Dear Argentina:

You lost. As a consolation prize you sank the Sheffield.

Get over it.

THIS.

They're such assholes about it, too. I loved when I was living in Chile, the Chileans would refer to them as Las Islas Falkland, just to piss of the boludos Argentinos.

Indeed, and 1982 was the worst possible year they could have chosen. Britain was still at the height of their naval power. They hadn't started scaling back their navy until 1979. And the Argentinian Navy hadn't even learned the lessons the rest of the world did during the Second World War: Carriers are superior to heavy cruisers and battleships.

If Argentina, as a country, is looking to place blame on someone for the debacle then they should look no further than their politicians and military planners.

Which is not to say they didn't really struggle. The only available carrier fighter was the Harrier and some of those were transported in pieces on the decks of RFA ships. There were no/not enough dedicated troopships available, so the royal yacht was called up. It was four years before I was born, but looking back I can't see how people couldn't be ashamed of the state of the forces and how much they had to beg, steal and borrow for force projection.

Well, they *are* necessary for Britain... they need them for strategic sheep purposes.

Why are they using print encyclopedias? Don't they the internet? Schools should be using Wikipedia. First they should be taught how to evaluate sources, but Wikipedia is just as accurate or more accurate than print encyclopedias.

I'm a lover of books, but print encyclopedia's really should die.

The three things I know about Argentina:
- Silver (argentum) is named from Argentina (I think..)
- Some of them play football (or is that Brazil?)
- They got their behinds handed to them by the Brits in the Falkland war

Well, I can never shake the thought of a natural disaster widespread enough to knock out all computers/electricty - so I kinda prefer having knowledge stored in print somewhere for later retrieval

I'm not sure how the article you linked to, or the studies it referred to, show that wikipedia is 'just as or more accurate' than print encyclopaedias. The test carried out by Nature.com found that wikipedia articles contained 33% more errors than Encyclopaedia Britannica. In terms of accuracy, wikipedia is closer than you might think, but it is not a superior source and certainly shouldn't signal the end for print encyclopaedias.

Here is one reason why I do like Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hms_sheffield
Sheffield (D80) (1971) - Type 42 destroyer badly damaged by the Argentinians on 4 May 1982 during the Falklands War. Was being towed to South Georgia when she sank in heavy seas.
Sheffield (F96) (1986) - Type 22 frigate sold to Chile in 2003 and renamed Almirante Williams.

So, the ship the Argentinians sank was reborn into a ship later sold to the Chileans, who I believe have not always been friendly with their Eastern neighbor.

So Silver wasn't discovered until Argentina existed as a country?

Are you sure it might not be the other way around? Given that argentum is latin and all..

It's hard to tell sometimes on the Internet.

I remember the Falklands War. The ONLY good things to come out of that are the huge penguin reserves in the land mined areas and the collapse of the corrupt and evil Argentine government. You think we have problems with our government? The Argentine thugs were kidnapping political opponents and dumping them naked into the south Atlantic, kidnapping babies and children and causing whole families to "disappear." The Falklands war was created by Argentina to divert the population from their corruption and it failed spectacularly!

I also remember how just about every liberal in the U.S. was on Argentina's side during the conflict because the British were "Imperialists." It made no difference to them how corrupt the Argentine government was. That war taught me a lot actually.

To bad we couldn't just invade some island off the coast of Iraq.

The nation of Argentina really has no claim to the Falklands. The Falklands really aren't even close to Argentina.

Also, what Delawheredad said.

Aye, after the scuffle, Argentina set up the Emergency Penguin Reserve, to make sure they never run out of penguins again in times of war.

Argentina went completely off the deep end in the 1930s and never got it back together after that. Is there brown acid in the water there or what?

miniflea 2008-04-27 01:47:14 PM
My girlfriend is Uruguan, and I have to say, every time I read something about Argentina, it just confirms what she says. They're a bunch of sensationalist douchebags who take themselves way, way, way too seriously. I remember she told me that when some popular Argentinian musician died (Diego something I think?) they went to the Vatican and asked the pope to declare him a saint. Seriously. Just cause the guy was popular.

Agreed. Argentina once had a standard of living and per capita GNP equal to or greater than western european nations. It goes to show you what happens to a nation when they follow populist leaders who impose massive gov't intervention and redistributionist policies - they become third world nations.

I am going to go out on a limb and say diffrent ships same name.

From wikipedia

HMS Sheffield (C24) was one of the Southampton sub class of the Town class cruisers of the Royal Navy during the Second World War. She took part in actions against several major German warships.

HMS Sheffield (D80) was the second Royal Navy ship to bear the name Sheffield, after the city of Sheffield in Yorkshire. She was a Type 42 Guided Missile Destroyer laid down by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering at Barrow-in-Furness on 15 January 1970, launched on 10 June 1971 and commissioned on 16 February 1975.

HMS Sheffield (F96) was a Type 22 frigate of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. She was originally intended to be named Bruiser but was named Sheffield in honour of the previous Sheffield (D80), a Type 42 destroyer sunk in the Falklands War.

Had Argentina waited a year the UK would have had a much more difficult time trying to retake the Falklands due to scheduled cutbacks in the Royal Navy.

A similar situation has developed today:
