Could somebody explain to me why this was banned? I was strange, but that's about it.

Strange was still illegal in 1970.

Funny, I've been a fan of Beefheart for years, but I never heard of that album.

/Awesome TV spot, though!

and thats because its been out of print for quite some time... quite a shame really.. its the follow up to trout mask replica, sounds a lot like it, although it does have a little more of those "difficult" moments in it... its still a must

thats the cover

It was banned because of the assumed sexual reference the title makes. If I remember correctly, Captain explained that it's about shedding the labels around yourself or something like that.

Because it was 1970.

You can't compare 1970 to 2008 in terms of broadcast decency. Rent the 'Love American Style' DVDs to see what was considered cutting edge back then. Bonus: they're very entertaining.

Safe As Milk is one of my favorite albums ever. Beefheart rules.

That's just mean, and even worse than a RickRoll.

Exactly. The first R-rated movie I saw was "The Hospital" (1971). Now it's shown on TV uncut. Same goes for "Jaws". It had a R rating when it was originally released, but now it's been downgraded to PG.

It is a shame this album has been out of print for years. However, on at least 2 occasions they have repressed limited copies on vinyl.

/Owns a vinyl repressing
//Great album

I absolutely lerv Trout Mask Replica. ..and I don't use that word frivolously. "Old Fart At Play" is a little audio-movie. That would make such a great cartoon.
He's an original. Ain't nothing like Beefheart's music.

Supposedly, the TV station that aired it was flooded with complaints because it was so weird and no one understood what it was supposed to be about. Because of the mass of complaints, they refused to air it ever again.

/according to the BBC documentary "The Artist Formerly Known As Captain Beefheart".

this is my fave beefheart album!!! it is incredibly awesome. i like it much better than trout mask replica.
Safe as Milk is also awesome but that's comparing apples to oranges, style-wise.

I still to this day don't get Frank Zappa. I'm sorry, I really want to because I like weird rock. :`(

Start with "Hot Rats" and go from there.
Trust me.

I have rescued MANY people from Zappa/confusion-hate syndrome with that record alone.

I have actually had to trick people who claim they "hate" Zappa into listening to it. I tell them it is some "obscure jazz composer" (I do have to skip over "Willie the Pimp" as that is a giveaway)

All are redeemed by "Hot Rats"

i love captain beefheart
even though i can't hardly stand to listen to it most times

but that's why i love it when i DO listen

as for Hot Rats, that is a terrific collaboration between the two, Beefheart's vocals on Zappa's title track are a good balance.

the album as a whole is impeccable, and if you like a great jazz or blues instrumental, it is a good place to start as Craigdamage suggests.

there are many sides to Zappa, and one would be foolish to abandon exploration of his work, or ignore his importance to the history of music.

I wonder if the shocker was intentional.
