I lost all respect (hahahaha) for meatloaf when he did that AT&T GoPhone commercial with that constipated kid.

Second favorite song, oddly enough, "Carroll County Accident" by Porter Wagoner.

First Post 2008-04-28 03:10:43 AM
Long version of that commercial

Not a Rickroll. More like...a Meatroll.

(I didn't realize that was Tiffany playing the part of Mrs. Loaf)

I vote it #1 song that causes me to lunge for the radio's off button.

/piece of crap

I love that song but for some reason the sound system always breaks down when I play it on the bar's jukebox.

Thank you frostus for showing me I'm not the only one who thinks that song is a total POS.

Whenever I see that commercial I wanna punch him in the face.

Meat Loaf's rock classic "Bat Out Of Hell" was voted the number one driving anthem in a survey of drivers

What, no "breaking the law" or "arrive alive"?

Highway Star - Deep Purple
Radar Love - Golden Earring
Red Barchetta - Rush
I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
Hot Rod Lincoln - Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen

/lame survey

AJace 2008-04-28 04:52:50 AM
I can think of a couple better "driving" songs off the top of my head.

Radar Love by Golden Earring.
Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe
Riders on the Storm by The Doors
Baba O'Reilly by The Who
Still the Same by Bob Seger
Separate Ways by Journey
Runnin' on Empty by Jackson Browne

I didn't realize it would turn into a classic rock post, but hearing these songs on the radio when you're in your car just put you into a driving groove, at least they do for me anyways. You could probably put most Zeppelin songs on a list like that as well. I dig the 'Loaf, but "Bat Out of Hell" just doesn't do it as a roadtrip song for me.

lithappens 2008-04-28 05:03:56 AM
Didn't Top Gear do this a few years ago? And didn't they HATE this exact song? I seem to remember that happenening...

I will behave, I will behave, I will behave, I will behave, I will behave, I will behave.

/only a portion of your list is actually listenable
//and your are correct concerning Zeppelin
///I also like Aerosmith for cruising (Pump or Permanent Vacation)

A song with a horrific motorcycle accident in it is a good driving song? Whaaaa?

Haha. You're absolutely right - that kid probably thinks he looks rockin', but he is trying way too hard.

padraig 2008-04-28 06:44:59 AM
I don't think I've ever heard a single Meatloaf song I did not hate. Yes, hate. Dry, with no flavor, kind of like a... well... meatloaf.

Maybe it was because my first intorduction to Meatloaf was that godawful "I'll do Anything for Love" song (yes, I'm young. You get off my farking lawn), but I've yet to understand the appeal of this guy..

seriously, people listened to this shiat and made his album one of the best selling debuts...?

Baumer 2008-04-28 08:39:10 AM
I like either "shot, shot" by Gomez or 2+2=5 by Radiohead for driving. Actually, pretty much anything by DragonForce is pretty good for highway tunes, too.

galactus5000 2008-04-28 08:40:41 AM
Number one for me - anything featured on GTA:SA, or, oddly enough, season one of Supernatural.

It depends on the mood I'm in, and how much of a rush.

If I'm late, I'll slap in some Motorhead like "(We Are) The Roadcrew", or if I'm late and in an especially bad mood "Good Mourning/Black Friday" by Megadeth.

But really, this has to be the best driving song ever written, double entendres and all:
Hold Tight

(Not a Rickroll. More of a Patty, Maxene, and LaVerne-roll)

bingo the psych-o 2008-04-28 09:47:12 AM
I came here for "Radar Love" and "Highway Star" and was not disappointed. I would also add Back In Black by AC/DC. Not the single, the entire album.

lithappens: Didn't Top Gear do this a few years ago? And didn't they HATE this exact song? I seem to remember that happenening...

Yeah, they did a 'driving' montage of people being pulled over, cars being impounded, and gridlock, in an attempt to knock it down from #1. I think it ended up at #3 in the end, behind "Can't Stop Me Now" and "Radar Love."

I will agree with the DragonForce. And would also suggest that there are a few joe satriani songs, that are wonderful for driving. Check out summer song, mystical potato head groove things, surfing with the alien to name a few.

Radar love would be my pick for number one driving song

wow... that was very cheesy, but Tiffany was hot so that kind of made up for it... lolz

I always thought Meatloaf was Waaaaaaaaaaaayy Overrated!
Best drivin' song?
How about, "Runnin Down a Dream" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers or the classic "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf or "I can't drive 55" by Sammy Hagar?

Here's the deal. You have a guy with a BIG voice, who is able to put a lot of emotion and feeling into his singing. He teams up with a guy who lives and breathes musicals, broadway, etc, and has a penchant for the melodramatic.

You put them together and you get Bat out of Hell. Stop trying to make sense of it and treating it like normal music and think of it as a love letter to bombastic rock and roll.

mightybaldking 2008-04-28 11:22:24 AM
I know it's about flying, but there's something about Nazareth's cover of This Flight Tonight (youtube, pops, not a rick roll) that makes me just want to go 149 km/h down the highway. (They take your car at 150, so I play it safe.) I think it's that awesome bass line.

THIS!

You might as well criticize Bohemian Rhapsody.

I don't think I've heard a Meatloaf song that didn't sound like bat out of hell. All his songs sound the same to me.Give me any Led Zepplin for driving or most of the stuff mentioned above.

/Can't stand Meatloaf myself.
//not into cheesy rock opera sounding crap.

Jesus Built my Hotrod is my number one tune for driving.
Kinda disappointed not to see it mentioned here, but maybe it's just too obvious.

Fans of the band with "Johnny Was a Race Car Driver", but the correct answer is "Over the Electric Grapevine" by Primus.

Oh, just thought of another good one:

Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

There are plenty of great songs which make driving fun, but only a handful which actually are *about* driving.

Here's another:

80 by Green Day

Love the one above because I live right off of Interstate 80 and drive it all the time.

NimbleWalrus 2008-04-28 02:40:09 PM
"Fuel" by Metallica.

/you wanna fight about it?

The album Bat Out of Hell is great--I have a copy myself. Some of the songs get a bit LONG after listening to them over and over again, but they are still very good. And yet, I still wouldn't consider the song BOOH to be the all-time great driving anthem. I find it humorous that England has such a Meatloaf fetish.

From wikipedia: [Meat Loaf] has retained iconic status and popularity in Europe, especially the UK, where he ranks 23rd for number of weeks overall spent on the charts, and is one of only two artists with an album never to have left the music charts.

Gotta agree with the votes for Radar Love

A couple more that get my vote:

Fuel - Metallica
Fortunate Son - Creedance Clearwater Revivial
