Elitist!

What's "elitist" about the Navy and beer? For that matter, what's elitist about beer? [If you've ever been to a Fark party, you already know the answer to the second question is most assuredly "nothing."]

what's elitist about the navy? well, i would just point to the fact that once the vietcong found out who his father was, he became one of their prized captives. the north vietnamese seemed to think he was elite in some way.

and as for beer... nothing elite or elitist about beer. definitely something elite about being in the family that owns the company though. if you've ever been to a fark party, you know that people drink a lot of beer; it's a profitable industry.

he is in the elite on both counts. as for elitist? eh, i think that's a fairly meaningless term to begin with. nothing wrong with being successful or having a successful father.

Nestea Plunge: you're not cool unless you drink some crappy Belgian white beer brewed by blind monks in batches of one 12 pack per year.

pfff, that's nothing.

Attach your own weaknesses to your opponent early and often. That way, when the opponent points out the unfair psychological projection, you can charge them with "I know you are but what am I" politicking.

It's the Karl Rove way.

Elitism is an attitude, not an income bracket. I don't know if people really don't understand the difference or this is some sort of purposeful twisting by some folks.

People that accuse Barack Obama of being elitist are the elitist ones. They're just terrified of being called out on it.

SusanIvanova [TotalFark] 2008-05-01 04:11:44 PM
Elitism doesn't have too much to do with how much money or prestige you've got. It's to do with how much intelligence you display. Obama, generally speaking, doesn't try to hide the fact that he's got quite a sharp mind. This makes him an elitist.

e·lit·ism
-noun
1.practice of or belief in rule by an elite.
2.consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

funny thing... one definition is just the belief that those who are elite should probably be in charge. by that definition, i'm an elitist, because i don't want to put an idiot in office.

but the second definition, the one you're really calling on, is an attitude borne of status. if you have that attitude but don't have elite status, you're not elitist, you're just an asshole.

That just goes to show how stupid the people in this country really are.

Why on earth would you be against a President with a sharp mind? Someone who is well-spoken, educated, and intelligent? I know the bar was set quite low over the past few years... but can people really be so dumb that they have lost sight of the idea that the President should be far more intelligent than the average person, and not afraid to show it?

He's suffering with the blue collar voters and adjusting for the demographics of the remaining primaries. Frankly I don't think it's the elitist thing that hurt him in PA. He looks like he's starting to chase his tail.

This just goes to show the existence of the "black tax"...seems like no matter what position, a brother's always gotta work twice as hard as the white man.

White bands march with European precision...black bands march with attitude and bass...

I wouldn't say aspiring for your best to be in charge is elitism. It's more the attitude that they should be in charge because their elite status makes them automatically better than their inferiors, or that anyone who is not somehow of elite status is automatically unfit for ruling.

but the second definition, the one you're really calling on, is an attitude borne of status. if you have that attitude but don't have elite status, you're not elitist, you're just an asshole.

There's socio-economic elitism - good old fashioned snobbery - and intellectual elitism. I think it's the latter that people mean with Obama. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I think there's a difference.

It's not that they have lost sight. I contribute it more to the idea of self esteem that continues to infantilize our ideals and pursuits.

People don't want to believe that they can onbly achieve certain possiblities. How will they lie to their children about them being gifted and smart if the mirror to hold their accomplishments to reflects intelligence and sharp wit?

These are goldfish that don't want bigger bowls; they migth realize how insignificant they are.

We don't want to shock the system. Going from the current President immediately to a genius has the potential to irreparably crack the political system. We want to slowly ease into a genius president over several terms, starting with a small improvement and working our way up. Unfortunately this is unlikely as neither the Democrats nor the Republicans seem likely to nominate a ficus.

If I'm understanding you, precisely what you're getting at is that you think kids in hipster coffee houses spend their time looking at the rest of the world with sneering derision, or some such bullshiat.

Even if that were true, you could say the same after spending some time at the local honkeytonk, Young Republicans Club or 700 Club prayer meeting.

sigdiamond2000 [TotalFark] 2008-05-01 04:38:06 PM
I can't really define elitism, but I sure know it when I see it.
Like if someone uses a word I don't understand, it really grinds my gears because its like they're TRYING to tell me they think they're better than me, or trying to make me look bad in front of my old lady.
I'm a small business owner, so I come into contact with a LOT of different types of people.
I'd say that probably 95% of the people I come into contact with are elitists.
And don't even get me STARTED on coffee shops.
I went into one a couple months ago and the MENU didn't even look like English.
"Grande"? "Venti"? What is that gay shiat?
It pissed me off.
Try ordering a REGULAR "coffee" these days and you've got the PC police knocking down your door.
It's just a way for these egghead hipster types to feel SUPERIOR to everybody else.

The whole "elitism" argument is a bunch of crap, no matter who it's used against.

McCain and Clinton's message has been all about them. I will keep you save. I will give you healthcare. I will answer the phone at 3 AM.

Obama's message has been the most inclusive. WE can bring needed change.

Since when did getting shot down and captured by the enemy make one a war hero? Here is a list of actual war heroes from Vietnam, and they all did a lot more than Sen. McCain to distinguish themselves in that conflict.
