I've actually seen Shawn Lane. And I remember when he died.

Not on that list: Mike Oldfield.

Alan Holdsworth is great.
Too bad this group didn't last more than one album:

I think Jennifer Batten dated Bret Michaels for a while back in the late 80s or early 90s, and she sported a lesbian-style mullet for a while, too.

I'll drink to that. I've been a fan of his since I was 12 ('82). I spent much allowance money tracking down import albums back in the day. If you don't count The Exorcist soundtrack, I've only met two people who've even heard of him.

Back to TFA, I know most of those people, but then I was raised by a musician. Out of the whole list, you should at least know Holdsworth.

Kliffoth [TotalFark] 2008-04-27 11:08:22 AM
Where's Mikael Akerfeldt and Michael Romeo?

I've uncovered about a half-dozen of them here on Fark, oddly enough. I've been collecting his stuff since about 1978 (bought Platinum when it was newly released.)

Yeah, I thought it was odd that Holdsworth was on that list.

Damn, how could I forget Junior Brown. I've worked with him a few times, and know the guy who built his Guit-Steels quite well. Great guy (Junior, that is.)

I don't know, real shaman, if you liked, Rory, you should give Dave Hole a try. King Bee was a delight to listen to, and his use of the slide was BIG FUN! I actually giggled out loud once watching him, it made me so happy!

Pretty good list, but I would have included Steve Morse and Phil Keaggy.

I first heard his music in some community bonus maps for a mod of Unreal Tournament 2004 called Clone bandits. It is part country, part rock and all amazing guitar playing.

When I was about sixteen, I rode in a shuttle bus with Rory Block in conjunction with a folk festival I was volunteering for.

She sang along to the radio throughout the trip, and I've been seriously twitterpated ever since.

You must travel in different circles, because he's quite well known among the techno/ambient set as being a huge influence of Alex Patterson of the Orb. Him and Steve Hillage. It didn't hurt that the Orb also did some amazing mixes of Mike Oldfield either.

/Listening to Rainbow Dome Musick right now...

What about Rory GALLAGHER or Roy Buchanan?

Not obscure enough?

I dont know of ANY one who listens or knows who these two are.

Rev. Gary Davis is obscure??? WTF?

List useless without Neil Hagerty, Steffy Sharpstrings and Steve Stewart.

...and Mike Oldfield is kind of famous in the UK, his first album was kind of popular...

From wikipedia: Tubular Bells stayed in the British charts for over five years, reaching the number 1 spot after more than a year and taking there for one week the place of his second album, Hergest Ridge, thereby becoming one of only three artists in the UK to knock himself off the first spot. It sold more than two million copies in the UK alone and according to some reports 15 to 17 million copies worldwide.

I dropped in to mention those very players. Roy Buchanan has to be one of the best guitar players ever, but sadly, hardly anyone knows him. Rory Gallagher is simply awesome. If you play, you should really try to find some of their albums. I hate to plug them in any way, but I have found some good Roy Buchanan albums on EBay.

Watching many online videos one thing I notice about all newer folks playing old-style acoustic blues, they all seem to be working at it, whereas all the old originals look like they're spooning soup and playing entirely off the cuff.

Only exception was Jimi Hendrix who played just like the originals in that one video.

GypsyJoker 2008-04-27 01:25:58 PM
Wow, that's what I get for not reading TFA, huh? I would have never expected Scotty to be on this list.

Also, check out this guy:

Plays in recent Shakti shows with John McLaughlin and goes toe-to-toe with JM in terms of soul and speed. Simply amazing.

I don't claim to know a lot about music, or guitarists' madd skeels, but Mark Tremonti has some stuff that gives me goosebumps.

Kaeishiwaza 2008-04-27 01:35:12 PM
Is Tim Reynolds too well known for a list like this? He did tour with Dave Matthews, and had an album with him, but I've been to a few of his solo shows and he's a mind-blowing guitarist.

I am downloading about 30 new torrents now, and the ones I like I'll be hunting down hardcopies of.

I'm more of a Coltraine/King/Healey/Vaughan/Gibbons kind of guitarhead...but I'll give all of these a listen.

I'll admit, I'd only heard of two thus far, from TFA and the discussion up to this point.

Alphax 2008-04-27 01:44:54 PM
The headline is accurate: I've not heard of any of them.

Also, if there's any pics, videos, or music with the article, they're all blocked at my work. I'll have to check again from home in a few hours.

MrWhipee 2008-04-27 01:46:55 PM

Sparkimus Prime 2008-04-27 01:53:22 PM

But thanks for coming out. Get your free t-shirt at the door.

Not a bad list, even though I haven't seen or hated some of them. Although Larry Sanders and Curb Your Enthusiasm should be disqualified because they would have filled the list.

It's cool that they included Stan Lee from Mallrats.

"Mick Jagger and I had a running count. Last time I checked, I was way ahead."

"Damn that's hot!"

Kieffer Sutherland and Chloe (I can't spell her real name) on the Simpsons wasn't bad either.

Roy Buchanan isn't exactly obscure. He's not mainstream obviously, and he's incredibly farking awesome, but not obscure (no, not even on Fark).

Yeah, I came here to mention Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton, although Allan Holdsworth at #1 was pretty cool.

And what's Vic Wooten's brother named? He's got this pretty awesome slap guitar thing goin on.
