Wow. This thread is flamboyant with 70s cheese rock.

... my greatest greatest hits album is whichever Johnny Cash one is the best.

And, although I wouldn't expect it to make any of these kinds of lists, I really like this live compilation:

"Staring at the Sea" should only be on this list if we are talking about the cassette version, which included a great deal of there b-side singles.

OK, this is retarded.

If we are doing "best of" best of, then essentially we are doing a BEST ARTIST list, since we are judging them on the cream of the crop from their entire catalog, no?

No. Many great bands/artists don't have greatest hits albums, and many that do have greatest hits albums, choose their own favorites instead of listening to the fans.

How you could leave off Thriller is beyond me. I realize there's a lot of great music out there, but to leave off such an astounding piece of art just shows that you did not put much thought into your "list."

Crowded House. Agreed. Have multiple copies of it.

Currently on heavy rotation in my car. Remastering their most popular B-sides was one of the smartest decisions they made in the past decade.

TheCharmerUnderMe:

Finally, someone on FARK that has decent taste in music.

I have been absolutely roasted and blasted in previous threads about my music taste.

Squeeze - East Side Story...brilliant from front to back.

The Boz Greatest Hits. Some of the deepest cuts ever traced into vinyl.

STV and Double Trouble. Smokin'.

Pulled your profile and found out we share a lot in common.

Was PD and GM of college radio station in late '70's, early 80's.

Worked for a daytime AM station, pulled night shift for an FM station for a few years after. Got AM drive on a great FM AOR for a few months, then got bought out and drowned by Corporate drivel shortly thereafter. Gave up the biz for a real job.

Can still slip cue vinyl. No carts, no digital. Just the real thing baby.

dereksmalls 2008-05-09 01:36:11 AM
How about a top 10 list of most-greatest hits compilations ?
Beatles would be on there, as well as CCR.

madden101 2008-05-09 02:03:57 AM
Must agree with suggestions of LZ's Early Days & Aerosmith's Greatest Hits.

I also frown upon TFA's failure to mention Rush, be it for Chronicles, Retrospective I, II, or The Spirit of Radio. Really, any one of those is pretty solidly fantastic as far as greatest hits compilations go; Chronicles, of course, is the most comprehensive, unless you take the two Retrospective albums as one.

This. The b-sides on that cassette are every bit as good as the singles.

Also for this list: The Best of James.

Definitely. The B-sides were the best part.

the Nirvana disc is pretty crappy. Sorry, "Best ofs" should be relatively comprehensive. Not just the 10 songs you hear on the radio.

It's not a comprehensive collection by any means (it leaves off Venus in Furs, All Tomorrow's Parties, hell, all of the Loaded album due to it being on a different label from the first 3 albums), but if I were to recommend a starting point for VU, you can't really argue with the tracklist (Kudos for including the 17-minute Sister Ray instead of some of the above listed tracks). Not to mention it's generally pretty cheap.

Also, Loaded is way over-rated and the Live 1969 versions of Sweet Jane and Rock'n'Roll that are included are much better versions anyway.

I liked that album better when it was called The Stone Roses.
