George Bush's henchman cavity searched me at Guantanamo, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

I'd go, but only because I'd like to see for myself how profoundly they manage to dissociate the prison's meaning from the resort experience.

Plus that "Kisses from Gitmo" mug is pretty snazzy. I can see myself drinking coffee while wearing my cute "The Killing Fields is For Lovers" tshirt.

"Pretending that Guantanamo Bay is essentially a resort in the Caribbean is grossly offensive and the idea of relaxing in the sun while close by many individuals are robbed of their rights, tortured and abused is both repugnant and ridiculous."

That's the kind of story the Daily Mail loves, whether or not it's true. The Daily Mail is the Enquirer of Britain.

So... Guantanamo Bay is just like any other large military base?

Just yards from the shelves of specially branded mugs and cuddly toys, nearly 300 "enemy combatants" lie sweltering in a waking nightmare.

Two years after the Democrats took over Congress and still our boys are waiting for the flotilla of comfy chairs and nice snacky-cakes. Shame, shame, shame.

Gotta love that argument. "We didn't fark 'em, but when you don't unfark 'em, then we'll basically have to admit we DID fark 'em to point out you didn't unfark 'em, so fark you!"

I don't know why I am surprised anymore. I don't know why I still expect a level of decency from my own people. Or, at the very least, the humanity not to gloat in the face of your defeated enemy. I don't know why I feel wounded when I see fellow Americans so completely devoid of compassion for another human being. I have felt this way for so many years now that you think I would just grow a thicker skin.

But I don't. I can't help but still believe that this is just some of us, and by some accident of history and politics, only seems like more. It is a small comfort, but it is enough. I just cannot believe that we won't get beyond this base, insipid cruelty someday,

You will. But like all countries with base, insipid cruelty in a position of power, it will be beaten out of you violently by the rest of the world when your nation finally takes it a step to far.

That, I think, is the really sad part.

I like people like you. I can't help it; there is just a certain charm in a person that can be supportive of the people who farked a situation up so badly that it could take a decade to fully untangle, and then mock the other side for not cleaning up your mess fast enough. It just takes a really special kind of asshole to pull that off.

Congress has the power to shut down Guantanamo. In case you're farking brain-dead, that's the point I was making. Too bad Congress has the Big D label these days and Big D brand has to take the flak. A very inconvenient truth, I know.
