He's playing in Asheville, NC (about 5 hours away from me) on August 2. Hope to see him -- from the clips I've seen, he's amazing live.

/how do you dust OF a hat?

Marla Singer's Laundry: Gotta see that man.

Yeah, me too. Last tour came nowhere near here, so I couldn't swing it. This time, no way I miss it, by hook or by crook. And who would have thought Tom Waits would be out of bed, let alone having a press conference at 9AM EST?

It was a lot smaller pic when I grabbed it. She's wearing a pastie too. I'm sure of it, yeah, that's it, a pastie.

I don't know if the phrase "bucket list" existed before the movie, but can we consider it off limits now?

Oh man, I just want one chance to see him live

Does anybody know what a live show of his is like? Does he usually play with a band? Does he do mostly his piano stuff? His weird stuff? His folky stuff?

It's the album cover to Small Change (excellent album). No boss could possibly fire an employee for having good taste in music.

Hmmm. It's NOT unfetchable...but apparently it wants to be cut and pastable:

Usually, from what I've seen on video, Tom on piano (which has sometimes been drinking) and Mark Ribot on guitar, a horn player and a drummer. Big Time and Burma Shave are the ones I've seen.
Now, I hope to get at couple of live shows in. Anyone have any cities in the US besides Asheville?

I saw him last year...front row in Chicago. He has a full band, plays mostly his newer stuff. His son is on drums. He will have a seat at the piano for three or four songs. Oh, and he is fantastic!

'Tom Waits' live

if you want a good idea of how he is live, hit up the hungercity tracker if it's up, they tend to have some live dvds you can grab, the Austin City Limits from the late '70s is where its at, and also the VH1 storytellers

Saw him live in Kentucky on his last tour, he had a whole band with him. I'm not even the biggest Waits fan, but that was easily one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. He came out bathed in red light and gave a grin to make the devil jealous right as the band kicked off with "Make It Rain." Due to the various pills I'd taken beforehand, I actually became convinced that he was possessed by some kind of demon when he was singing "Lie To Me."

Any and/or all of those options are good options. No worries. It's Tom. It'll be fine no matter which way he goes.

I'd gladly watch a whole set of him banging on a piece of metal with a hammer while doing spoken word a la' Walking Spanish.

Better watch closely for when tickets go on sale -- last time he played here a couple years ago, they sold out incredibly fast.

I saw him in Austin at the Paramount Theatre (2002). Pretty damned great show.

that was the greatest press conference video i've ever seen. i had to watch it multiple times, and i'm a better person for it.

It's not a press conference to announce that he's putting a price on Scarlet's head for ruining his songs, is it?

If this guy rocked any harder, he'd be a Pharisee.
