Bah, we won't be able to afford driving to a fast food place soon anyway so they might as well charge as much as they want.

If we can use taxes to help incentivize people to eat healthy Soylent Green and save our forests, and feed the world, well, I'm all for it.

Excellent, if these trends persist then my dream of a law mandating sterilization of those with an IQ under 100 will be realized just before I die...

Why is this "Stupid?" A key aspect of taxation is to encourage good things and discourage bad ones.

Lusiphur 2008-05-01 12:29:47 AM
So I assume the same tax will apply to haute cuisine bakeries and confectioners that sell 1000 calorie bon-bons slathered in butter-cream? Or are we going with the whole "tax the poor" thing.

Hmm, those anti-smokers shoulda listened. One success for nanny leads to another.

TrepanningForGold: Why is this "Stupid?" A key aspect of taxation is to encourage good things and discourage bad ones.

Because lower income families and individuals don't have many options.

That said, poor people managed to eat in overcrowded cities before there was fast food. Now, it's the overbearing option.

So...soon your internet will be taxed because it is making you a fatass. You think there is a limit on what people consider "bad"?

Lived in a town called Salmon Arm BC many years ago. Some fat ass council man thought a takeout tax for garbage collection of the crap that people throw away after eating take out.

/What are garbage cans anyways?
//And why are there none near a fast food place?

try to find fresh veggies and fruit in a poor urban area - it's not as easy as you'd think - camden and newark are two examples

No. Economic paternalism is bad. Taxation is to pay for shiat. Sin taxes are one of the few areas where I can see the 'slippery slope' argument being legit.

TrepanningForGold: Why is this "Stupid?" A key aspect of taxation is to encourage good things and discourage bad ones.

No, it isn't! It's a "necessary evil" to raise money for a limited government that, best case, will protect our individual rights and serve as a mediator, where needed, in disputes.

hovsm 2008-05-01 12:38:32 AM
I like how it says that it "could" help fund struggling hospitals. Which means that they want you to think it is for something good but it really isn't. Like when they say "the lottery will be used to fund our education", fifteen years later and not a dime from the lotto spent on education.

TrepanningForGold: Why is this "Stupid?" A key aspect of taxation is to encourage good things and discourage bad ones.

Yeah, look how it's stopped people from smoking. And while I'm at it, who determines what the "good" things are and what the "bad" things are? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for stickin' it to Fatty, but how long after that does the government decide ice cream is bad? Or soda? Or any restaraunt's food? How about sugary cereals from the store? Cake mixes? Certain meats? You get my drift?

As long as you don't like red meat, grilling, dairy products, eggs and pasta...the surgeon general might let you slide.

dbubb: try to find fresh veggies and fruit in a poor urban area

Are you kidding me? I lived outside Newark for 7 years, and there were plenty of farmers markets, plenty of outdoor markets, the bodegas have good selections of produce, it really is not hard to find, so long as you actually care enough to look.

dbubb: try to find fresh veggies and fruit in a poor urban area - it's not as easy as you'd think - camden and newark are two examples

Exactly my point. Even then, the quality is lower.

We pay farmers to grow corn and meat, two of the worst things for you. Our farm funding contradicts what the FDA lists in the food pyramid. So, we have plenty of corn-fed meat and corn-syrup. It's cheap and plentiful.

Fast food joints pop up like cancer, instead of regular mom and pop markets that sell normal food.

How do you think my great-grandmother raised six kids during the depression on her own, McDonald's?

A.) There often aren't alternatives in lower-class neighborhoods.
B.) People don't have the time.
C.) People today probably wouldn't make their kids pitch in like my grandmother had to for her family. They sit in front of the TV and play Xbox.

Final conclusion: The corporations, the government, and the people all suck in unison.

Poor people can't afford to drive 20 miles out of town to get fresh veggies.

I don't eat fast food because I'm poor, I'm poor because I eat fast food all the time. It's cheap, but it adds up fast if you eat it regularly, which I do.

Can we enforce the tax doubly on women since they have a harder time losing the weight? Methinks yes, we can and should.

Be careful or your fingers will get so fat you can't effectively type with them, you'll need an extra-large keyboard with huge keys, like the phone I was GISing for but couldn't find, so you get this instead.

Fatty.

Fresh meat and veggies are MORE expensive. Spaghettios...not so much.
