I was really hoping that Splinter would be their last album.

Is it free of DRM-style stupidity? I'm rather afraid to download music from record company websites these days.

Davescookies 2008-05-07 07:38:35 AM
They were easily my least favorite band ever until Nickelback came along. And then they were recently dethroned by Mindless Self Indulgence. It's the circle of suck.

for good or for awesome 2008-05-07 07:58:10 AM
No. I'm thinking they would have to pay me to download that.

synep 2008-05-07 08:23:13 AM
320kbps, no DRM. Of course, they want your e-mail address before you download it.

The song was kind of lame. Nothing fresh, just the same rehashed crap The Offspring have been putting out for the last 10 years. This is what happens when 40-year-old men play punk music.

/LOVED the first few Offspring albums

Neekoh 2008-05-07 08:25:23 AM
It has the suckage of Bob Rock written all over it.

monas 2008-05-07 08:35:15 AM
I remember when they announced 'Conspiracy of One' was going to be downloadable when it was released. Then their record company spanked them.

I think those were the heady days of 2001 when Record Companies first tried to stop their apocalypse.

The Glass Dragon 2008-05-07 08:35:30 AM
The later Offspring stuff isn't very strong, but Smash is a killer album and I still enjoy listening to it every now and then.

The other day Sirius Octane played Bad Habit. That song kicks ass.

Nine Inch Nails just released an entire album for free. Up to high quality .wav files no less. But I guess everybody's so used to them doing it that it doesn't rate a Fark article anymore.

You said it! It's hard for me to get into the newer stuff because the energy from albums like Smash felt sincere. When I listen to Conspiracy Of One, I like it, but it just doesn't get me pumped.

But I do think bands giving out free 320kbps songs is awesome.
Also, as much as I hate Myspace, the music pages often have a nice selection of whole songs streaming to get a taste of the artist before you buy if you can't or don't feel like downloading.

Same here. I figured my headline wasn't witty enough perhaps. All I really want is an excuse to post pictures of Reznor all juiced up on HGH.

monas 2008-05-07 10:15:13 AM
Was the headline "Reznor gives everyone the slip"?

it's good, but not as good as Year Zero or Ghosts.

No, it's not. Ghosts passes for being soundscapes and a minor release. Otherwise, it's table scraps from his noodling around with his laptop.

The Slip is most definitely table scraps thrown in a frying pan with some de stjil artwork. Trent is spending too much time on his laptop mixing and remixing from a library of stuff, rather than composing a coherent album.

Same here... although he'll make up for the cost in ticket prices for upcoming summer tour. $65 for presale tix later today. They'll be even more expensive for the public sale.

/saw NIN in Koln, Germany
//totally worth flying over there just to hear Trent say 'whoooopsy!!!' as he tripped and fell off the stage during a song.

Like everyone else I submitted a Slip headline also but Fark won't bite for anyone, I guess.

It is pretty decent. Better than Ghosts...but I am not a huge fan of instrumentals so take that for what it is worth.

My point exactly, that album sucked. Their album "The Decline" is the most appropriately titled album ever; the decline of NOFX started shortly after they released that EP

Layne Staley dies of a drug overdose. Kurt Cobain kills himself. Heck, even Shannon Hoon snuffs it early.

And yet the Offspring continue to exist, and crank out the most insanely crappy, talentless music imaginable.

How is this fair? How? How?

1994 started as a good year. Life has been downhill since.

At least the new NIN album is better than whatever crap The Offspring will ever put out.

I think this goes without saying. Though, most of their pre-"Pretty Fly for a White Guy" stuff isn't that bad. Everything since has been terrible, though.

Anyway:

I see Ghosts in the same vein as Still. It's Trent's secret album. Neither is stuff I'd throw on, but mostly stuff I'd really have to be in the mood for it.

Smash was a great album. I haven't liked anything they've done since then.

Trent's REAL secret album is Quake.

Gotta step in here:

I believe that Ixnay on the Hombre and Americana had a few pretty damn good tracks on them. Most of them were "side B" songs. Sadly Americana will be remembered for the "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" song which is easily the worst song on the whole album and yet gets the most airplay.

Raggy?

I think the key word on Travis McGee's comment was "exist."

Look it up.

I'm aware of the meaning, Snarky McSnarkerton.

And as long as I hear Creed blared over almost every generic rock radio station once an hour every hour, the fact that they are no longer a band does not aleviate the misery one iota.

this is halfway decent, Splinter was a much better than conspiracy of one or americana... This sounds similar to splinter, i'll give a listen.

I appreciate any band that does this. Even the Offspring, who have been charging people for the same album for like 15 years now. A shiatty album at that.

It's a crss between Ace of Spades, and another Motorhead song.

oh, by the way, that new Nine Inch Nails that's freely downloadable is worth less than what you pay for it to get it. Trent should pay me for the utter waste of time.

I'll agree with that, provided you agree The Decline is 17 minutes of solid WIN. The only song of theirs I have been able to get excited about since is "You're Wrong", and that's an acoustic song.

The shows are still a blast, though. 'specially when Fat Mike's in one of his "self-destruct" phases. That's when he'll play the second set wearing your girlfriend's bra and panties(true story).

I can see maybe the guitar riffs but the bassist sucks and so do the vocals, and the drumming is mediocre

Nothing like motorhead

A band put an mp3 for download on their website. Why is this news? Fat Wreck Chords generally has one or two songs from every album in their catalog available to dl on their website. Ridiculous.

Oh jeeze this song is terrible.

Fark the bozos. I'm not handing over an email addy so I can see if they still suck as bad as they ever did. They had a few decent tracks that were only good because they were mildly amusing and had videos that matched, nothing else. I said it in the 90s and I'll say it now: The Offspring are what it would've been like if my dad had started a punk band.

I got suckered into seeing them live in '97 and they were the only band I've ever seen take an intermission after about twenty minutes. Epic fail.
