Glad to see nobody regards the state of the ocean's fish as a serious issue. Ninety precent of the big fish have been harvested in the past 50 years. Let's go for 100%

Nothing to see here, folks, just business as usual. Move along.

Alot of my family are king salmon fishermen in alaska so i'm really getting a kick out of this rely.

Or did I just misread that?

involuntary_emiction 2008-05-04 06:38:26 AM
Anadromous, not androgynous. Means that they are born in fresh water, live most of their lives in salt water, and return to fresh water to spawn. That's also what makes the dumb bastards so easy to catch, you know where they're headed, and they're tastiest right before they enter the river to spawn (because they have the largest amount of fat stored for the trip upstream).

They hit their peak in the 80s, wasnt the same after the Valdez, and what 15 years later exxon has still not payed off and is trying to get the supreme court to let them avoid paying the billions they owe, which this whole time has been in a trust fund earning them interest.

If I remember my history right, the first time we invaded Canada was so that we could get our hands on the fish off Nova Scotia.
But we turned back when Benedict Arnold found out Montreal is even colder than upstate New York. Maybe global warming changes the way this one plays out.

The cod thing has been going on since the Renaissance. The Basques had the market nearly cornered thanks to the Catholic friday meaty nonsense. International boundery waters were initially established due to this. If anyone here is as boorish as I, they can resd Mark Kurlansky's "Cod" and "The Basques".

FBXRD Canada from space, It's the only way to, really get a kick out of, you know who else enjoyed salmon, then called shenanigans, type of article.

Profit is the keyword here, who receives the largest portion of pie, and who earns the most. These salmon spawn turn black and die, then lay in waste in the rivers. Just another resource left to waste by mankind. Fertilizer, bio fuel, cattle feed, not worth the effort profit. Let's just send our easily earned, cash over seas in the war for crude.

I'd love me a 2" thick 16 ounce salmon steak, lightly broiled , but no, I'm forced to have NY strips, and rib eye every day because it's cheaper. (end of rant),

continue.

Scuffer, I do have a bone to pick with your lot. I asked around Sydney to find an Australian whiskey and was told there was no such animal.

"C'mon, even the Japanese and Taiwanese make whiskey. What about brandy? Y'all make great wines, you must have good brandies."

"Nope."

I don't believe it for a second. You lot are holding out on me.

Give over!

/Seriously though, why isn't there a whiskey made in Oz? Seems like there'd be enough of a market to support a distillery or two.

I seem to remember something years ago where canada imposed a self-restriction, the US federally matched it, but Alaska said basically "fark dat shiat" and did whatever they wanted. But I'm too tired to go searching for it.

I think it's something like this:

Canada and the US are twins. Our abusive mother is Britain and our deadbeat father is France. America briefly went through a punk rock rebellion phase in the 18th century - "I'm going to stay out past curfew!" "You can't tell me where to live!" "Monarchy is inherently destructive to natural liberties!" Canada, on the other hand, is the suck-up of the family.
Australia, New Zealand, India, and the other Commonwealth Nations are the kids Britain had with unknown men. Mom's a bit of a slut.

Yeah, pretty much this.

I'm vegan personally, but I'm not a dick about it ;) Not yet at least... If I can give up all that tasty meat and cheese and whatnot, shouldn't everyone else be able to give up one of the five varieties of Pacific salmon for just a few years so their numbers could rebound?

No? Well fark you than. Go on destroying our planet, overfishing, and doing your thing. You'll pay for it some day. Oh yes, yes you will. I may be vegan, but I'm not above slaughtering you bastards and enjoying some sweet, sweet cannibalism. When the food wars really come, all you nice, succulent meat eaters - and your delicious marbled flesh - you're going down first.

This isn't new. This has been going on since the Lumber debacle where the US got overruled by the WTO and promptly announced they were ignoring the judgment.

Hmm...i'm going to put my money on the non-vegan in a fight.
Harvesting animals isn't anymore 'destroying our planet' than harvesting plants.

Not Quite. America invaded because they thought they could "free" us from the yoke of "British oppression". Needless to say, the invasion was repelled, and the US got a nice national anthem from what observing what was left of their capital after we fought back.

Your getting your invasions mixed up. Arnold fought in the Revolutionary war, Washington was burnt in the war of 1812.

But we hold no grudges. In fact, the Brits set a pretty good precedent. Maybe some kind redcoats would be willing to stage a reenactment?

Really? I thought plants had to be planted, that takes alot of work. It also deforests large tracts of forest, and kills millions of small animals every year. Animals, just let them do their thing. I have yet to be famished because there was a fish shortage. I eat tuna alot, cheap, good protein.
