Golf clap, subby. Nicely done.

But they've done it out of necessity, not because they all decided to cut their consumption out of the blue.

Yeah, I forgot turning off HTML to make the Struthers joke would impact the quoting. Oh well.

A little way around that:

For the < symbol, type & followed by lt (less than) and end it with ;

For the > symbol, it's the same thing, but with gt (greater than)

Like this, but without the spaces:

& l t ; = <
& g t ; = >

Heard a piece about this on NPR last night.

Yeah, they did it out of necessity, but the big surprise is that this huge of a cut is preemptive. No Juneauian has yet to see a higher electric bill - they hit mailboxes next month at the earliest.

Awesome headline. How often is one able to make that joke in usual life?

Paul Giamatti clap.

The answer to the question appears to be: quintupling the price of power. Raising the cost of a commodity leads to reduced consumption! Call the Nobel committee.

studebaker hoch 2008-05-03 04:49:30 PM
They got their power lines chopped by an avalanche, forcing the city to switch to diesel backup power, at 5x the cost.

I'd be cutting back too.

PsychoPhil 2008-05-03 04:50:09 PM
People are taking showers in the dark, stores are turning off most of their lighting, heck, even the airport is turning off runway lighting most of the time.

They're not doing this to 'go green', they're doing it because their only source of non oil electricity is out of service.

And people will STILL be paying higher (much higher) electric bills.

We're talking 50 cents a kWh here.

In any case, what they're doing is out of desperation, and is hardly a model for conservation - they've basically all put their lives on hold until things get fixed.

From the article: "...it took four more years for the populace to rise back up to pre-200 levels of power usage". Pre-200 A.D. or pre-200 B.C.? And in Brazil, does it really matter? Half of the population of the Earth is living at pre-200 levels. Drat, my microwave was still plugged in from yesterday's dinner. There goes my fuel economy measures for the last three days.

December 7, 1941 - August 14, 1945: FDR to the American people - be patriotic and help conserve energy and other vital resources so we may prevail in this war against tyranny.

Sept 11, 2001 - present: GWB to the American people - be patriotic and go shopping, don't stop using as much energy as you always have and consume mass quantities so we may prevail in this war against terror.

How the hell we got from there to here, I have no farking idea.

i have several friends who live in juneau, AK so i'm really getting a kick out of some of these replies. went up there last summer, was stoned and drunk the whole week, hiked into a glacier cave, fished for salmon and partied in every bar (not that there are very many bars in downtown juneau but whatevs)

great place, awesome people. only reason not to live there fulltime is that it's a tiny island that you can only get to/from my boat or plane. you can literally drive from one end of the main road to the other, it just stops at the edge of the island lol

dnrtfa so i'm not sure if that second paragraph was covered already

Hmm, I was going to climate-change-denier-troll the sweet ass off this thread, but this story is actually a pretty interesting example of incentives. Which is to say, people generally won't act even in their own best interest unless there are clear-cut advantages RIGHT NOW to doing so.

Maybe power does need to cost 2x as much as it does. Maybe we need to incorporate more externalities into the cost. Would that allow the use of "greener" or more sustainable sources? You can already buy green power here in Ontario, but with most of the grid still kicking it old-school, it's largely a token gesture.

Because apparently "so your children will have a better life" isn't much of a kick in the pants for most people.

quote from the article: "and Juneau may be proving that Americans are prepared to accept it."

HA HAH HAHAHAHAHAHAH

accept?

i seriously think not. ONLY when it comes at a PRICE will they be willing to accept it - and even then, only for a limited time, and at the risk of not being able to afford ANYTHING else. Besides the fact that people who live in more remote areas like Juneau are already the types to can deal with - or even enjoy - living with reduced amenities, (what, no big-ass shopping malls?) it's NOT LIKE THEY REALLY HAVE A CHOICE IN THE MATTER.

Now if, say...Los Angeles was able to pull this off, i would be incredibly impressed.

You think people there wouldn't do without other luxuries if it meant being able to run their air conditioning sometimes?

The last killer app was distributable electricity.

Everything else just uses it.

Oh, you mean the government. Hell no. I trust the oil companies more than I trust the government.

Eat a bowl of 'em, "comrade". The reason power is so cheap is that pollution and environmental damage have traditionally been seen as "free". Lo and behold, they are in fact not. Ignoring environmental externalities is a favorite tactic of capitalists, since it boosts profits, while leaving the poor, workers, and the government to deal with the mess. Stick that in your free-market-worshiping pipe and smoke it.
