That's the difference between wild dogs, and domesticated dogs.

Domesticated dogs prefer canned toddler, or maybe some Kiddies and BitsTM.

This is why we need to arm our children at an early age. Shoot a coyote and another eats your baby when you aren't looking, teach your baby to shoot and he never has to worry about coyotes again.

The real question is: Why the hell are a child and a nanny in the Coyote's sandbox anyways? Everyone knows they're terrible at sharing.

Meh. Not that I really give a damn, but I would be more impressed by the danger of dingoes if there was more than the example of one, in a protected park area, habituated to and scavenging off humans but generally treated like a wild animal.

Why were no Aborigine children evidently eaten by them? Could it be that treating and managing the dogs that chose to live in their villages like dogs actually worked?

No, few captive coyotes really get tame. However, you could reasonably compare the coyote bite statistics to those from the larger domesticated dog population. Canine in a US neighborhood means a possible attack on a child, wild or tame (random human in the neighborhood bears watching too). I'm not sure that applies to a single, or at least few, dingo incidents either.

ArgusRun 2008-05-04 07:01:47 AM
TheWhoppah: Coyote are too small to carry a human child.

This is what I was thinking. Coyotes are smaller than wolves. An average 2 year old is 32 pounds. A coyote is between 7-46 pounds. Unless the kid was a dwarf, and the coyote was a super, genetically modified coyote, there is no way it was "carrying" the kid.

/African coyote maybe.

Actually they are both dogs. Members of the genus "Canis". It is Foxes that are different.

Dogs are Canines, both teh Dingo Canis Dingo and the Coyote Canis Latrans are dogs.

Foxes are Vulpines.

Still don't know which I'd rather pull a newborn from the jaws of. Sometimes smaller can be badder. Especially in the Outback.

"Nothing a twenty cent .223 round couldn't fix."

While true, getting the shot is the question. Coyotes are VERY wary, will eat practically anything, and with no predators and lack of hunting, are on the rise in most places. If you have kids that play outside, you need a large, protective dog. If you want to prevent depredation of coyotes, get yourself a nice electronic call.

Do you mean depredation BY coyotes, or is it "of" coyotes? The call would be to lure them in.. or away?

HANDLOAD... I shoot 30 06 for about 15 cents a pop. And any decent handloader (not real good, just decent) will be more accurate for your rifle, once you find the right load.

It' a simple question of weight ratios. An African coyote, maybe, but not a European coyote.

LincolnLogolas 2008-05-04 09:59:49 AM
California Coyotes are pretty darn small, I'm trying to imagine such a "vicious animal" trying to carry off a two-year old. I call shenanigans. Nanny's probably got a dog that attacked the kid, and didn't want to get in trouble. "IT WAS A VICIOUS EVIL COYOTE!"

Loved the picture of the coyote that Fox put up to induce fear, however. FEAR THE COYOTES! THEY ARE AL QAIDA COYOTES! THEY WANT TO EAT YOUR CHILDREN AND POOP ON AMERICA!

akimity 2008-05-04 10:07:26 AM
If anything it probably bit and let go. Since the nanny didn't want to get in trouble she made up a story that she ripped the baby out of the jaws of the coyote to become the savior.

Sir Galahad: Get stuffed!

Dogs are Canines, both teh Dingo Canis Dingo and the Coyote Canis Latrans are dogs.

Canis lupus is wolf. So wolves are dogs too? Better check your math.

Dingos and domesticated dogs are all members of Canis lupus. It means the wolf and the dingo are both common ancestors of the domestic dog.

Maybe you shouldn't be building your home up in the hills if you're afraid of the wildlife, douche.

Had a lady tell me that the coyotes in Agoura Hills (which is.. get this, in the hills) should all be exterminated because they're a danger to her small dogs.

I have news for you, lady, and anyone who thinks like you: I'd much rather see this area returned back to its original state than give a damn about your precious dog being eaten by a coyote that is being driven to extinction.

Same with your baby. Maybe if coyotes eat more babies, we won't have this tragic urban sprawl in the next generation.
