Subby, you need smacked.

TFA: People misunderstood that phrase. I was deploring the way in which President Clinton was being treated, vis-à-vis the sex scandal that was surrounding him. I said he was being treated like a black on the street, already guilty, already a perp. I have no idea what his real instincts are, in terms of race.

I was going to say that until I realized doing so would only legitimize the link by sending it to the commented tab.

Well, yes, there is the hint that the subby was trying to imply that Toni thinks that black people are bad, but it isn't really all that far from what she said.

Holy crap! Someone misunderstood someone and then spun that misunderstanding into real facthood. Then people agreed with it and supported it with as many coincidences as possible.

Well, now that I think of it, this is how everything goes.

I've only heard Republicans use that term for President Clinton.

Of course they mean it in a bad way. He's the first President since Johnson who hasn't ignored the black vote or told them to pound sand.

The President of Hittin' That Ass 2008-05-08 02:12:06 PM
Whatever she meant, it entered into general society as one thing and stuck, especially with black people. People didn't misunderstand, they just took it how they took it and liked it.

So which did you do? Go see the movie of the worst book you had ever read, or read the book of the double-bad movie?

When you make up your troll lies maybe you should think if they make any sense first.

So I guess her point is going after a black person, even if they are guilty, is wrong.

This puts Sharpton's marches into perspective.

You used to be way better than this.

Not that I have fond feelings for Toni Morrison or anything, but usually when I tell someone to STFU, I try to give a compelling reason for it.

Writing a book that you thought was sh*tty, in a thread having to do with her characterization of Bill Clinton, isn't a compelling reason.

Uh, that's not the point. The point was he was considered guilty before he was proven guilty. Even if he was guilty, that's wrong, period.

Usually in 4th or 5th grade English we learn that you put quotes around things that people said, not things that you think they said, unless you're writing a short story with dialogue.

And I don't think that's what you're doing.

bwesb: Who gives a fark what Toni Morrison thinks?

She has her head screwed on, at least as far as this election:

Why did you endorse Barack Obama for the presidency?
I thought about voting for Hillary at the beginning. I don't care that she is a woman. I need more than that. Neither his race, his gender, her race or her gender was enough. I needed something else, and the something else was his wisdom.

I totally respect that, and would respect it equally had she voted for Clinton for that reason. Here is someone who is both female and african american, and is saying "Gender and race mean jack shiat - what matters is what the candidate actually does/says" I wish more people would say that.

Beloved was not a horrible book. Kind of depressing, and parts of it were hard to read because of deliberate misspellings in the dialogue, but really, it was quite decent. I'd much rather struggle through that than read, say, The Sound and the Fury, half of which you can't read because it's written by a retard, and the rest just sucks because Faulkner is just a horrible writer. And it's not that I'm biased against retards in books - Flowers for Algernon was written in the same way for much of it, and was excellent. Faulkner is just a douche.

DrZiffle 2008-05-08 02:41:01 PM

I am sorry but black people don't have a lock on being prejudged by the media. And for her to think of that as the defining "black" experience and limited to black people is telling.

Highly unlikely. I'd go out on a ledge and say that I probably am more educated than you are, but I don't really need to break out my e-peen0r for a competition with you.

I like faulkner. His stream of conciousness writing is a bit difficult to read but the over all stories he tries to tell are quitre interesting.

All2morrowsparTs: I like faulkner. His stream of conciousness writing is a bit difficult to read but the over all stories he tries to tell are quitre interesting.

Stream-of-consciousness writing is fine. That's what James Joyce is for. I didn't find Faulkner's story in Sound and Fury interesting at all - typical inbred southern family ends in tragedy, because they're all farked up. He doesn't make you give a crap about any of the characters - _maybe_ Caddy, since she clearly has a good heart but is all screwed up because of her parents and brothers (except Benjy) - but we never hear from her. If you want to read about farked-up southern families and actually _care_ about the characters, go read Tennessee Williams.

/I'll stop threadjacking now....

BoringNickName: Here is someone who is both female and african american, and is saying "Gender and race mean jack shiat - what matters is what the candidate actually does/says" I wish more people would say that.

Of course she would say that. This primary is a win-win for her. There isn't a lot of difference in the advertised policies of either candidate besides race and gender, so that doesn't come into play. What comes into play are some intangibles like wisdom and ability to lead. (Which by the way, are reasons I also support Obama.) That aside, she can throw her support to Obama and not be a misogynist. She can throw her support to Hillary and not be a racist. Try being a white male and choosing between the two. It doesn't matter what my reasons are, someone will peg me either as a he-man woman hater or a Klan member and the truth of the matter is I am neither.

I do find myself thinking prejudicial thoughts from time to time. It has nothing to do with color though. It has more to do with a deep-seated hatred for people who are 2nd and 3rd generation welfare recipients who will never work for any reason. Add to that list people who draw disability who are clearly not disabled. My mind is typically already made up about these people before I ever meet them. And I find I'm typically right about them. They're lazy, stupid, and ungrateful and I cannot bring to mind a synonym for hate that is strong enough to describe my feelings towards these leeches on society.

/My hometown is full of artists.
//All they do is draw checks.
