It appears that ABC is rapidly becoming ad-whores and moving towards a revenue model that puts (click for page 2) every (click for page 3) word (page 4) on a (page 5) separate (page 6) page.

Meanwhile, the age of consent in the U.S. is gradually working it's way up to 25. How about a happy medium?

Anybody else read the second page?

The girl's lawyer is trying to get the legal minimum marriage age moved all the way from 15 to 16. I thought she might actually get some good done until I saw that she thinks that laws matter in Yemen.

Seriously, they do some farked up shiat over there.

Nuke the region from the orbit. There is nothing wholesome about marrying anyone below the age of ten.

headcrack 2008-04-27 05:25:57 PM
8 years old??? What is this world coming to? Used to be you could marry a 10 year old and expect your bride to be a virgin.

Nope. Not in the slightest.

Traditional ethnic holiday celebrating some antiquated event nobody remembers anymore = good (provided it's not an excuse for a lazy afternoon of ethnic cleansing because everyone *does* remember the antiquated event).

Misogyny and child abuse = bad

sneaky jesus 2008-04-27 05:30:44 PM
Listen, she clearly didn't love Jesus enough in the beginning of this ordeal, but you can rest assured and rejoyce in the Lawd that this happened for a reason, and that clearly she has found Jesus and was able to pray just hard enough to be delivered.

ultraholland 2008-04-27 05:31:44 PM
Bondith:

One could argue that many aspects of "celebrating some antiquated event nobody remembers anymore" are in fact, child abuse.

I think (but I could be wrong) that she was trying to make 16 a legal minimum for all marriages. 15 is the legal minimum without parents' consent, but this 8 year old's marriage was legal under current law.

This is a bigger problem than those polyhamists out in Texas. The UN needs to round up all those girls who are child brides and send to foster homes in Europe and North American except for Mexico.

Surely in order to get divorced implies, initially at least, informed consent? For an eight year old, that's just not going to happen.

Shouldn't this alleged marriage be annulled?

Don't be so sure about that. As part of her divorce, she still had to pay him a dowry. Odds all, all she'll get is shiat for divorcing him and breaking with the culture.

It seems that America does have something in common with the Middle East after all. This can be our common ground to start negotiations.

Really, though, as far as I know, no country on the planet has criminalized indoctrination and brainwashing of children, which is a far more damaging and long term form of abuse. Unless you disapprove of people who teach their children their religion as truth (instead of as religion), you don't have much of a right to protest this. Either you approve of actions which hurt children and impair their development, or you don't; anything in between is just "that's what I think is ok."

Either way, the problem isn't the marriage, it's the physical and mental abuse. And by that, I don't mean any specific thing (hitting, sexual contact), but the general violence towards her. Again, unless you disapprove of teaching children religion, you really have no right to say that a marriage is anymore scarring than, say, a baptism or attending church and so on.

And moving up the marriage age (having a marriage laws at all; frankly. There is no reason there need to be ANY laws concerning marriage anymore than we need laws concerning how we celebrate holidays) is just asinine. Those laws just hurt people who have legitimate reasons; whether you think people should or shouldn't marry that young is no more your choice to make than it is their choice how much beer you should be allowed to drink. It's government babysitting, and can be far better served by having stricter laws (and enforcement!) against the types of abuse that happen within them, instead of outright bannination.
