FTA: McElroy said he wasn't sure how the crew knew the plane had hit geese. It was dark when the jet took off.

Perhaps the "Honk! Honk! *THUD*" followed by a poof of bloody feathers was a clue.

Goose? Meh, dime a dozen.

An Alaska airline's 737 had a mid-air collision with a Salmon climbing out of Juneau.

That airport is a mess. It's basically just a series of tubes and you can easily get lost in there for days.

An airport named for a sitting member of congress. What a disgrace. You know who else had an airport named for him?

Reminds me when I was driving a route truck many years ago. I was on my way to a client's location, and I could see geese standing on the highway a ways down the road. As I got closer to them, I honked the truck's horn...they honked back...I honked again...they honked...and as I got close to them, they started to fly away. Unfortunately, one of them doubled-back across the road right in front of me...and BAM! I hit one right on the windshield. It made an awful THUMP sound, but didn't crack the glass.

When I later returned that same way to get back to home base, the goose was still laying in the road. I felt bad because the other geese were at the side of the road as if they were waiting for their friend to go with them.

...And that's the story of how I got "goosed on highway 47".

It's true. I thought the same thing when I first found out they changed the name. But that's nothing compared to the fact they ran train tracks to the terminal at taxpayer expense, but then decided only people with booked cruise and tour packages could use the train.

Alaska Airlines should be stupid to announce a merger with Wien Air. I mean they folded back in 1984.

McElroy said he wasn't sure how the crew knew the plane had hit geese. It was dark when the jet took off.

I was in a 737 that struck some bird/s and experienced an engine ingestion. The the air intake and AC comes off of some point in the engine and smell of burnt feathers and flesh was overwhelming. There was no detectable sensation but that was enough. Did the full emergency landing drill with heads down and fire crew call out. We had to wait another 3-4 hours for a replacement plane.

They're in a better place now. Presumably a place without screaming, sucking jet engines.

My mom really got a kick out of your reply.

They did end up with the 737-200C combis by way of MarkAir and some of the 727s may have found their way in once upon a time. They traded in the 727s for MD80s forever ago, but just retired the last 200C within the last year or so (Boeing designed the 737-400C combi just for them, so that passengers in the bush may never know the terror of flying in a plane that isn't permeated with the smell of salmon totes at all times.)
