Democrats want to have a commanding majority in the Senate.

They're already losing at least one member to the White House. It would be pretty ridiculous to sacrifice another to serve in the do-nothing role of Vice President.

Well, its not like NY or IL is going to elect a Republican to replace either one of them.

I love how that site satirizes the tragic death of a young woman while simultaneously gravely scorning Ted Kennedy for causing the accident. You cannot have it both ways.

I wouldn't be so sure. If John McCain wins Ohio, the Republicans win in November. Last I checked Obama didn't fare so well in Ohio...or Pennsylvania, or California, or New York, or Florida or Michigan (I know, I know). The Democrats must winall of these states to take the white house in November.

Plus, wouldn't New York or Illinios just select another Democrat Senator if Obama or Hilary win?

Almost certainly.

Also, they'll be gaining a seat in Virginia with Democrat Mark Warner all but a shoo-in to replace Republican John Warner.

Putting people on welfare and eliminating jobs is the republican way. It's the democrats way to make sure there still is welfare when republicans off-shore their jobs.

Are you shiattin' me? Republicans may have given companies the ability to off shore jobs, but they aren't the reason it happened. Consumers are. We created this mess by demanding cheap products & services. Foreign markets were able to supply similar quality product for a far lower cost. People used to buy something w/ the expectation of it lasting for years & now they hold the attitude that they'll just buy a new one if it breaks. Don't blame the Republicans for that mess. Look in the freakin' mirror.

filth [TotalFark] 2008-05-09 04:42:17 PM
Well, the way I understand it is that you're supposed to pick a running mate who provides you with the broadest possible appeal, usually by attracting voters who aren't already interested in you. So, if Obama's coalition is Blacks and Egg-Heads (as Begala told us), shouldn't he be looking for the stupidest white Democrat in the country? And who is that, by the way? Murtha? Ooo! I know. How about an Obama/Byrd ticket?

Funny, I haven't noticed a significant decrease in the price of goods as their production gets offshored, even taking inflation into account...

Here's a free clue:
Before Ronald Reagan, the USA was a first-world nation. Meaning we imported more raw materials and exported more finished goods. By the time Ronald Reagan was finished, we were the text book definition of a third-world nation. Meaning we exported more raw materials and imported more finished goods. This was a result of eliminating tariffs and de-regulation disguised as free-trade.

When factories take advantage of exploited foreign labor, they pocket the profits. They don't pass it on to the consumer. Did Nike shoes go down in price when they went to Asia? Did Schwinn bicycles? Of course not. The end result was that good paying manufacturing jobs disappeared and low paying service industry jobs increased. As a result the middle class is shrinking and the wealthiest top 5 percent are amassing more and more.

To blame that on the consumer is absolutely ridiculous.

Chuck Wagon - So you're saying the problem is capitalism?

I suppose you could say that. Capitalism is not perfect. It's still better than the alternative though. We started moving toward white collar & tech industries too. Probably a large part of the reason there are "jobs Americans won't do" now-a-days. So the alternative is to ship those jobs overseas or import cheap labor from elsewhere.

elchip - Funny, I haven't noticed a significant decrease in the price of goods as their production gets offshored, even taking inflation into account...

A lot of my experience with this issue is in retail electronics. From what I've seen, the cost has not gone up much at all, but the profit margins have dropped. Granted, there are exceptions like speakers & accessories. There was a time when I made a pretty comfortable living pimping TV's & stereos. Margins are down, profit goes down, you work 3x as hard to make the same $$$.

I'm really tired of this "You can't win without [insert state name here]" cliche. No state is, by itself, necessary. There are hundreds of combinations to 270 electoral votes.... and all of the winning scenarios except one (winning all 50 states) involve dropping at least one state, usually several. Ohio is just another state.

And you're counting states that are never going red for McCain, like California & New York. Being edged out by Clinton in places like Cali has jack squat to do with a matchup against McCain.

And that's why everyone uses median income. Income has huge outliers at the upper end and so the average is less useful.

``If we had real leadership -- as we do with Barack Obama -- in the No. 2 spot as well, it'd be enormously helpful,' Kennedy said.

I never thought I would say this, but I agree with Bob. Where I am sure we disagree is that this is the reason I don't believe that a free market system is the answers to all of America's problems. The average American consumer does not understand that there is a difference between price and cost.
