Tarr was wearing a khaki shirt with Arizona Department of Public Safety patches on it. Underneath, he wore an "I (heart) Arizona" T-shirt. A pair of official Arpaio souvenir pink boxer shorts and a hat completed the look.

Tarr was accused of impersonating an officer.

this was huge news locally back when it happened. i kinda recall Sheriff Joke's people goading the local police department to arrest the guy on the charges of impersonating a police officer.

But, when the cops pointed out Mr. Tarr, at that point a minor celebrity due to the ubiquity of the "Joe Arizona" political commercials was, *ahem*, WEARING PINK BOXER SHORTS, they declined to arrest him. The Sheriff's office then arrested the guy.

Thanks, Nickel Bag Joe! Six years and $125,000 later (not to mention whatever attorney's fees this took), justice has been served!

Ayup, I think he really, really was impersonating a uniformed law enforcement officer.

ricky... - came in here to post the same sentences from TFA that you did. Thanx.

I wish there was a way for you AZ folks to support the sheriff's methods you like (if any) and yet make it clear how evil this false-arrest harassment garbage is.

The county will also pay out $125,000 to Nick Tarr, arrested by sheriff's deputies six years ago and charged with impersonating a police officer.

In 2002, Tarr had been hired by horse- and dog-track owners as a pitchman for a proposition to allow slot machines at tracks.

Tarr played "Joe Arizona," a character in a series of campaign commercials. Arpaio opposed the proposition.

Does Sherrif Joe realize he's not King Joe?

It appears not.

I'm stunned by the Phoenix residents who love Sheriff Joe. Just wait until they get hauled in on some trumped up charge and are thrown in a tent in the Arizona heat. The guy is a tin-plated dictator with delusions of grandeur.

Y'know, back in the day he might have been able to keep this a purely local affair. But with a global wired world, if he keeps it up long enough eventually Sherriff Joe is gonna attract the wrong kind of attention. No matter how big a deal you are, someone out there is always bigger and/or better. He keeps making an ass of himself, getting people killed and/or turning actors into political prisoners he's going to attract the sort of attention you don't want.

He keeps it up long enough and he'll be a tin-plated dictator doing time in a Federal prison. Eventually someone on the national level will realize that our good old boy boss hog wannabe will make more political capitol as a prisoner than wearing a badge.

It's never a good idea to attract negative national press coverage.

i don't know the ins and outs of it well enough to speak in detail, but the alternative paper (Phoenix New Times) has written dozens of articles about Sheriff Joe's allegedly vast real estate holdings.

Again, I don't know the specifics, but the story kinda boils down to this: he apparently owns millions of dollars of real estate, yet his only income is a relatively small federal pension and his sheriff's salary. He's apparently used a state law barring public disclosure such as addresses, mortgages, deeds of trust, etc., for real estate belonging to judges, politicans, and LEOs to "hide" the value and purchase price of the real estate.

It doesn't pass the smell test.

Or some such.

Dig deep enough into our good buddies finances and I'm sure something odd will pop up. And if it's exposed at a national level (as is easily accomplished in an era of 24/7 always online news), then Boss Hog will be in some seriously bad trouble.

Once again, Sheriff Joke proves what a joke he is. First of all I love how he brags about his involvement in the War on Drugs. Got news for ya dickhead, drugs won.

I imagine Sheriff Joke wins every election because the opposition puts up some Hug-a-Thug liberal who doesn't grasp that some people are indeed mopes who need to be locked up.

But Arpiao is nothing more than an attention whoring asshole who's gonna end up costing the taxpayers a boatload of money. No one wants pampered criminals, but I can think of few who want an attention whore "sheriff" that thinks he's above the law.

As for inmates killing each other, it happened to Jeffery Dahmer. No one complained then.

That would be all great and wonderful if the system had a perfect record of never imprisoning innocents.

Why does he continue to be re-elected?

His methods do nothing to actually reduce the crime rate in his county.

