You'd think Dubya of all people would be well familiar with the notion that people who are already unhappy with life might turn to drugs and/or alcohol to "self medicate."

Ever notice how you rarely meet people who are both stupid and depressed or unhappy? Ya I doubt he has any idea.

How many of these depressed teens have also chewed bubblegum? Well hell, there's a link between depression and bubblegum use!

"Marijuana is a more consequential substance of abuse than our culture has treated it in the last 20 years," said John Walters, director of the office. "This is not just youthful experimentation that they'll get over as we used to think in the past."

Woah, woah. He needs to chill out and just relax. And I think I have something that will help him out with that...

correlation /= causation. It's just more pandering at the front end of the political season. Frank submits his annual 'legalize it' bill and ONDCP issues it's annual reefer madness report.

The issue has nothing to do with a real study (remember the NIH political influence scandal) but is soundbite fodder for the November run-up. GOP can wave a report saying that it's the root of all evil and they are the candidate best postured to save us all and put those scary hippies in jail.

The opposition will try to discredit the report, particularly the questionable conclusions from a host of viariables. But since rational thought equates to 'talkin like a fag,' those who object to the findings will also be labelled as evil hippies.

/legalize it.

Nestea Plunge: KNOW YOUR DOPE FIEND! YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT!

You will not be able to see his eyes because of Tea-Shades, but his knuckles will be white from inner tension and his pants will be crusted with semen from constantly jacking off when he can't find a rape victim.

He will stagger and babble when questioned. He will not respect your badge. The Dope Fiend fears nothing. He will attack, for no reason, with every weapon at his command -- including yours!

BEWARE!

Any officer apprehending a suspected marijuana addict should use all necessary force immediately. One stitch in time [on him] will usually save nine on you!

It won't any more if this man is the next occupant of the White House...

While I'm not sure he'd actually be able to get decriminalization passed, I guarantee that going after pot smokers would be a very, very low priority for his administration.

AuralArgument 2008-05-09 11:15:51 AM
I started smoking pot when I had my only suicide attempt while on the "Approved" mental health drug lists.

Fark the companies i'm happier now then when i was on your shiat.
And i went from being daily smoker to now bi-weekly... you can't do that on lithum/prozak/efflexor

I love how they demonize weed, a plant which has never been found to cause any of the shiate they claim. Then when little Jimmy goes to rehab for it, start him on Ritalin, lithium, or any of the other prescription drugs that have been shown to cause suicide.

No Shiat.

They don't even try to prove the reverse.

Paedophile_Deluxe 2008-05-09 11:22:51 AM
The report also cited research that showed that teens who smoke marijuana when feeling depressed were more than twice as likely as their peers to abuse or become addicted to pot - 8 percent compared with 3 percent.

When you're talking about addiction, you have to be honest about what context you're using it in. Marijuana "addiction" is like internet addiction, not heroin addiction. Yes, you want more, but you're just going to be irritable, not shaking uncontrollably and burglarizing homes for drug money.

As far as the rest of this article goes, all it's saying is that depressed people are more likely to smoke pot. No shiat, Sherlock. This just in: bored people more like to use the internet, and hungry people are more likely to consume food!

I agree, but to someone with a lot of mental problems, anything can be chemically addictive. Dopamine is powerful stuff. I'm in the legalization crowd, I'm just sayin'.

/Gambling can be a chemical addiction for that matter

Depressed people are significantly more likely to be taking anti depressants than non depressed people! Therefore anti depressants cause depression.

Many veterans rely on cannabis to reduce anxiety and pain. Letting them medicate themselves may seem only fair, but it will cause children to wither and die!

burndtdan: why, just two puffs of a marihuana cigarette and i turned into a bat!

I wonder how many people know that was part of the actual testimony of a government "expert" on Cannabis? SO few people seem to understand that it was originally criminalized because it allegedly caused "rape, murder, and insanity"....whereas now it's illegal because it (allegedly) makes "kids" depressed and less likely to do well in school. Of course alcohol use by "kids" is much more dangerous, especially when over-dose deaths are factored into the equation. *sigh*

How many people that take anti-depressants are "depressed" and/or have "suicidal tendencies"?

The war on Cannabis users is a sick farking joke.

I would argue that the correlation between paying taxes and thoughts of suicide are plainly obvious.

FTFA: "WASHINGTON (AP) -- Depression, teens and marijuana are a dangerous mix that can lead to dependency, mental illness or suicidal thoughts, according to a White House report being released Friday."

POT?!?

How about prescription antidepressants!:

In the United States a 2005 independent report stated that 11% of women and 5% of men in the non-institutionalized population (2002) now take antidepressants[29] . . . The higher incidence of suicide ideation reported in a number of studies has drawn attention and caution in how these drugs are used. (Wiki)

I believe one of the reasons there isn't a healthy sense of outrage over what is happening to America and Americans is because of the huge numbers of people dosing themselves with this crap and being so zoned out that "No Worries" defines their mood when it shouldn't.

Give me booze and pot - I can remain pissed off, but sardonically amused at the same time.

Yeah, but they're trying to conflate it with addiction to harder drugs. It's not like cocaine, heroin, or even caffeine addiction. It's a behavioral thing above all else.
