed to the fiscally sound republican policies of the 1st 6 years of Bush's time in office.

There's no point in congratulating the Republicans. They all voted in favor of the stupid non-binding resolution before they voted against it. It's Fail2.

Yes, and anyone who espouses it is an idiot.

Dear Mom,

I put on my robe and wizard hat....

All Congresses pass stupid bills like this all the time. Pancake Appreciation Day, congratulating spelling bee champions, whatever. The thing is, it usually takes 5 minutes. Now Republicans are so desperate to paint Dems as do-nothing that they jettison what little credibilty they have to pointlessly, aimlessly waste time to prevent anything from getting done.

Talk about earning your failure.

Mordac Lord of Unholy Fury 2008-05-10 07:36:13 AM
Remove all Republicans: How is this Gotcha politics? The Democrats are in charge, they can do whatever they want. They shouldn't be letting the Republicans do anything at all. Hasn't the entire history of the Republican party shown us they don't care about anything other than white male racists?

Heh. Wow. I guess your teacher just glossed over the whole Civil War when you took American History. I mean, you're usual level of troll is pretty bad, but this one takes the cake.

Oh hey, isn't this an alt? What ever happened to the other guy who was named similarly?

Frank Booth 2008-05-10 09:03:47 AM
I agree with the republican's mother's day is stupid. Im tired of being obligated to buy these stupid greeting cards and flowers! Might as well just flush the money into the toilet than reward these pointless industries.

Geniune gratitude doesn't require a set-aside day to prompt displaying it...

PumpkinCake 2008-05-10 11:48:08 AM
y'know, I'm not kidding...there was some phone poll the other day with lots of political questions, and at the end were a bunch of questions about Mother's Day. I thought it was weird until now...

ConservativesBlow 2008-05-10 08:53:30 PM
I love how absolutely evil they have been this last decade. In just a few short years the Republican party has gone from typical politicians to freakin' bad guys from Captain Planet.
