Dear computerized, monopolistic, asshole-owned mainstream classic rock radio industry:
Bob Seger was pretty good when he came out, but you've played his stuff more than you've ever had a right to. NOBODY ever liked him as much as you think they did. I mean, Stranger in Town was a pretty good album, but let's get real. You can only get away with playing something to death if it's written by someone like Jimmy Page, The Beatles or Jimi Hendrix. Bob Seger is not even in their league. He'd probably admit it himself if you asked him. Please stop playing his stuff to death and start playing some deep cuts from classic rock albums instead of the same tired shiat you've been playing for the past 25 years. And would it kill you to play more Frank Zappa?

Signed,
Most of America

Been there, actually. It was smoggy, but neat.

What you said..plus I was going to thank subby for not linking to a clip of "Old Time Rock And Roll". I remember when the album came out and that was always the song everyone skipped over when they played it! Of course, we had to punch the selector on the 8-track to skip past it.

Wasn't OTR&R the song Tom Cruise sang in his underwear in "Risky Business"?

Dear Most of America,

True, a number of Bob Seger songs HAVE been ruined by heavy rotation on classic rock stations. This should in no way diminish the fact that he always put on a helluva show, and some of his songs have been overlooked and are thus still very listenable (is that a word?), most notably Katmandu, Nutbush City Limits and Roll Me Away. Besides, it's my birthday too, and I wanted an easy greenlight.

Signed,
Subby.

Hell, I could live with hearing more deep cuts of Bob Seger stuff. I've heard Main Street and Hollywood Nights more times than I care to admit, but I'll be damned if just once have I heard Ship of Fools or Brave Strangers on the radio.

Songs like this make me think of when we were kids and tooling around the neighborhood and the one creepy mullet-haired Rude Dog tank top wearing dude with the manic Great Dane would be hanging out in his driveway working on his Trans Am and blasting some Seger.

Katmandu is underplayed? Where the hell do you live?

emocomputerjock 2008-05-06 11:12:36 AM
Meh, boss was next cube over, had to make that last post quick - there's even more stuff of Seger's that would be great to hear on the radio, the stuff I listed was just on the "big" albums. Smokin' O.P.'s is some good stuff, and I've always had a soft spot for The Distance. Mongrel has some good shiat on it as well. Nonetheless, you don't get to hear it because the other stuff overpowers it in terms of radio play.

CarnySaur 2008-05-06 11:15:10 AM
And he still puts on a good show, if last year's tour was any indication.

Cincinnati, the stations here have very short playlists.

Bob Seger the mid-west's answer to Springsteen. I happen to like Bob though, my dad sat in with him one time at a gig, when it was Bob Seger and the Last Heard(how obscure is that?) so I got that going for me.

I remember my father would play Nine Tonight whenever he was cooking dinner in the kitchen. I am convinced that, along with him playing The Doors and Queen, made me the rock fan that I am today.

Thanks, pop.

TSE: Rude dog? HA! Hello 1987.

Yeah, he had about five or six different versions of the ol' Rude Dog tank. Another fun fact about that dude that I just remembered was that he had this fog machine, and every Halloween he would turn it up full blast....so you'd be trick or treating around the neighborhood, and when you got to his house you would hear this Halloween music and have to walk through a stifling cloud of fog and he would be up on the porch dressed as a zombie or something.

By the way, I wasn't intending to bash Seger. It's just that I automatically think of that guy when I hear one of his songs.

/Rock on Rude Dog man, wherever you are.

When I moved after college the clasic rock station in my new city played alot of bob seger, to be honest I thought he died, as that would be the only reason to hear him on the radio that much. He wasn't dead, the local dj's just love spending time on his jock. Now that I have an ipod I don't have to listen to the radio anymore

/no more radio
//or pesky people trying to talk to me

I think you might mean Beautiful Loser... great song.

It's been almost 30 years (gasp) since I've seen him live, but Bob Seger has a shiat-ton of good music to choose from. Thanks for the reminder, Subby, and happy birthday!

Well done. You pretty much nailed why I stopped listening to the radio years ago. How many times a day do I need to hear the same two songs by some great band (Hendrix, Zeppelin, Who, Tull, etc etc, etc) when they have so much other great music that's ignored? And yeah, why the hell don't they play some damn Zappa? Even if they're afraid of the "bad language" they could toss in some of his instrumental work or even some of the milder tunes (from Apostrophe for example).

/never been a Seger fan
//can't knock him for tricking some of you into buying his records

Play "Turn the Page" on the radio, many listen.

Play "Roll Me Away" on the radio, a few go "oh wow" and listen, a few don't recognize the song and scan away.

Play "The Famous Final Scene" and only diehard Seger fans are listening, everyone else pushes the button.

Play Zappa, three or four snarky farkers are listening.

There will always be more people that want to hear the same thing over and over again than people that want "diversity."

FM exists for the former, XM for the latter.

/wishes the early 70s albums would all get reissued

I grew up listening to Seger. I got burnt out. After laying off for the better part of two decades, I snagged a bunch of his stuff again. It's not all classic, but there's still some gems. Wish I could've seen him live back in the day, I bet it was a hell of a show. Dude's voice rocked.
