I'm paying off bills with mine. After that's over and done with, maybe I'll have a slushie.

Subby, no hookers and blow?

I'm disappointed.

VTGremlin 2008-05-03 10:54:16 AM
I'm purchasing a motorcycle, so the "give them $600 and they'll spend more" plan worked on me. But being Active Duty doesn't leave me with many other bills currently, and my 15 year old car is progressively getting worse and worse gas mileage, so in the long run, I might end up somewhere around breaking even or with a small gain, especially if I can sell the bike in 3-4 years.

Just because I think this rebate is political pandering and a monumentally stupid decision on the part of our government, and because they want me to spend it right away, I'm going to put it in my savings. It's my way of flipping them the bird for being so careless with my tax dollars.

I'm buying groceries after I put it in the bank. Not that I can't buy groceries now. But this isn't going to be any special sum of money that instantly gets me out of anything. My household doesn't have debt, besides the accumulated credit card, which we pay off monthly.

It seems the reasonable way to live, to me. We're looking at houses now, and I don't want to have to kill my savings for it.

So $600? meh. Into the bank with the rest of it.

/little miserly

I'd like a really long straw that reaches across the room and allows me to drink Weaver's slushie. Drink it up.

Those nut-job liberals at the Washington Post had an interesting idea on the editoral page yesterday: Give it to one of the charities like Fisher House that works to help wounded vets with the things the goverenment is too cheap to help out with, partially because of this rebate.

I'm sure there's a flaw in their reasoning, but I couldn't find it.

orbitalfreak 2008-05-03 11:33:18 AM
It's going in the bank account that I use regularly for regular stuff. I'm going to save this, along with whatever other money I can, to fund a vacation to see my parents and siblings, and then pay off credit card bills.

Most of ours is paying off the $900 we owe for federal taxes so it's pretty much a wash for us. As far as the remaining $300 goes I'm sure my wife will find some way to waste it.

I bought new windows for my house & didn't have to make up the difference from my savings account. Of course I did consider buying 1200 lottery tickets.

duncangonuts 2008-05-03 01:03:17 PM
Buying a new TV and sound system, only not really because I've been planning for the TV since last year. So really it's just going to replace the money I had already saved up anyway, but now I get to look irresponsible while I shop.

Naw, just kidding. Buying a TV. Zero debt and a 15-year hand-me-down TV. My electronic devices will thank me.

Kiz 2008-05-03 01:12:16 PM
I didn't get one, either.

Probably would have gone to pay off credit card debt, sadly.

Holy crap. Good thing he has his own column. If he didn't vent every once in a while, his head might explode from all the bullshiat-produced methane.

If people would like to do something a little teensy bit noble and stuff, I'm raising funds for breast cancer research by taking part in the 60-mile Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in Washington, DC. I've got to raise $2200 as a minimum just to take part in the walk and I've got (as of this posting) $515 to go. (Needless to say, I'd like to raise much more, as almost all of the money goes toward breast cancer research and prevention.)

If anyone would like to throw $10, $20, or even $50 (or more, hey, I'm not overly proud), the URL to donate is http://supportjayinthe3day.shorturl.com.

Every penny helps, folks -- and who knows? Money spent toward finding a cure or effective treatments might save the life of someone you love some day.

Mine will probably go towards bills... Either the car repair bill or towards my student loans. Bummer, too... I'd have loved to have gone to see my sister-in-law for a few days over the summer.
