That, folks is the basic tenant of her campaign. Summed up perfectly. "I am not listening" to economists or any other expert. She is the Pander Bear. Sure, it would make a huge mess and barely save anyone any money, but FARK THEM ALL! I AM HILLARY FARKIN CLINTON AND I KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT. I am pretty sure that is what happened when she made the attempt to do the healthcare thing when Slick Willie was in office. She got a bunch of people together and told them what she was going to do, and told them if they didn't like it to fark off. Sounds a lot like the Dubya we already have...

I came in here to say this. But I don't think it's a matter of "I Know What's Right", so much as, "I don't give a crap what the long term is. I owned those votes, I'll get them back from the bastard usurper Obama any way I can, and no one is going to take them from me."

She probably needs less nappy time than McCain, but otherwise I'd tend to agree with you.

You want a gas holiday? Put gas at $.75/gallon for a week. There is your holiday.

Economist are all just a bunch of elitists anyway. What do they know about money? Clearly Hillary knows more than they do.

/Hillary how is your campaign fund doing right now?

Awesome! I always knew she would understand economics better than economists! You know, I hope she's available for consultations if I ever have cancer and need to figure out the best course of treatment.

Leaders lead.
Economists economize.
I'm a decider.
Don't listen to those so-called "experts." They don't understand history like I do. When we implement my gas tax, the oil companies are going to greet us as bargainers and throw price reductions at our feet.

WFern 2008-05-04 04:25:21 PM
I love that she referred to them as "elite."

Firstly, how is that an insult? Second, what does it take to be labeled an elitist these days? You disagree with Senator Clinton?

Neeek [TotalFark] 2008-05-04 04:29:32 PM
The funny thing is her "plan" won't work in the short-term or the long-term.

She is proposing to replace the gas tax with a windfall profits tax on the oil companies. There is no reason to think the oil companies won't just keep gas prices as they are and just collect the tax as a profit. So consumers don't get any benefit in the short-term, and a new collection method to gain the revenue must be created instead of just using the one that already exists.

In the long-term, once the gas tax holiday is over, the oil companies will raise the gas price by the amount of the tax to maintain their profits. So, this plan basically is a delayed boondoggle for the oil companies.

Of course, all that assumes she could get any of this passed, which she can't. The House won't even let it on the floor, and the President would veto the windfall profits tax anyway.

/Someone needs to photoshop Hillary's face onto a panda.

And Obama's not listening to economists about jacking up the capital gains tax. Then again, it's hard for either of them to find economists to agree that the best way to stimulate the economy is by punishing the people you want to finance it...

BuyASweetAss 2008-05-04 04:35:43 PM
All that be damned. I'm still in awe of her inability to take anything resembling a normal photo. You know, one where she neither looks like a psych ward escapee or a flesh-hungry zombie.

This is a little too close to:
"I'm not listening to what my Generals say."
or "I'm not listening to what scientists who've spent their entire lives measuring the climate say."

"I'm not going to put my lot in with economists," Clinton told George Stephanopolous on ABC's 'This Week' after he asked her to name a single economist supporting her plan. Aren't there economists on both sides of that, with varying degrees of support depending on how much and how it is raised?

Hillary isn't pandering for the votes of intelligent, thinking Americans. Obama already has their support and Hillary isn't going to change their minds.
It the unwashed and undecided masses of the ignorant that Hillary is trying to sway to her side with the promise of saving $20 on gas.

FTA
"It's a misnomer to say this is all that I'm doing," Clinton defended herself, "I have a comprehensive long-term energy plan that would go right at dependence on foreign oil."

I would love to hear the details of this "comprehensive long term energy plan". Why is she keeping it a secret?

AuntofDogface [TotalFark] 2008-05-04 04:41:00 PM
At first glance, the gas tax holiday sounds great, but...

I just filled up my tank this morning - bought 9.749 gallons (the receipt is right in front of me). I had a coupon for $.10 off/gallon. The savings is right here on the coupon - $.97. Provided I stay local and just drive back/forth to work, I use about 10 gallons of gas a week. So, with the gas tax holiday, I would save, maybe, $2/tank. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there's roughly (not checking a calendar), 12 weeks. That translates to $24.00 over a 3-month period. I'm supposed to get excited about that?

As more time passes, the more I see how much of a "C U Next Tuesday" Hillary really is.

Perhaps--but when Obama was questioned about whether he'd do it even if the result would actually reduce tax revenues, he said "I am not interested in raising revenues. I am interested in fairness."

What? What kind of inane bullshiat is that?

Doesn't take a genius to figure out. He's not interested in taxing the country more as a whole, he's more interested in shifting the burden away from the middle class.

This is the same Hillary Clinton who proposed punting the housing mess to Greenspan... because... well...

But he has a calming influence still to this day on Wall Street --don't ask me why because I never understand what he's saying-- but nevertheless people respond to that Delphic oracle approach

One of the best things Obama said today on Meet the Press was that he didn't want another gas tax holiday 20 years from now with gas being 8 to 10 dollars a gallon.

You fix the roof while the sun is shining.

If you can't grasp that concept - you deserve all the Clinton or McCain you get.

Their plans are slightly different. McCain's plan that stands no chance of passing replaces the gas tax with nothing. Just straight lost revenue that would otherwise fund highways, costing 250,000 people their jobs. Hillary's plan that won't pass either replaces the tax with a windfall profits tax that she already promised would go to alternative energy research.

You don't have a vagina. For some women, they simply vote with what is between their legs.

Hrm... I've heard some other group of people once complain about the same thing.

/raise the gas tax - you use it, you pay for it
//eliminate funding from the general federal budget - I don't care if you have five kids and only make $20K; I'm tired of subsidizing your life
///eliminate non-transpo earmarks from the highway fund - ~20% of the fund is pork. I want a kosher budget, damnit
