Maybe I'm just being curmudgeonly, but these stunts to show how hip and "just like us" the candidates are? They're really stupid. I don't want a candidate hip to pop culture or just like me. I want a candidate better than me. I want a candidate that's actually got a lot of sense with regard to foreign policy and the economy.

Yeah...which is why I don't give a shiat if Obama can bowl, Hillary can take shots or McCain can...whatever gimmicky shiat he pulls once the campaign for the general starts.

Amazingly this shiat seems to matter to some people. Downscale dipshiat uneducated voters and elitist dipshiat educated media pundits, primarily.

Slightly goofy, but if it calms down the people who think he is too uptight or whatever, I'm all for it. Better for him to win by being a bit of a dork on Letterman than to win by behaving like Hillary.

He should stop with the hand gestures. Good POTUS's don't do that more than necessary.

Agreed. I too, can play the saxophone (b-flat ones, anyway) and I wear boxer shorts. Clinton on MTV is where it started. The office of President wants its dignity returned. There are questions that you simply don't ask the president or a candidate for president. They are either private and undignified, or they have nothing to do with their ability to be president.

I'd be inclined to say that it started with Nixon on "Laugh-In," though at the time it was just considered a good joke and you really didn't see it as campaign schtick until Clinton. But I guess Nixon was the first President to do something like that.

At least he wasn't smashing ashtrays like Gore did when he went on Letterman. No matter what else Gore does I will always have that image of him stuck in my head.

This, pretty much. That wasn't nearly as funny as his Colbert appearance but, hey, I don't vote because a candidate's funny or not. I vote because he (or she) is the right candidate for the job.

This is something Republicans cannot do. When you consider yourself infallible and think in terms of black and white, you cannot self-deprecate.

gundamtsubasa cat is curmudgeonly.

Imagine how artificial and whiny Hillary would have been if she tried to do this. It doesn't reveal anything about the politics, but it can be a really good gut check to make sure you really are picking up the candidate's vibes. I just wish it hadn't been do obviously written by dave's normal top ten boys.

Really? (new window)

I farking hate Huckabee, and even I got to admit he's funny. I was looking for the SNL clip...but couldn't find it.

meshman 2008-05-03 12:26:24 PM
That's one of the worst top 10's ever. They're supposed to be funny, aren't they?

superlawyergirl [TotalFark] 2008-05-03 12:29:31 PM
a large majority of people are disheartened or feel they don't relate to their politician and therefore don't vote. if these people aren't activated enough to show up in november (and hillary continues to divide the democrat party), we could end up with another four years of a Republican president.

i saw the Colbert show where a creepy Hillary showed up and "fixed" Colbert's screen, John Edwards did the "Word of the Day", and Obama put someone "On Notice". it was ridiculous, but the average American is bound to watch Stephen Colbert and Letterman over CNN or NBC.

anything to keep Republicans out of office next year...

I haven't laughed at a top ten since 1997.

The key Democratic constituency that doesn't support Obama are the poor uneducated whites. Personally, I think it's silly, but if him appearing on TV to show them that he's a "regular guy" reassures them, then so be it.

I'm not a fan of either, but McCain was funny when he was on SNL. Huckabee was too.

I remember when Bob Dole went on Letterman's show after losing the 1996 POTUS election, and was funny. Everyone said that if Dole had showed some of that attitude during that campaign, he would have got a lot more votes.

The "Top 10" lists seem to have sucked for a very long time, now. And Obama, not that this is a strike against him in my book, never seems to do well with these sorts of things as it is. He always seems a little uptight. Huckabee, on the other hand--who I would never have voted for--was pretty good with this kind of stuff.

CokeBear 2008-05-03 02:20:52 PM
Thats it. I'm voting for Obama.

He's teh Barakiest.

Shorty Longstrokin 2008-05-03 02:36:15 PM
The Huckster was the funniest guy in this whole campaign -- dude performed in a band and everything.

I still think he would be a cool guy to hang out with, but as a president there iss nooo wayyy.

Did you see when all three candidates did that stupid "If I was a wrestler, this is my persona" thing? I've got news for you. Hildebeast and Obama sucked. McCain knocked it out of the park.

I was shocked too.