One of the good things about living in the Phoenix area is that I can vote against Attention Whore Joe next election. I don't think people who've been convicted of crimes should be coddled, but Joe's handling of Maricopa County prisoners is more about political grandstanding than about good law enforcement.

I don't mind the tents. I do mind the fact that he is locking up illegal immigrants under a statue meant to lock up the human smugglers, not the actual immigrants. Although I don't like that my tax dollars go to pay for inmates that refuse to follow my society's rules, there is no reason to be as harsh on them as he is. They aren't going to be in his jail forever and when they get out, they will not have been reformed at all, they will just be unhappy.

Not all the people held in the jail have been to trial yet. Convicted and accused but not yet convicted both stay in the tent jail. Referring to the inmates of the jail as criminals is sloppy thinking that has nothing to do with the adequacy or inadequacy of the tents or the conditions within them.

Rreal 2008-04-27 06:33:10 PM
Considering this guy's actions are already costing the county/state there into the millions due to lost suits.. I'm suprised this pendejo is still in office

SchlingFo: Why does he continue to be re-elected?

You got it. His recent crime suppression sweeps have been nothing bit an excuse to intimidate brown people. The mayor of Guadalupe got so sick of it that she has told the Sheriff's office that the town no longer requires his services.

Now look, I have no problem with checking immigration status at a normal traffic stop (but it has to be asked in all cases, no profiling), but these roundups that he does are just a huge waste of taxpayer money. Yes, illegal immigrants are breaking the law, but taking hundreds of deputies, the SWAT Team, and police helicopters to go get them is a huge waste of resources, especially when those resources could be better used to serve warrants and go after violent criminals. If Joe was doing the same thing to, say, jaywalkers, then the outcry would be tremendous.

ShaniquaDon'tLiveHereNoMo' 2008-04-27 06:33:58 PM
Arizona residents must be among the most retarded of all Americans, which is saying a lot. If you continue to re-elect a sheriff who fails to lower the crime rate whilst constantly exposing the county to million-dollar lawsuits, you are farking braindead.

Dumbass conservatives happily hand over their money to fund these ridiculous stunts.

Sad part is if he ever does go to jail it will be a Federal Minimum Security and he won't have to eat green bologna sammies 3 times a day like his tent city inmates.

swahnhennessy 2008-04-27 06:38:48 PM
That he's remained sheriff for so long is a sad statement on the populace of Maricopa County.

Seigneur 2008-04-27 06:39:15 PM
Freschel: /He'll get re-elected.

Because he upholds the law.. simple as that.

All an inmate needs is a place to sleep and food. That doesn't mean they automatically get four walls, cable TV, high quality food and a college education. People in jail are there to be punished for a crime they were convicted of doing.
It is not meant to be a vacation.

All Apologies 2008-04-27 06:39:42 PM
Sheriff Joe is an embarrassment to AZ, not only is he costing the state millions of dollars with this abuse of power, but his direction of law enforcement is not beneficial to the state. The game plan for Sheriff Joe is to focus on whatever will get him the most attention, so currently, there is far too much focus on DUIs and illegal immigration. I'm not in favor of drunk driving, but you would think that it is the states only problem, as much as they go on about it. It gets media attention though, and makes the Sheriff look tough, so it goes on.

The tide of public opinion is starting to turn though, since his ineptitude is bringing national attention to a state that is trying really hard to raise its status.

When Sheriff Joe falls, he's going to fall hard, he's been especially arrogant for a tinpot dictator.

Voting for sheriffs and judges is farking ridiculous. The legal system should not have to pander to the idiots who think justice and vengeance are synonymous.

Joe Arpaio clearly has a lot of scars from his childhood and the death of his mother and abandonment by his father. I can't stand types like him. They use law enforcement as a way to deal with their own neuroses.

Reasonable, well-adjusted people don't get off on abusing other human beings. A reasonable sheriff would develop a drinking problem due to the guilt of treating humans so badly in the name of some perverse definition of justice.

Joe reminds me of the type of persons that is looking for a justified reason to shoot somebody. Decent LEOs are torn apart by having to do such things.
