Right before insulting him. Nice.

"I can't wait to begin dialouge with representatives of this revolting criminal seperatist."

One of the many reasons why the Chinese fail at the whole world propaganda thing.

Now that all the monks are dead or locked up.

Which is odd since the Dalai Lama's goal is meaningful autonomy for Tibetans rather than complete separation from China. He knows how to take smaller steps.

Hey Lama! How about a little something, you know, for the effort?

Let's hope it is an auspicious conversation.

Who cares?

Wake me up when he's standing out in front of an idling Chinese tank.

my WAG (wild-ass guess) would be that the connotations in that line were inadvertently synthesized during the translation process, kind of like when you blind yourself with bad moonshine.

in the US, those tibetans would be called terrorists. Torching and beating civilians for their ethnicity. Razing, looting, and torching 900 shops owned by one ethnic group.

And I doubt Bush would EVER negotiate with them, no matter the PR climate.

I'm not saying I think Dalai Lama is a terrorist, and 6 months ago I supported full Tibetan autonomy, but now I feel those tibetans are getting more than they deserve for the moment.

I just came in here to say one thing, the same thing I say in every Tibet thread:

Although what China is doing in Tibet obviously horrible, it's much better than the despotic theocracy that was there before. We have this teddy-bear image of the Dalai Lama and his government-in-exile, but this is wholly undeserved. Prior to the Chinese invasion, the people of Tibet lived in abject poverty as serfs while the ruling class of lords and Lamas lived in opulent splendor and ruled over the people with an iron fist. China needs to get out of Tibet, but I would be very disappointed if the medieval horrorshow of the Lama's theocracy returned to power.

I think the last 60 years have altered the ruling structure in Tibet due to the Dalai Lama's upbringing in a different cultural environment than any of the previous Lamas. Perhaps some sort of group exists within the Tibetan monks that is biding its time until independence is achieved before subverting the next Lama to be a dictator but I think that if given the opportunity at this juncture an autonomous Tibet under the leadership of the current Dalai Lama would become a government similar to England's with the Dalai Lama and the monks filling in as the Monarchy.
