Or, the more likely reason: when people have the ability to control their fertility, instead of being subjugated by it, many will decide that parenting isn't for them. Or, if they do decide to become parents, one or two children is enough for them.

Pets aren't children. Pets do tend to make people happy though. It's only natural to want to make your pets happy in return for them making you happy.

A quick google tells me there are between 68-78 million dogs in the US, and even more cats than dogs. That's 150 million pets, on the conservative side. And not even counting the variety of rodents, fish, amphibians and reptiles people own, along with animals usually thought of as livestock (horses, potbelly pigs, goats, etc.)

In case my point isn't obvious, the US has probably more than double the number of dogs and cats than children.

Japan has a history of a hardcore work ethic perhaps this is now biting them in the ass, too many hours in a working in a cubicle ~ not enough horizontal with your better half. I cant imagine their graying out demographic is helping either.

I'd be more surprised if things were the other way around. Pus, it's not like they are in desperate need of more people in Japan... (although a balanced distribution of young, adult and elderly is always welcome)

You're joking. More people in Japan retire than join the work force each year, with less people being born as well.

They're farked if something doesn't change.

I'm sure immigration could solve the work force issue. There are plenty of people around.

Preserving the culture is another story.

It's a race between technology and a shrinking workforce. If Japan can eliminate the need for enough jobs fast enough to keep up with the shrinking workforce then they are set. Otherwise they are up shiat creek without a paddle. There is nothing young people can do that robots can't do (or shouldn't be able to do). We should all outlaw humans under the age of 20 since they are now obselete.

There are other ways around it, there's plenty of young people elsewhere who could be potential immigrants as mentioned. The remark about balance was there for a reason, though.

You've never been to Japan before, have you? The Japanese, in general, are not very fond of outsiders. They tolerate visitors, but that's only because they know that eventually, you're going home.

I doubt that a bunch of xenophobic Japanese pensioners will want their puckered up old bungholes wiped by the hands of a Korean or Cambodian immigrant. They kind of have this issue with other Asian races.

Yeah, that was awfully logical. All of a sudden the Japs have control over their fertility? Please. They have had condoms forever. And Bukkake for even longer.

You are stoned. Japan has a huge tech base with very few workers. Eliminate jobs? I doubt it. It is not a capital base like China.

That's why Japan leads the world in robot technology. So they don't have to deal with the third world problems that third world migrant manual laborers bring. Plus they want to get their cyborg freak on that they've been dreamed up in anime.

Mostly because you can make your population grow by either breeding madly or importing people, those are the two main options. Or making robots, apparently that's a new option out there... I think that I'll vote for the robots.

Japan is tiny. They are already stretched in the person per mile area. There is no possible way immigration becomes an issue there. Think about it.

A large and aging population. A sexually independent breeding populace that remains reliant on an unadapted tradition of marriage and family. The remnant desire to be loved and needed to go along with increased education and affluence.

This is one of the possible results.

You have to decide what you want: either Japan has too many people or 18 lost souls as a total population. Unless Japan is already a nation of robots and nobody warned me about it, robots don't count as citizens in most countries.

Japan DOES have too many people. They have very little land. They are building 50 story residentials because of it. They need robots to manufacture because they don't have a whole lot of people.

Confused much? Taking lessons from Dan Quayle, maybe?

To save you the trouble of actually learning on your own: Japan has lots of unused land. They pursue a policy of cramming everyone into a small portion of their islands, which are almost as large as California in total. That's a lot of land. And 127 million is a lot of people. About four times as many as California, which also has lots of empty land, especially if you include all the desert.

No, dipshiat, they have too many people for the tiny area of land they have. They don't have enough people to be a freaking manufacturing giant. Is it THAT hard to understand?
