American statehood is a lot like the mafia... once you're in, no matter how much you want to, you never leave.

/Or was that the Hotel California?

Well 'Bye'.

There has long been talk of Hawai'i sovereignty on groups like alt.native.

Not knowing much about the current status (I last poked around alt.native years ago) I suppose my main question is, how much support does this one group have even among the sovereignty supporters? Are they actually representative, or are they merely one group out of a bunch of competing ones?

Years ago a lot of the discussion was about getting certain perks of recognition as a Native American group (I think that's the right term) similar to other indian nations.

Hmm. Maybe I'll go check out alt.native now and see if there's talk...

itazurakko [TotalFark] 2008-05-03 04:54:37 PM
...and okay, now having read TFA, it seems that once again it's just people trying to get the same thing that the various Indian nations have, not some crazy brand new never heard of it thing.

I guess the big scary difference is that since Hawaii is islands, they COULD actually secede and try to make a go of it, unlike say the Navajo Nation (being entirely surrounded by the US).

The Kam schools fight has been going on just about forever.

itazurakko [TotalFark] 2008-05-03 05:21:55 PM
... or at least, that's the Akaka bill. These guys want more than the bill. And, they are just one of many groups.

Hawaii is America's Tibet. Well, without the whole totalitarian thing.

8 months too many.

Good luck defending yourself against Korea, not mention that a navy that rows pontoon boats, while wearing Puka shells and grass skirts as their only form of body armor, singing about "New Kellog's Puffa Puffa Rice", is not very intimidating.

Even "Magnum" himself, would decide it's a pretty good time to move to North Dakota.

It will never happen.

remus 2008-05-03 06:13:25 PM
Hmm. Last time that was tried, it didn't work out so well...

Good luck with that.

Groups of locals living under tarps, drinking gin, watching Wheel of Fortune, and flying the Hawaiian flag upside down does not a revolution make.

Is this a real movement like Free Quebec, or like the good ol' boys down south who are still fighting for the confederacy?

Can you really blame them for wanting to leave the United States behind in a cloud of dust? Our leader is a moron with an Oedipus Complex who's destroying the world.

"Master Thief" nailed it on the first trip to the plate, however our own laws permit secession.

Rhode Island, Virginia and New York have clauses in their treaties allowing them to secede; Article 2 Section 7 of the Treaty of Guadeloupe-Hidalgo allows Texas to secede by 2/3 majority vote of the State Legislature.

Men come together and form countries, and men also disband them when they no longer serve a purpose. Just look at any map today and compare it with one a hundred years old, and you see what I mean.

But usually they don't go away very quietly, and that's okay too.

This is bullshiat. Do those assholes realize how many American lives would have been wasted during WW2 if we gave up Hawaii now? No fark that, that's treason.

The EU is, in a way, comprised of states that ues to be nations.

Why not make up nations out of what used to be states?

So far, the enormity of the US has only made it easier to steal a lot more money from the same source.

On Jan. 17, 1893, at dusk, Queen Lili`uokalani yielded her throne under protest, with these words:

"I, Lili`uokalani, by the grace of God and under the constitution of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Queen, do hereby solemnly protest against any and all acts done against myself and the constitutional government of the Hawaiian Kingdom by certain persons claiming to have established a Provisional Government of and for this Kingdom.
"That I yield to the superior force of the United States of America, whose Minister Plenipotentiary, His Excellency John L. Stevens, has caused United States troops to be landed at Honolulu and declared that he would support the said Provisional Government.

"Now, to avoid any collision of armed forces and perhaps loss of life, I do, under this protest, and impelled by said forces, yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon the facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representative and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the constitutional sovereign of the Hawaiian Islands."

Note that the queen surrendered Hawaii's sovereignty not to the revolutionaries but to the "superior force of the United States of America". This firmly put the United States in the legal position of having invaded and overthrown the government of a foreign nation without provocation

The more you know...

That's the point I brought up in the thread about this story first breaking. How much more right do the Hawaiians have to their land than the natives of rest of the country? The mainlanders sure as hell aren't going to get (most) of their land back, what makes their claim any different?

It's a real small minority. There are seperatists all over the world who want their own independent state, without considering the consequences.

I think the federal government should spell you, to Hawaii, what will happen if the secede from the union. They will loose federal funding, tourism (which is the biggest industry in Hawaii), and protection from any country that wants to invade. If the native Hawaiians live in poverty, that should be addressed so it can be fixed. However, as history has shown, the native peoples of a land live in poverty and despair, because they have chosen to accept the victim mentality.

Hawaii has little natural resources, how the hell do they plan to live a modern life like they do now without being part of some other country?

They are a key strategic military point though. Good luck defending yourself as a sovereign nation.

There are a good amount of disgruntled Hawaiians though. If you're not native and you go into the wrong part of town you will get your ass beat.
