TFA: "This device has changed my life," she told a room full of women in suburban Miami last week. "I no longer live in fear. I challenge you all with one question. How will you defend yourself if you're attacked?"

I think that this may be the single most pathetic thing I have ever read.

So, despite the rate of violent crime in the US is declining to it's lowest level in 2005 since records were started, the TASER(TM) Corporation is peddling their business of fear and helping to put weapons in the hands of people untrained in their use and uninterested in the outcomes. Great.

I wish more people would realize that firearms are the best defense against criminals, and really evens the playing field for women.

Anyone else think people aren't taking tasers seriously enough? Hell, earlier this morning I watched cops at my school use a taser on some ridiculously drunk kid who freaked and tried to run off. maybe it's acceptable to use one instead of the very short chase needed to catch this kid, but were the subsequent 4 shocks really needed?

Sure, he was still "trying to get away" officer. Who be be writhing in pain if they just froze up running full speed and slammed into the ground?

I hate fear mongerers too, but a declining rate doesn't mean a low rate, and it's irrelevant when you're the one being attacked.

At least he wasn´t shot. I consider the cops Tasering a fleeing suspect to be a form of operant social conditioning. Learn how to lie to police, people. It´s not hard.

Forget banning guns. If I ever campaigned to ban any weapon, it would be tasers. As someone else said, nobody takes them seriously.

How would I suggest women defend themselves?

No, not likely. Unless you are expecting some sort of road-warrioresque economic downturn. People simply just don't jump from honest law-abiding citizens to violent criminals simply because they couldn't afford a new television.

I know pessimism is fun, but the only spike we will see in those numbers will occur if the government criminalize something currently legal.

An increasing trend, that's possible. A spike just isn't likely.

How stupid. The taser is absolutely useless unless 1) it's readily available at all times (that is, not buried with the rest of your crap in your bookbag or purse), and 2) you're willing to use it at all.

You also have to wonder if they give a sense of over-confidence and/or encourage stupid behavior. Would these women engage in high-risk behavior (that is, not avoid getting into a situation in the first place) because they think their magical taser will save them if danger arose?

gluestickralph 2008-04-27 09:47:15 AM

Points 1 and 2 are spot-on. You need to have weapons right at hand for them to be useful. Since most criminals are planning a crime--and you are not--they have the jump on you. And most people overestimate their willingness to hurt other people, even when justified.

As for "stupid behavior?" Most of the people I know who have been placed in danger by stupid behavior are men. Most women are pretty cautious in their behavior, even if they are armed.

Eh, Gluestickralph had it right. He was making a joke about the misreporting of the .38 (inch) revolver as a ".38mm" revolver, which would be about the right size for a mouse to carry as a sidearm. Instead, he was opting for the 38mm revolver. Note the lack of a decimal point. This almost-equally unlikely sidearm would have a barrel diameter of about 1 and 1/2 inches. Hence the "small cannon ftw" comment. I personally carry a 10mm Kahr Arms pistol, which is adequate for personal defense. A 38mm revolver would be a one-shot gun, since the recoil would break the wrist of the user. But that one shot should be adequate to bring down a rhino or a schoolbus.

She had previously slept with a baseball bat by her bed and later a knife stashed under her pillow before she fell in love with the first stun gun marketed directly at women. "The Taser is my seatbelt for life," she enthused. "There is now no longer any day when I believe I am going to get raped or assaulted."

That woman has issues. I'd love to know how many times she was almost raped or almost assaulted. My guess is zero.

Oh Yeah, S&W ran (don't know if they still are) extensive fear mongering ad campaigns aimed at women and their need to defend themselves from the stranger in the parking lot (the black, hispanic, brown stranger).

It would be better if they ran ads showing them defending themselves against their drunk, abusive boyfriends, husbands, fathers, brothers, because that is more accurate.

Of course, as I learned people are less willing to actually defend themselves against family and friends, much less shoot them.

Reality is a biatch.

Unless the food supply is significantly disrupted. Once diesel hits close to $6/gallon, expect a lot of trucking companies to disappear, then how will people get their food that is not produced in their region. When people can't eat, it gets ugly.

From whom are women most frequently defending themselves? It isn't the (large black or brown) stranger that most gun advocates imagine. It is men they know, boyfriends, husbands, fathers, brothers, and uncles.

A lot of the same people I hear advocate for firearms for women's "safety" also seem to get upset about the women who shoot their husbands and get off for self-defense (you may not be like that). The reality is that women aren't as endangered by strangers as they are by men they already know.

I am not against women learning about firearms for safety, but it has to be put in the proper context, and it rarely is.

Ok, for one point, we have PrincessOfPenguins blaming the victim.

And we have another two points to meekychuppet, who succinctly denied both sexual assault statistics and minimized the threat of sexual assault that most women live with.

Who else is up to play?

The purpose of the taser is well summed up in the article. It gives these women freedom to exercise the same caution as a man; it empowers them. Identifying their 'recklessness' (also known as freedom) as a danger to them is the same as blaming them for being assaulted.

But you only got one point because you aren't spiteful, only misled.

WTF is "high risk behavior?" Doing dumb/vulnerable things? Well, that's most crime victims of both sexes. But women I know are less likely to do high-risk stuff than most males, which is why men are more likely to to crime victims. Apparently, guys feel they will be saved by the magical peener.
