(TheSpec.com) Video A living legend performed last night in my hometown, and it's obvious he's in his twilight years. Farkers, I give to you, the one, the only, Gordon Lightfoot. Damn, there's something in my eye   (thespec.com) divider line 17

I saw Gordon in a fairly small venue about 25 years ago. He was terrific. I am so sorry that his star is fading. Godspeed, Gordon, and thank you for a lifetime of music.

I saw him perform once and he was a prick to the audience...

But it IS sad that he didnt save enough money over the years to avoid having to go out and perform when he's not up to it.

From Wiki:

By January 2002, Lightfoot had 30 new songs written for his next studio album. He recorded guitar and vocal demos of some of these new songs. In September, before the second concert of a two-night stand in Orillia, Lightfoot suffered severe stomach pain and was airlifted to McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. He underwent surgery for a bleeding problem in his abdomen and remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit. The resulting coma lasted for almost two months. Get well wishes poured in from all around the world. All of his remaining 2002 concerts dates were cancelled. More than three months after being admitted to McMaster Medical Centre, Gordon Lightfoot was released in December to continue his recovery at home.

In 2003, Lightfoot underwent follow up surgery to continue the treatment of his abdominal condition. In November, he signed a new recording contract with Linus Entertainment and began rehearsing with his band for the first time since his illness.

I am guessing that it may be less about money and more about living life and doing your thing while you can. When you don't the end tends to come much more quickly. I'm not exactly a fan but I give him credit for being able to put on shoes, let alone perform. And I am guessing his real fans know the score and don't mind.

buffering...

I'd still pay to see him.

Going to see him in October in San Diego, if he's still alive. My dad took me twice when I was a kid and I've never forgotten it. One of the most underrated songwriters ever, IMO.

LAINE: Andrea Doria? Isn't that the one they did the song about?

JERRY: Edmund Fitzgerald.

ELIANE: I love Edmund Fitzgerald's voice.

JERRY: No, Gordon Lightfoot was the singer. Edmund Fitzgerald was the ship.

GEORGE: You could fit 15 people in that bathroom..

ELAINE: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat.

JERRY: Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens.

There's a nice little cut off a live Burton Cummings album where he does a spot-on "Gordon Lightfoot sings Maggie May."

Wake up Maggie, I think I've got something to say to you....

Too bad Gordon says he's done recording - wish he'd go see Rick Rubin to see if he can maybe get some of what Johnny Cash got.

My bad. I remember seeing it way back. Every time I here a Gordon Lightfoot song, I think of the "commercial." Back in the day, Saturday night was a great night for comedy. SNL (1st cast) followed by SCTV, followed by Dave Allen at Large.

I'm so glad to know Lightfoot is singing, anywhere, anytime. I saw him in concert many years ago, from a first row seat. I would love see him perform again. He is brilliant.
The youngster who doesn't know who Lightfoot is, hasn't been paying any attention to music history, or history told to music, or anything particularly literary.
All the Really Good stories are set to music, or told in poetry, so that people can remember them. Aida, Madama Butterfly, Romeo and Juliet, The Psalms.
Tell that kid to get off my lawn and go to the library.
