Not so much "irony" as it is "amazing magical coincidence that is sort of wonderful yet eerie".

The word is "irony".
Don't you think there's something weird going on here? We spent all day selecting fabric swatches, and then our guest speaker was Phil from marketing.

Something smells fishy. They lost 3 children less than a year ago, and they can still smile like this?

I demand a DNA test on the newborns.

She could have already been pregnant at the time of the accident. But yeah, I thought that seemed a little weird.

E Arkhe 2008-05-03 11:34:48 PM
I think it's super weird that they lost one boy and two girls, and then give birth to one boy and two girls. It would have been amazingly creepy if they'd named the new kids the same as the old kids.

Looks like a "cardboard" smile for the photographer to me. I just don't get a "vibe" of happiness from those smiles. If a coworker of mine is of any comparison, losing 3 kids, having 3 more just like that isn't really going to make you happy. But hey, works for them I guess. They could have gone into a drunken rage and plowed down 15 people at a bus stop.

at least they didn't name them the same names but dang that woulda been a fun joke to play for family reunions

izi ifil 2008-05-03 11:50:09 PM
This would not be ironic except in the grim circumstance that they engineered the deaths of their three kids, and then *pop* *pop* *pop* AAAAAGH! They're back and we just can't get rid of them, even after our ingenious triple murder plot!!

So not so much ironic as it is a blessed miracle

Unfortunately, the whole story is probably complete BS propaganda snuck in by the Ministry of Peace to tell parents, "Hey! Even if your kids die, say like, in a heroic war effort, not only can you make another one -- but you can get the same one back! Have a nice day, and don't stop humping."

You guys obviously do not have chidren. Imagine your home filled with the laughter and joy of three little kids running around in it, and one day all that laughter and joy and silliness is gone. Poof. You watched all three of your children slaughtered by a careless truck driver.

You'd want to fill your house up again with what you had before, even though you can't really replace it.

I live 10 miles from where this accident occurred, and so anyone mocking this terrible tragedy just needs to STFU. I know this is fark and all, but JFHC, tooth fairy almighty, have some compassion. These two people loved having a big family, and it was stolen from them by carelessness (and a poor freeway offramp... building thousands of homes off this particular exit but making no additions to infrastructure...cars back up on this off ramp all the way to the freeway. The freeway can be moving at 80 but the right lane is stopped).

If this had happened to me, I'd have done the exact same thing. The world needs more children like these wonderful people had, they were kind, polite, and well behaved. Not like the crotch rot of most people.

Greta_VanHouten 2008-05-03 11:53:18 PM
phadedout: i bet she starts believing that her new trips are reincarnations of her old children. mothers are insane like that.

That's probably why she was so quick to get pregnant after their deaths. I remember seeing a story about a divorced woman who lost her 2 little boys in the Oklahoma City bombing. She and her ex got back together to make more babies. I think they did have 2 more sons, but they weren't exactly clones of their deceased brothers.

nonannystate 2008-05-03 11:53:58 PM
Oh, and yes, I was on the freeway the day this happened, and I saw the sobbing firefighters and policemen on the scene. It was horrific.

The accident happened not far from where I live. Their car looked like it had no more back seat. Now I drive like a geezer down that stretch, hoping some semi doesn't have its way with me.

Oh, and...

kenstein64.files.wordpress.com
Irony deals with opposites; it has nothing to do with coincidence. If two baseball palyers from the same hometown, on different teams, receive the same uniform number, it is not ironic. It is a coincidence. If Barry Bonds attains lifetime statistics identical to his father's it will not be ironic. It will be a coincidence. Irony is "a state of affairs that is the reverse of what was to be expected; a result opposite to and in mockery of the appropriate result." For instance:

* If a diabetic, on his way to buy insulin, is killed by a runaway truck, he is the victim of an accident. If the truck was delivering sugar, he is the victim of an oddly poetic coincidence. But if the truck was delivering insulin, ah! Then he is the victim of an irony.

* If a Kurd, after surviving bloody battle with Saddam Hussein's army and a long, difficult escape through the mountains, is crushed and killed by a parachute drop of humanitarian aid, that, my friend, is irony writ large.

* Darryl Stingley, the pro football player, was paralyzed after a brutal hit by Jack Tatum. Now Darryl Stingley's son plays football, and if the son should become paralyzed while playing, it will not be ironic. It will be coincidental. If Darryl Stingley's son paralyzes someone else, that will be closer to ironic. If he paralyzes Jack Tatum's son that will be precisely ironic.

Yes, it would be impossible for the someone in the family to submit an old photo (or 24) to the news for use in their publications.

Actually, TFA states that these kids were born at 32 weeks, and born almost a year to the day after their siblings were killed. That's a window of 20 weeks, or 5 months, between the accident and her getting knocked up.

Not that it really means anything either way.

DAMN! I almost put "and believe me I'm not getting a kick out of these replies" but forgot. So yeah, I lost. But only because my heart really broke over this accident and I don't want anyone to mock the Cobles, ever. Nobody deserves the heartbroken torture they've had to endure. Well, not true, I can think of a few...but NOT the Cobles.

It was horrible, wasn't it? Seeing the Angel on the Oso Pkwy exit made me cry every time.
