Gobblefunk Tips

Gobblefunking is not too hard, once you get the hang of it. See how you get on and swap new gobblefunks with your friends. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Tip 1

Some of the best gobblefunks are words that (yet) exist but should because they sound just right for the thing they are describing. An example is when the crocodile imagines he will "gollup" up the children. The word sounds a bit like "gobble" and a bit like "swallow up" but it is brand new and just right. In the same way, you might say "mushed potato" rather than "mashed potato", but you're probably best off not saying this at the dinner table!

Tip 2

Some of the BFG's best gobblefunks are when he mixes up words or phrases, such as "skin and groans" instead of "skin and bones" or "wrivelling sneck" instead of "snivelling wreck".

Tip 3

A good way to start gobblefunking is by putting two words together. So, to describe a disastrous catastrophe, you might gobblefunk it, as the BFG does, into "disastrophe".

Tip 4

Once you have mastered "Gobblefunking for Beginners", you can become more ambitious still by creating strange similies. A "simile" sound complicated but its something that you use all the time in everyday speech - when you compare one thing to something else that it directly reminds you of. A normal simile might be something like "as bright as the sun", which makes perfect sense. To create a gobblefunk simile, all you do is make sure that the comparison makes no sense at all! Here are two of the BFG's best ones:

"You is as deaf as a dumpling!"

"We is helpless as horsefeather!"

My grandmother has used the word as long as I remember. I always thought it meant a silly person or something that doesn't make sense.
