The English aren't drinking like they used to

They are now pouring the beer in their ears.

In a related story, English women have suddenly become less attractive, condom sales have plummetted, and internet porn viewership in the UK has increased exponentially.

We may not be starting as early but we certainly know how to put them away once we've started.

are the good folks of scotland still drunks? then western civilization will be fine.

Fewer and fewer people can afford to drink.

brantgoose 2008-05-03 01:38:24 PM
They're blaming the Americans of course. Also the fault of America: political correctness, obesity, dieting, global warming, multi-tasking, bad English, whatever it is that passes for an American accent among the kids nowadays, hoodies, bad music, Chavs, and anything now completely Nineties, such as Eminem.

I_Can't_Believe_It's_Not_Smegma 2008-05-03 01:44:10 PM
Now that they are sobering up are dentists making a comeback?

brantgoose 2008-05-03 01:45:00 PM
To tell the truth, they're just catching up on trends that started elsewhere. In my experience it takes about five-ten years for anything to make it through the culture mill and then cross the Atlantic either way. If it takes a detour through Canada something British or American, possibly even French, can make the trip in three years because the marketeers will know that much sooner it will sell. It's a short jump from test markets in Canada to the mass market.

Man-up Nancy...the French are beating you!

I_AM_M 2008-05-03 02:14:23 PM
As always, I blame the GOP in America for this.

Yea! More for the rest of us! Now if only the Chinese would do the same with oil...

no problem, the germans are here taking up the slack with a vengeance.

Technically there should be a colon between the headline's two sentences, otherwise they have no causal relationship with each other.

/punctuation nazi in a bad mood, sorry.

Subby gets a +1, headline made me think of Frank Zappa's song about "Flakes".
"and civiliization will grind to a standstill"

If beer o'clock keeps getting later, so do hot-babe thirty and a quarter past puke.

rka 2008-05-03 02:37:06 PM
At work, Beer-Thirty usually means 3:30-4:00pm meet time.

We just call it an "Offsite" staff meeting.

Or we just bring a case or two into the break area and start at 2:30pm.

Are they gay?

Gobobo 2008-05-03 03:00:47 PM
24hr drinking replaced the 11pm 'Time at the bar' cry by landlords throughout the land, which means you can drink and feck until you puke. Starting later means you've actually got something in your belly to puke.

/But that was a close call, Western Civilization.

It's their own fault for not switching to a cottage economy in the late game.

PeeJ 2008-05-03 03:14:45 PM
What they fail to mention is that the first round consists of 3 pints, 4 shots and a glass of wine each then gets bigger from there haha.

"When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around."

Words to live by.

inflin 2008-05-03 03:49:52 PM
Yeaaahh thats not true. My first pint today was 10am.

MisterPickles 2008-05-03 04:06:03 PM
Can we force them to drink like they used to? Please?

studebaker hoch 2008-05-03 04:24:46 PM
More people rely on cars now, and the DUI laws over there have gotten stricter.

The pubs are noticing less business than in the past.

We need to either
1) repeal the DUI laws and instead just ticket anyone who drives badly.

and

2) have a government mandate that there is a maximum allowable distance from any residence to a pub. No building would be allowed outside this distance unless the developer added extra taverns. Building codes.

Western Civilization is grinding to its wretched end. The English aren't drinking like they used to

Is "wretched" the past tense of wretch? As in, "He wretched his beer into the toilet?"

/yes, I know it's actually "retch"

Come on, Brits, Don't go wobbly on me now.

3steps 2008-05-03 05:45:42 PM
I wonder where the US would come in on that list??

In the 80's a beer at lunch was acceptable.

Today in alot of companies it would get you fired.

The story claimed that 10% of Brits still do a beer at lunch.

Do we?

/I mean the US in general
//Farkers don't count
///most of you guys go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to beer. ;-)

TheJoe03 [TotalFark] 2008-05-03 06:45:39 PM
Good for you Brits, there's nothing cool about being an alcoholic. I'm not anti-drinking, but I gotta say alcohol is the most devastating drug on this planet.

3steps

I have a beer (split a pitcher with friends) at lunch at least 2x a week.

Not fired yet.

MrZoner 2008-05-03 07:43:39 PM
I'm sure there is a way to pin this on the muslims.

Bravo.

As for being "too expensive", I thought I read not too long ago that the UK supermarkets were having a price war for beer...meaning lower prices. That article was before the hops shortage though.

/maybe substitute drugs? are they doping on E and whatnot instead of the booze ?

//with such little sunlight, England is not a country where the population stays sober...maybe a colder version of Seattle would be a good comparison

Flighty Windgriper 2008-05-04 02:25:13 AM
It's probably not as much fun now that women can have their drunken hubbies hauled away after a little recreational battering. A thousand years of tradition - poof!
