While the dumbass tag is entirely apt in this case, headlines like this make me wish Fark had a 'Wait...what?' tag. I read it three times, sure it could not possibly mean what I thought it meant.

And yet it did. Wow. I think I'm going to go have a beer now and pretend I didn't see this. Because otherwise that whole faith in humanity thing of mine might be doomed.

hip-hop world's celebration of savage violence, educational failure and misogyny by gangsta rap has been one of the worst influences on American youth, especially black youth, in decades.

It's not like Akon was some regular guy applying for a job at Circuit City. He's a rapper. Of course he has to fake a criminal background or he won't be taken seriously. It's all part of the image.

"The world of thug culture has its own perverse equivalent, in which middle-class men with minor legal transgressions exaggerate their bad behavior, claiming to be hard-core degenerates in order to impress youngsters looking for outlaw role models. In this destructive environment, the more violent and predatory you are, the more heroic you seem."

My rap/hip hop collection includes:

Office Space OST (it's mostly rap)
NWA
Will Smith
Dr. Dre
Kanye West (my favorite anime-loving, French-house music listening college dropout)
Busdriver (what rap-snobs listen to)
Necro (simply for the lyrics)

You have things like this...and I agree with you. Then...the other day, I was walking down the street, and the $10 signed check I had in my back pocket fell out. Someone walking behind me grabbed it, ran to catch up with me, and gave it back.

I think the idea of the highly esteemed/respected criminal is not endogenous to gangsta rap culture; it is something that is more or less inseparable from the American experience.

This stuff with Akon reminds me of some tall tales in high school the kids who would get picked on would tell about being fresh out of juvi.

While I agree with those thoughts, I knew what the reason was for the headline before I even clicked the link.

African americans can complain all they want about their situation in society, and there is obviously some truth to the "man" keeping them down in the past, but, this whole gangsta persona thing is doing much more towards that than anything the "man" is doing to them directly now.

Yeah, the thug persona works for a few successful rappers. For every one of those though theres thousands that are trying to duplicate it or replicate it in their lives, and, when you can't convert that into a big entertainment career, you are deep in the hole.

While her arguments do have merit, it's sort of a chicken-and-egg kind of deal. Is the glorification of the thug life causing the problems in the black community, or do the problems in the black community lead to the glorification of the thug life? There's really no way to tell.

Is that why? I want to a rather sedate Catholic school, and I was always surprised at how batshiat pathological lying crazy my public school friends were. They made up stories about outrunning cop cars, hooking up with rock stars/porn stars, directing films...inventing entire people...etc. I always wondered about that. Guess it's a public school thing. My school just taught me to hate myself and walk on dotted lines.

It's not 1955 anymore. Dress shirts and neckties don't sell records. Weezer was a fluke.
