Considering most farkers weren't born when the album originally came out, I'd say they shouldn't have an opinion.

So only bad people would have an opinion on it since only the good die young.

If you like this album, you must hear the 5.1 surround-sound mix that is on the SACD.

Of course, if you like this album, you have it on LP, CD, SACD, and will soon buy the 30th anniversary multi-disc 48-page book Strangergasm. And you'll shell out $300 for the concert.

Billy Joel was a guilty pleasure when I spent most of my time listening to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. He put on a pretty good show too.

Still, I won't buy this as I already own everything of his that I like.

I thought that too until I received 12 Gardens Live as a gift. It was perfect relief for an ungodly Atlanta traffic jam.

My mother had a thing for Billy Joel. Subsequently, she had all of his albums on vinyl. And then she went and got rid of them (and the rest of her collection) while I was away at school. I was pissed because I was planning on... "borrowing" it.

As for Joel: I've always liked him, but even as a dedicated music nerd, I've always operated under the assumption that a comprehensive best of is all anyone really needs of his work. Would anyone care to dispute this (he asks, knowing he's posting in a forum that will undoubtedly be filled with Joel-supporters, given the topic), and if so, where should I start?

I'd venture that the average farker was born back then. We've got a lot of Gen Xers here which really dig all that stuff.

/Got over Billy Joel a while ago

Ah, the soundtrack of my Long Island Catholic boy youth....

He was never this awesome before or since. Great album.

I, too, grew up listening to Billy Joel [along with other bands/artists, of course]. first album i had was the GH I and II CD.
I have 52nd street and Glass Houses on Vinyl. They're pretty good. I believe that 52nd Street won a few Grammy's.
Oh, and Turnstiles is very underrated. [it's a great album, but I don't think it ever got above #100 on the Billboard Charts].

Ersatz music with ersatz emotion for ersatz people. And a drunk driving asshole to boot. Hope he wraps himself around a pole before taking someone else out.

/at least he knows that mutation, natural selection, recombination and gene flow are the keys to understanding evolution

It's a good record. Have a great '77 bootleg of him, also. Curious to see the OGWT show.

The Radiohead thread is elsewhere. Go fap there.

There's only one word to describe album reissues like this.

Shameless.

Glass Houses rocked.
I kind of wish The Stranger had been produced by Joey Ramone,,,

Remember that he wasn't so much anti-Catholic as he was pro-lust.

/paraphrasing the artist's words

The stranger was the first album I ever owned

Still love it

will FINALLY see him live in a few weeks!

VickInABox 2008-04-28 08:32:04 AM
Heard this on many a long car trip but I agree that a best-of set is all you need. He's worth seeing live though--saw him a couple of years ago in Philadelphia and he put on a great show. Plus he played Highway To Hell on guitar with his roadie singing. That was unexpected.

Normally, I'm not real big on reissues with bonus goodies, 'cause the goodies aren't usually that great. This one looks like a winner, though.

I never got this guy. Seemed like an overbearing, obnoxious jerk, the world revolves around NY/NJ kinda guy. Moderately talented, but ... way not worth the adulation.

Meh. Every generation should have a drunken noodler who writes and performs catchy little tunes to which you can drunkenly sway and sing along with your buds and buddettes.

Ben Folds should have gotten drunk and sappy on occasion.

drunk, drunk, drunkenly, drunkard

Damn it. I better get rid of all my music from pre-1979 (my DOB). shiat. I liked a lot of it too. But I guess since I'm not allowed to hate any of it, I'm not allowed to like any of it. My oh my, how will these artists be remembered? I guess we'll have to trust the writers of all those top 10 blogs and all the Billboard polls to know who was good back in their day.
