You either haven't listened to the best anything Bowie's ever done, or you haven't heard the best that Hillary Duff's ever done.

His own voice.

Still a great musician -- better businessman though.

I'm no Duff fan, and I like some of Bowie's stuff, but this is just bullshiat.

My daughter is ten and, luckily for me, she can't stand Duff, Montana or HSM. Her tastes run more to Weird Al Yankovic and They Might Be Giants.

QFT. Man Who Fell to Earth -- classic, classic film.
Labyrinth has amazing puppetry & a kickass soundtrack.

But really... what about The Prestige? Hmm??

I've seen Bowie at Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, LCD Soundsystem, and I regularly hear my friend's spotting him at various bizarre shows.

SO yeah, that's what he's listening to.

And he's like a billion years old.

Mr_Fabulous 2008-05-01 10:05:39 AM
My daughter used to listen to Hilary Duff, back when she was in middle school. I heard it. It wasn't nearly as bad as the bubblegum-pop of my generation. Actually had some crunchy guitar riffs on a couple of songs. I've heard worse.

Compare it to Bowie's "Wild Is the Wind" and tell me which is more horrifying. I dare you.

/bowie fan, actually

Pretentious? Have you ever heard him speak or seen him interviewed? He's a pretty humble dude and simply loves making music.

Fark.com = using words like "pretentious" "fascist" and the like whenever they don't like something.

Overrated? Go listen to Five Years and any live version of Heroes and think a little harder about it.

Damn it, there I go forgetting this is Fark again ... never mind, resume listening to Rush.

nopokerface [TotalFark] 2008-05-01 10:21:09 AM
WaltzingMathilda: "pretentious"

He thinks quite highly of himself. While he is talented, there is no need to bash other artists. It detracts from him when he does it. I never said he wasn't good, he is, but he is overrated. His schtick was pretty cool, but nothing to go gaga over.

I know I'm probably some sort of freak, but my favorite music at the age of 7 was Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, and Pink Floyd.

On a slightly related note: I played The Robots by Kraftwerk for my 3-year-old son yesterday, and he loved it.

David Bowie is also really into the Arcade Fire. They played together at some VH1 fashion show thing, you can find it online. They did Five Years, Heroes(I think) and Wake Up. Five Years from that show is one of my favorite versions ever.

Schtick? He killed Ziggy Stardust almost as soon as he was birthed. For the rest of his career he just wrote great music. The guy is a legend. It's not an "album sales = quality" argument at all, either. You don't have to think he's as good as other people do, but his impact on rock is far too widespread to say he's overrated. If you want, do a little digging and see how many artists have covered his songs as a tribute.

There's that word again, "overrated." Dude, they were able to fill up the Hollywood Bowl after only 2 (musically fantastic) records, both released on an independent label. Not too many people get to play the bowl, and many don't fill it.

I love them both. I agree that there is no accounting for taste ... and by that measure, there is no "over-rated."

TROLL!?

If not, Bowie is up there with the best you silly person.

nopokerface: I have to admit he's a talented guitar player.

If you have to admit that much, I think you might have to rethink your assessment of Bowie because it's just true that Bowie wtfpwns Clapton.

WaltzingMathilda: There's that word again, "overrated."

No doubt! Saying that something is overrated is way overrated.

I_Love_Cheesecake: There's no accounting for taste.

I don't agree here. I mean, just because people have different views about what they'd like to listen to, to which bands are better than others, there are certain ways of comparing the relative merits of this or that band or song along agreed upon indexes of evaluation.

For example, suppose that one thing of value, one thing that makes a singer 'good' is that they can hit notes without having to use pitch-correcting software, such as Pro-Tools, or what have you. Bowie needn't do that. I doubt he ever does that in the studio, unless he's farking around with modulating things, doing multiple layers, etc. That is, he doesn't HAVE to in order to sound good. Anyone wanna bet that Hillary Duff scores as well as Bowie on that index? SO, then, we have a pretty good way of judging the relative merits of Bowie and Duff without throwing up our hands and going "oh there is no accounting for taste."

Second, does Duff write her own songs? Does she even play an instrument? I dunno. Even so, I doubt she's very skilled, and has others propping her up. Does Bowie? Nah, he has collaborators, sure, but that's something totally different. He is an accomplished artist.

Put it this way, there is a lot more skill, craft, technique, talent, and the like in Bowie's music than there is in Duff's.

So, it's hard to say that Duff > Bowie.

UNLESS you really feel like eating a dirty, maggot infested hot dog than prime rib. Because that's what Duff is to Bowie.

So, yeah, someone who'd rather eat a dirty, maggot infested hot dog rather than prime rib, well, they REALLY do have some real bad taste there....
