Ian McCulloch, please.

/Only person who'll admit to purchasing the "Mysterio" album.

Easily one of my most favorite bands of the 80's. Mac's voice has not held up well unfortunately.

I've heard OF Echo and the Bunnymen....but this is the first i've heard of them... just based on this one song, they seem pretty average 80's indie pop/rock fare.

Above average. The band put out five awesome post-punk albums in the 80s: Crocodiles, Heaven Up Here (the band's best), Porcupine (2nd best), Ocean Rain and an eponymous record.

I like this song, but it's not really one of my favorites. Though, I seem to be in a minority that likes the Porcupine album the most.

Lips Like Sugar may be their biggest hit, but you're most likely to have heard The Killing Moon. Not to mention much more indicative of what they sound like than Lips like Sugar.

Third Uncle....

I know your superb tastes well from your many insightful and tasteful comments here on fark music threads.

Give 'em another chance. You owe it to yourself.

Check out "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo" and "Killing Moon" on youtube.

Their music of course had the whole "too precious for our own good" type sound as other 80s brit pop bands.(Smiths,Cure etc.)
but I found them to sometimes be quite profoundly poetic.

Please try again.

That's a fair appraisal (though I'd say "well above" average) -- I'm with you on "Heaven Up Here." Really consistent, almost seamless batch of songs on that one. Will Sergeant is to my thinking one of the more interesting guitarists from that period.

Here's a good live version of The Cutter.

And if you were around in the late 80's, it's likely you know "Bring on the Dancing Horses", and their cover of "People are Strange".

Nope. Seen em twice actually and they were good both times. The second time, they attempted the Killing Moon and that's when I first realized that Mac's voice was on the way out. That said, they (Echo) haven't put out a bad record ever. And Sargent is farking awesome.

I'll have to give Heaven Up here another spin. Last I heard it, it was pretty bad. Good production, but Ian's vocals were way too over-the-top for me. A Promise and Over the Wall were the only good tracks that I recall.

A year or so ago, I stumbled across a photo spread from the Liverpool newspaper's website -- their society page, I reckon -- that was covering a party at his ex-wife's house for their daughter's birthday party (18th maybe?). All these annoying looking rich fashion victims (his ex is allegedly some sort of "fashion expert/boutique owner"), and there was Mac in his sunglasses looking very out of place. Made me sad for some reason... so much for the "King of Cool."

ah... i listened to your link of "The Killing Moon"
now that's more my kind of music/stuff....thanks... :-)
his voice kind of reminds me of Bono's at times...
or is that the other way around...lolz

maybe his voice is like a a combo of Michael Stipe and Bono....tho he [the guy's] and the Bunnymen were most likely influencers on REM and U2....
or REM and U2 were influenced by E and the B-men.
that's more like it.

I don't see the REM as much, but you're 100% on about U2. The voice, the style, it's all there if you listen for it.

They both appeared at roughly the same time, so I'm more inclined to think it was a matter of them working similar veins rather than one being that much of an influence on the other.

I mean they kinda sound like the GOOD u2.... as in "Unforgettable Fire" / "Joshua Tree" / "Achung Baby" era.

No, but I know I'll be the only one to readlily admit that I liked Reverberation.

/Still listening to it to this day.
//Oddly enough, when I found this thread, my filled 160GB iPod which has been on random for the last hour, starts playing "Proud to Fall" from "Candleland".

Replacing Mac was always a bad idea. I think I've listened to about half that record before chucking it.

And I liked Electrafixion fine, but they did a much better turn when finally reforming as the Bunnies and releasing Evergreen.

not only that, but replacing their drummer. Not a bad album, but kind of hit-or-miss songwriting.

Yea. Kinda goes to show that even though certain members of a given band may not be primary contributors to the song writing, they're still important pieces of the puzzle. After all, what was the difference between the Bunnymen and Electrafixion? Les Pattinson. That's all. They brought him back and suddenly (well, 7 years later anyway) they have a hits with Don't Let It Get You Down and I Want To Be There (When You Come). Hardly a coincidence.
