I saw her interview on The Today Show. If she is really going to hide behind the "well John's running for President, not me" excuse then she probably ought not open her mouth for the next 6 months.

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2008-05-08 02:10:48 PM
Well he is running for President and not her. I dunno is it really anyone's business how much she makes as long as she pays her taxes?

EatHam [TotalFark] 2008-05-08 02:13:31 PM
John McCain -- when his campaign was struggling with money -- was able to use a corporate jet (at a lower cost) owned by a private company headed by Cindy.

bfd, so can everyone who's family is above a certain level at many companies.

Well, considering McCain's trying to sneak by on some "non-elitist" point by pointing to his Senate salary and Navy pension as "my money," it might be needed. Obama far exceeds that total because of his books, it's not terribly fair when the other candidate has a shiatload of money they're pretending they don't have.

Being a married man and knowing several married men, the answer to your question is very much yes. I'm sure being married yourself, you can deduce what I'm trying to get across.

Hint: Marriage is a partnership.

Has McCain actually levelled the elitist accusation? Show me where he has said this about Obama. I thought that was coming from Hillary's camp. (And the issue was more about accusations of intellectual elitism - Ivy League intellectual snobbery - than economic elitism.)

McCain - "Obama remark elitist" (new window)

And yes, because voters really consider "intellectual elitism" and "economic elitism" separate issues and wouldn't dream to compare Obama's money and McCain's money (beer money excluded) as a point of discussion.

Gwendolyn [TotalFark] 2008-05-08 02:21:43 PM
Well I don't really care to see a presidential nominee's tax records either. As long as the IRS knows and makes them pay their taxes who cares? It's no surprise every Presidential candidate is a millionaire.

I'm sure people some believe Bush is just a Rancher from Texas. Obama is just a family man barely getting by and Hillary is living on the royalties from her book sales. But those people are so farking stupid they wouldn't watch the news reports about tax returns anyway.

But it's not Obama...it is just Obama's comments. And it isn't "elitist" per say...but intellectual elitism...and obviously Obama was wrong anyway so it makes everything ok because John McCain is in touch with small town America.

I don't really give a flying fark how much money either one has. I have no problems with a President being rich, whether he made it off of books, married it, or won big at the track.

cheshirecatsmileyface 2008-05-08 02:25:42 PM
Seeing as how part of the president's job is overseeing the economic welfare of the country....you can be damned sure I want to know the state of their personal finances.

If they can't be honest and intelligent with their own, can they be honest with the country's?

Neither do I. But some people do, and John McCain is trying to hoodwink them into thinking "I'm jus' folks" in part by pointing to his "I've got my salary from my job and my pension from my service in the military, that's it" stance. That sucks.

This is what people have been saying about Reverend Wright, with pronouns changed. Hasn't stopped them.

McCain is trying to sell Obama as the elitist, so having a wife release documents stating they - as a couple - make millions of dollars doesn't help his case. It also makes his donations paltry in comparison.

How funny would it be to have one of those degenerate race track guys as the President? He'd walk around with a miniature pencil in one hand, his green visor on, and he'd be talking to world leaders about whether they like the 2nd horse in the 4th or the 8th horse in the 3rd.

I don't think people should have to disclose this kind of info, and it sucks that it has come to be expected. That said, when someone doesn't, it looks a bit fishy.

If it were Michelle Obama or Bill Clinton that steadfastly refused to disclose this information, then the "liberal media" would be all over them. But the liberal media (hearts) McCain, so this will amount to nothing.

"We're better than them because they think they're better than us" is elitism. The liberal bashing industry is premised entirely on convincing people that they are morally superior to "snobbish" liberals.

And for the record, crossing the betters isn't like crossing the streams.

Shaggy_C 2008-05-08 04:31:16 PM
McCain, like Kerry, made himself famous because of Vietnam. People like them aren't smart, they aren't good people, and they never did anything of merit aside from fight in a war. They catapaulted from the talkshow circuit into politics and never looked back. Real 'men of the people' indeed. The Cindy Sheehans of the 1970s.
