I've had it. And it's certainly not bad. But a choice between last year's winner, the 18 year Talisker, and the Yoichi 20 year isn't a choice at all. And I don't even think that the Talisker 18 is the best single malt Scotch whisky out there, although it is one of my favorites. Bah, whatever. These kinds of contests are just designed to get people stirred up, anyway.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2008-04-27 11:14:47 AM
Tetsuji Hisamitsu, chief blender at the Yoichi distillery, said he was "very moved" by the award.

Nah, that was just another earthquake.

I'll withhold judgement on this until someone sends me some of this Yoichi stuff, and maybe some Talisker 18 so I can taste them side by side. Hint hint.

Yup. Because someone who'd be chosen as a judge in a whisky blind taste test would have no idea whatsoever about what individual labels and years already tasted like. None at all.

Judging 300 whiskey samples?

Sorry, I give your informed taste test much more credence than any expert's taste buds being that expert. IIRC the French judges couldn't manage it with wine blind taste tests, and judging by their trying to backpedal after finding out the results, they would have if they could.

Doesn't matter to the Japanese, they mix their whiskey with over half water in a highball glass.

I haven't have any Yoichi, but I have had Suntory. The 18 year old is stupedous.

It's a different taste, but delicious.

Those complaining about non-Scottish Scotch are just pretending to be purists, or are so locked into their taste that they aren't willing to concede anything is better than their chosen brew....

Japaneese Whisky will never be the best Whisky. Because as we all know the best Whiskies are Bourbons and Bourbon only comes from Kentucky.

It really is that simple.

I've seen it; what's the big deal?

Oh, that's right. Every time one drinks whisky, he must have his favorite nosing glass and he must only drink that which is accepted by the Community as worthy, and every sip must be treasured as a blessing from God himself.

I taste, and I drink. The two are separate activities.

Besides, Scotch is made to be drunk with some water. And once you add water, from three drops to three drams, you don't change the flavor profile. Just the proof.

They spit it out after tasting.

I know, heresy, but some people actually like to do that. Me, I'll drink. Alcohol poisoning is worth it for the best Scotches in the world.

I was just watching a program last night on the History channel about whiskey, but I only caught the last 15 minutes or so. That, and drastically exceeding my limits the first, last and only time I drank any (Makers Mark) leaves me unable to contribute to the conversation.

Actually, I've had some excellent scotch in the far-east. The 18YO Nikka comes to mind.

Actually, the Japanese have been doing whiskey and whisky since the 20s. They do love their bourbon, but there are still more folks doing Scotch than bourbon.

It's cheap as hell too. $18.99 for a 1.75L

Well, the Japanese are serious alcoholics. Ireland, Scotland and Germany have the reputation but the Japs are serious boozers.

Doesn't mean they make the best stuff though.

Not a whiskey snob. I like it, but I can't justify spending much over $30 for 750ml.. so I go Glenlivet 12yr, Jameson, Knob Creek, and Woodford Reserve.
If anyone knows of anything somewhat widely available and somewhat reasonably priced that I should try, I'm all ears.

If you are going to mix it 50/50 with water you should be drinking something else. It is like when my girlfriend uses my Belvedere to make mixed drinks.

Awamori FTW.

Give me a goodly portion of this stuff, a beach anywhere in the Ryukyus, and a Japanese cutie, and you can kill me right then and there. I'll die a happy man.
