New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco should be " child free " areas.

One of the oft-told stories by my aunts and uncles was of their uncle who did this... only it was a car full of kids (namely, my aunts and uncles) and a bar in the backwoods of rural Tennessee, and he was inside drinking for about 6 hours.

In fairness, he did leave the oldest (my then 6 year old uncle) in charge of the other kids, so it wasn't like they were unsupervised.

It apparently took four people to pull my grandfather (his brother) off of him when he found out.

So what exactly is going to happen to the kid if the parents are not there? It's not like someone is going to snatch the baby, unless your a paranoid. The car could get hit, but the same goes if the parents are in the car.

So what's the problem?

T-Luv 2008-05-04 09:19:10 PM

Is it OK to buy gas with a kid in the car? Then you have to go in and pay for it. I think 2 minutes would be harmless.

It's_A_Farking_Secret 2008-05-04 10:08:10 PM
You asshats who think this is okay have clearly never heard of the numerous kids left inside cars which were then jacked. The theif tends to literally throw the kid out, and the kid tends to be dead.

The fact the car was running was probably a huge strike against them. Bust a window, toss a kid, you're off. (Isn't this built into GTA yet?)

mkiii 2008-05-04 10:11:03 PM
or the dumbasses who lock the keys in the car along with the baby on a hot day and when you tell them to just bust a window they get all nasty and call you stupid. and when the cops come they call the cops stupid as well when the cops say they don't pick locks or shiv doors any more because of insurance and liability reasons. i saw a woman led away in handcuffs going apeshiate when she refused to call a locksmith and hit a cop when he broke a window to get her kids out of her locked car.

I think that's car theft. Car-jacking is when your car is taken from you by force. Maybe people shouldn't drive with babies in the car if jacking is a big risk.

There's some prizewinning parenting for ya...

My son is almost 2 months old. I stopped by a convenience store yesterday to get a pack of smokes and a Dr. Pepper. Total time in the store: Less than 2 minutes. Guess what? I took him in with me as opposed to leaving him in the car for "just a moment". Sure it took longer to get him out/in the car than it did to run in and get what I wanted, but YOU DON'T LEAVE YOUNG CHILDREN UNATTENDED IN A VEHICLE.

I don't see why this is so difficult for some.

Because crap like this could happen

Regardless of whether or not the cop was right for doing what he did, I don't want to end up in jail and dealing with child welfare because some uptight arse walked by my car and called the cops.

Also, it's the principle. Two minutes or two hours, the kid comes with me. I can't really explain it any better than that, and if you had asked me 3 months ago what I thought about it, I probably would have been fine with the idea of leaving my kid in a car. Becoming a parent changes your opinion of things.

Just wondering....I'm not one to judge (I'll admit that my kid doesn't have a great chance at being the healthiest of eaters). Just felt like pouncing a bit:)

Holy freakin' hell.

Now, being from the "deep" south (my hometown is named after a cow) I thought I had seen it all. I guess I was wrong.

That is the most redneckinest thing I have ever beheld in my life. The look on the kid's face is priceless.

My son's 5 months old. If I leave something in the house and we're already at the car, and it's IMPERATIVE that we have it, I'll take the house key and clicker off of the keychain, lock the kid in the car, and get whatever. I also live on the second story. He weighs a TON in that carrier. When he was 1-2 months, I was much the same as Let's talk frankly etc.

The law in Texas is no longer than 5 minutes with the engine running and within in view of the parent. Technically the apt's not in view of me but I think he's okay with the doors locked and the alarm armed.

Because for the most part, they're completely helpless if something should go wrong.

Somebody above said, "The car could get hit, but the same goes if the parents are in the car." What's the difference? If the parents are in the car, they might be able to help the baby.

In the end, why take the risk for any reason? It's a responsible rule of thumb for any parent.

karmachameleon 2008-05-05 12:50:09 AM
Just to be fair, and to show you I'm not an uptight arsewad, that Fox news story that someone else linked in answer to your question is ridiculous. What that woman did wasn't "leaving her child unattended" - she was a few yards away with the car in sight. That's no different than leaving your child in their crib in their bedroom, so it's pathetic and ridiculous that she was arrested.

But that poster is also right - you don't want to chance some malcontent making a big scene about it.

This was my question, damn you! Yeah! Did you share your smokes with the kid? MMMmmm! Cool refreshing tobacco always makes for prizewinning parenting.
