They want a state that is friendly to those who practice bestiality I presume.

So, 3 of the 25 people who live in Oregon want their own state? That's...dumb.

I used to live there, it is a beautiful place to live. If there were any hope of decent paying job there I would move back.

FTA: A small group of people from Hood River are interesting in making eastern Oregon its own state.

Like the AP copy editors skills, the idea has teh fail.

Red counties vs Blue counties.

That was kind of my initial take, but the reason given isn't even that noble.

FTA: He said during his travels around Eastern Oregon in recent years, he and his partner heard a steady theme of how the western part of the state gets all the benefits.

In other words, they're whiny little biatches who think they're getting the shaft because they don't live in the more-populated coastal counties.

Typical Urban-Rural divide. I live in Portland and grew up in Seattle, they are pretty similar in this way. WA has had a similar group push for Eastern Washington to become a separate state. How about E. OR and E. WA join into a new state, and W. OR and W. WA each become a new state. Then we have one new Red state with nothing in it, and two new Blue states with all the people, economic centers, etc. Then watch the new state fall apart because they can't live off the tax revenues from the western part of their old states.

Well Alaska wants to be its own country, so if we take them out, and add in East Bumf*ck Oregon as it's own state, we can keep 50.

The economic conditions between west Oregon and east Oregon are very different. West Oregon is more of an industrial, tech based economy, while eastern Oregon is an agricultural based economy. This makes dividing tax dollars evenly and such difficult, and leads to hard feelings between east and west. East Oregon doesn't see why it should help repair tons of roads, sewer lines, and other such city projects that they might never see or use. West Oregon feels the same about tax money used on things in east Oregon.

Washington state is facing a similar issue at the moment as well. What they really should do is just split east Oregon and east Washington into one state, and west Washington and west Oregon into another state.

/lived on both sides of the divide
//yes, there are some valid complaints

I went camping with my kids there once. A bunch of "well intentioned" guys (aka assholes) carrying rifles forced us to leave. They can have that arid area but don't ask for any water. I want water. I want water. I want water. I want water.

The_Talented_Mr_Richards 2008-04-27 03:58:06 PM
I know the article talked about tax revenues divided... but where do they think tax money comes from? It's not produced by square mile, but per capita and by businesses. They don't get as much tax money, because they produce less.

I mean, a cultural divide is one thing, but that's just bad economics it seems like.

When I was 18, a did a Greyhound bus from Portland, OR to Washington DC. I learned an important lesson about American Geography: Between Portland, Oregon and Lincoln, Nebraska, the USA is nothing but a huge desolate wasteland. Miles and miles of absolutely nothing. I was told that there were more cows than people in Wyoming, but learned better when I didn't see any cattle either. There's nothing like seeing the region if you've been living in a big eastern city your whole life for giving you a better perspective on geography, politics, or life/universe/everything in general.

Oh, there are cows out here. They're just hidden away in a barn somewhere. That's why WY meat tastes like shiat. There's nothing for the animals to eat but whatever gets shipped in, usually cheap, tasteless mush.

I've always been wondering how to do that. Was toying around with 3-seven star rows with 5-six star rows, but that looks much better.

brantgoose 2008-04-27 04:04:59 PM
I agree with Grandpa Simpson--there are too many states. Do you really need two Dakotas and two Carolinas? What' the point of Rhode Island? But if you want names for new states, I'm your man: New Oregon; Trans-Montana*; Utter Idaho; Southern British Columbia; East Cascadia; Idaho Private; Little Canada....
*I know it doesn't border Montana, but I like the sound of than one.

whidbey [TotalFark] 2008-04-27 04:05:26 PM
It really annoys me that both sides of the state can't see what the other has to offer. And yes, Eastern Oregon would be totally retarded without the culture and society bigger cities West of the crest have to offer. Stop fooling yourselves.

If it were legislated by Farkers I would probably move there. Sure, Caturday would be a state holiday, but besides that the laws would probably be more sensible than most states.

You live next to Washington. Now, I live next to Oregon. And, other than no sales tax, they can keep it.

For that matter, maybe northern Idaho would like to join easter Washington. Then we won't have to put up with all of the whining from the Vandal fans when they get yet another ass pounding from some second rate Division II team, let alone the biatch slapping from their southern rivals.

You're right, it's not, but that's not what it would look like.

It would look like this-

The US Army Institute of Heraldry already has official designs out to 56 stars, all with pretty much the same arrangement of simple rows, some staggered, some not.

Why the stupid tag. I would have taking interesting, or even silly, but stupid it is not. How is this any different that when the Dakota split, or matter of fact, any of the the other states (not just the E/W N/S type), most of which at some point broke off on another larger territory.

Anagrammer 2008-04-27 04:31:14 PM
We need to get a 51st state soon, because the US Flag will have 52 stars from 2033 to 2079.

/If you got that, you just passed the geek test
