I DO hope they listen to him. I mean, he's the Devil:

Who knows more about The Devil's Music than the Devil?

/hopes #9 is more like the first five than the latest three
//studio albums, that is.
///Garage Inc. was great, but it was two CDs' worth of covers - not a single track written by The Four Horsemen. It wasn't (technically) a studio album
////S&M - also kick-ass, but it was a live performance. Also not a studio album.
\Load = meh
\\ReLoad = meh (except Fuel)
\\\St. Anger = EPIC FAIL
\\\\has all except LSB&P

They were the shiat when I was in high school but I graduated in '89 and that was a long time ago. I smashed my copy of Load so that it would never harm anyone ever again. Haven't bothered with them since.

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2008-05-08 09:16:25 PM
The headline is misleading. Dave actually says not to release it until its done.

But hey, I'll say it...Metallica, don't release it if it sucks.

...and it WILL suck.

If only there was a Bay Area thrash band that was releasing world-class metal...oh there is...they're called Death Angel.

CheddarPants [TotalFark] 2008-05-08 09:51:45 PM
Grohl rules.

And like RagingLeonard says, so does Death Angel.

/still have my shirt from the "Frolic Through the Park" tour.

/so does Metallica (or at least what they've become)

cyberworm [TotalFark] 2008-05-08 10:18:44 PM
Well, they at least realized that the only way they'd get any of their music out there would be to give it away.

For good or bad it's a publicity stunt. I mean, when's the last time anyone heard about metallica doing anything other than testifying in front of congress?

Agree with King Something's entire breakdown, except ReLoad had songs like Slither, Carpe Diem, Fixxxer, Devil's Dance, et al. - a whole album of slow, nasty grooves like those and you have a killer album. Sounds nothing like the 80s albums, but who said they couldn't change up their style? St. Anger was so bad, imo, that I don't have much hope for this new offering, but you never know.

Also, you know what I don't understand..? The vocals on S&M are the best I've ever heard Hetfield. He's positively nasty throughout, especially on old stuff like Thingy, Creeping, Master - better than the originals... so why the HELL does his voice sound so horrible on St. Anger? I don't get how in 4 years he went from his best vocals to absolute crap. I don't get it.

Dear FOO FIGHTERS,

Hey, it's Faux Shizzle! Remember me? Yeah, I'm the guy that's been listening to your band faithfully since 1997. I bought your sophomore album The Colour and the Shape from Sam Goody, I think. Actually I can't remember. It was 1997 for Christsakes! But that album changed my life and I've been listening to your albums ever since.

I waited patiently for Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace to be released and was the first one at the shop waiting to hear it. I thought when it came out it would blow everybody's farkin' minds because it's farkin' FOO FIGHTERS! Unfortunately it consisted of one good track and tons of boring filler material.

Good luck on your next album, but don't release it if it's filled with a bunch of whiny ballads.

Yours, Faux Shizzle.

P.S. It is possible to write a sensitive song without sounding like an emo kid. Take a listen to Everlong. You'll see what I'm talking about

This deserves the irony tag. Foo Fighters albums are following some law of diminishing returns, I gave up after One by One.

I agree completely. It wasn't an indictment of their back catalog, just their last album. Those are 2 excellent songs BTW, and I could add many more to that list.

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2008-05-09 12:30:31 AM
To defend Dave Grohl...The Foo Fighters is a commercial band that gives Grohl the cash to do what he really wants. He has said so himself.

If you really question Grohl's street cred, take a look at the artists that he got to work on the Probot album.

In fact, here's a Probot vid.

3 chords repeated over and over does not make a song. They could at least change the strumming or something during the chorus.

I guarantee that their new album will suck. Metallica used to be all right but their last hurrah was at some point in the early 90's. They act like they are tough still but it's just a charade now, it's almost laughable.

Naming an album St. Anger just shows that you have nothing left in the tank.

I like Social Distortion. They are a great live band and they have a raw sound that works for me. Plus they were copied note for note and line for line by Green Day. For whatever that's worth.

JohnnyDreamboat 2008-05-09 12:41:48 AM
Is it just me, or does "Everlong" sound like an outtake from Sonic Youth's "Goo" album? Love the video, with all of the Evil Dead referances and all, but I'm just sayin'...
/Thurston Moore wants his grooves back.

Yeah, don't get me wrong; I like Live at the Roxy. I just think their song writing was way too simplistic to ever break any kind of barriers to make it mainstream. It's like a punk rock version of Big Star.

I love Social D and all, but Mike Ness is the single worst lyricist of all time. I would rather Madonna write a punk song than him. (I still love Social D)

Like I said above, I love Social D. For pure songwriting though, Billie Joe Armstrong is fantastic. American Idiot and Warning are just awesomely done.

As far as punk goes, it's all about the Dead Kennedys.

IIRC, James blew/permanently damaged his vocal chords, during a concert.

Apparently, it's bassist Nate Mendel. Still, the entire band did a concert for Alive & Well (new window) according to a Mother Jones (new window) article.

Het's been consistently good live, as for his vocals on St. Anger, they weren't polished and they didn't do many takes. What this would signal is that the vocals weren't tweaked or modified. After recording, he's apparently had a chance to tweak some things, as some of those songs are nasty at live shows.

Spoken for truth here. I loved the Pretender and thought the album would be great if the rest of it sounded like that lead single. I was saddened to hear the rest of the album.

Don't you mean, up her nose? And they made plenty of money before Cobain died.

I've always liked the Foo Fighters. Not my favorite band ever, but I thought ESP&G was one of their best albums. It's not just one type of music. That's the sign of a good band. They went several different routes on that album. They've got heavy songs, acoustic songs, piano, etc. The more and more I listened to it, the more I appreciated it's depth musically. And they do put on one hell of a show. One of the best concerts I've ever been to.
