That's too obvious. The obvious solution is to enact massive tariffs on import hybrids on the one hand while extending the tax incentives for buying them on the other so the cost is driven up, but no real tax revenue is generated. Then you make the auto industry, the auto unions and the tree huggers happy at the same time. And you get more campaign donations. And you get re-elected.

We can't, to do so would be to admit that American cars are inferior, which America can never be. Thus, we must get rid of anything superior to the American brand. I suggest nuking it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

something like 70% or 80% of their production is in the USA...

more than some major "US" car manufacturers

1. Cut every federal department by 10% without cutting jobs (more than enough waste there); pay down national debt faster

2. Enact constitutional amendment capping spending at 98% of tax revenues, emergency spending only by approval of 3/4 of congress

3. No federal employee who earns over $80k will receive a pay raise, possibly a COLA though, unless a balanced budget plus cost of raises

4. Term limits on all of Congress at 12 years, complacency breeds corruption

Seabon 2008-05-03 11:43:10 AM
A saw a hummer the other day, I was suprised people are still driving those thing. At 10 miles/gal they're paying around $.40 for every mile that ticks on their odometer.

Ok, after doing a little checking the Camry Hybrid is assembled in the US. So there you go.

Really? Term limits? Not, say, the energy crisis? Terrorism?

I'm opposed to term limits, but I would support forbidding consecutive terms. The real problem is that it's hard to unseat an incumbent, regardless of their competence. But we shouldn't be dismissing good legislators to keep the bad ones from staying too long.

I mean, do you think Henry Clay should have been out after only 12 years?

Yep. We have to kick the career politicians out of DC or nothing beneficial to us is likely to ever occur there.

Psychotropic 2008-05-03 12:11:38 PM
I like how the asshat that sponsored the bill drives a fuel guzzling Ford Econoline Diesel that gets about 10 mpg.
But he runs it on used cooking grease so it's 'environmentally friendly'.

So there you have it. The answer to America's fuel problems and pollution is used cooking oil.
Do your patriotic duty and eat more deep fried foods. If you burn 2 gallons of fuel a day, you'll only need to eat about 200 lbs of fried food a day for your fair share of grease contribution.

Psychotropic: So there you have it. The answer to America's fuel problems and pollution is used cooking oil.

Only an idiot would believe that there is a single answer to our energy woes.

Running cars on cooking oil is one part of a many-faceted solution strategy.

Calling someone who is doing so an "asshat" is childish and not terribly helpful.

To be fair, the Ford Expedition mentioned in the article is probably more like a 3-ton monstosity.

Ford makes a nice hybrid SUV that will allow you to still compensate for your small penis.

Asa Phelps: they can drive any monstrosity they want, if they man up and pay for it themselves. and they can even still get reimbursed for the mileage.

What I came to say. This rule doesn't tell them what they can drive, just what the taxpayer will pay for them to drive. You get a company car, it's your choice if you want to drive what the company is offering.

Manfred J. Hattan 2008-05-03 12:27:26 PM
Wait. Representatives, the ones with 2-year jobs, are allowed to use their budgets to enter into long-term vehicle leases while Senators, the one with 6-year jobs, are not? I think there's a bigger problem here than Alcee Hastings not being able to use the on-ramps properly.

Fart_Machine 2008-05-03 01:16:27 PM
There are plenty of hybrids that are built in the US including Toyota. Unless he wants to drive his own car and pay for the gas, the Rep can GBTW and STFU.

Negative, we lost the bid for the engine plant.
And the Toyota plant in Indiana is actually Subaru's NA assembly facility that they share since Toyota bought GM's shares in Subaru.(Subaru and Toyota are working on a joint RWD 'sports car' to be released in NA around 2011/2012)

This only impacts cars they lease. If they're so upset, they can just buy the car they want and be done with that particular law.

Yeah, some of those vehicle monstosities look like they're going to gollop your car! I'm sure our represenators enjoy them, but I'd rather not have our monetaxes used to buy carhicles for them at all.

Remove all Republicans: Snowflake Tubbybottom: 1. Cut every federal department by 10% without cutting jobs (more than enough waste there); pay down national debt faster

FARK NO. Our governator tried that here and you know what happened? Teachers got fired, firefighters lost their new equipment, police officers were killed. There is no government waste. It is just a lie by conservatives trying to justify cutting the government at its knees. The government has already planned on this money, you can't just take it away from them.

What we need to do is go back to 1950s 90% marginal tax rates. Get more revenue into government and then we can start on paying down the debt, once we have the next host of new programs set.

Because after all, teachers, police, and firefighters are the proper purview of federal and state governments.....

FTA: "A Prius isn't made in the United States," complained Rep. Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley.

Then buy a wasteful SUV with your own money, ya douche.

As someone who grew up in Simi Valley, I always hated this guy. The times are a changing old man. This is one more reason congress critters should have term limits. So dinosaurs who have lived past their usefulness are forced to retired instead of being let make policy decisions.

FTA: Rep. Elton Gallegly of Simi Valley likes his taxpayer-funded Ford Expedition. He isn't worried that it's not the most fuel-efficient car. It's reliable, suits his mountainous district and is cheaper to lease than many other vehicles.

Simi Valley is the farkin suburbs. There are hills around it, but they are wide and well paved. An Expedition fits the district just like it fits a soccer mom to use one to drive her kids to school and pick up groceries.
