Pretty old news for Maiden fans, but cool video nonetheless. The Eddie bobblehead on the instrument panel was a nice touch. Up the Irons!

Rocker Bruce to the rescue

Posted on 07/26/2006 6:08:57 PM PDT by Paleo Conservative

HEAVY metal star Bruce Dickinson was returning to Britain last night after airlifting 200 Beirut evacuees to safety.

The Iron Maiden singer, also a professional pilot, flew a Boeing 757 to Cyprus, where the Brits had fled to escape the violence.

After touching down at RAF Akrotiri on the Med island, Bruce waited for the fully-boarded plane to be re-fuelled before being given clearance to fly back to Gatwick.

The mercy mission was the idea of the rocker, whose Iron Maiden hits include Run To The Hills and Sanctuary.

Dad-of-three Bruce, 47, is a first officer with London-based charter airline Astraeus.

A colleague said: "He was only too keen to get involved and help. He has a strong interest in the welfare of people caught up in international conflicts and cares about what is going on."

The first Brits to flee war-torn Lebanon, mostly women and children, had landed at Gatwick airport yesterday looking exhausted but relieved.

By yesterday more than 1,000 Brit nationals and dual nationals had been ferried to safety in Cyprus by Royal Navy ships in the biggest war zone evacuation since Dunkirk in the Second World War.

Actually, the SIC gets some recognition. The SIC's picture IS on the tail, after all . . .

Did he prepare for liftoff with Aces High jammin the loudspeakers?

There goes the siren that warns of the air raid
Then comes the sound of the guns sending flak
Out for the scramble we've got to get airborne
Got to get up for the coming attack.

Jump in the cockpit and start up the engines
Remove all the wheelblocks there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before it's too late.

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. aces high.

Move in to fire at the mainstream of bombers
Let off a sharp burst and then turn away
Roll over, spin round and come in behind them
Move to their blindsides and firing again.

Bandits at 8 o'clock move in behind us
Ten ME-109's out of the sun
Ascending and turning our spitfires to face them
Heading straight for them I press down my guns

Rolling, turning, diving
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live, aces high.

Also, his cousin is Rob Dickinson, the dude from Catherine Wheel.

That was a fun interview, I was unaware of his pilotese. I've run up against that whole "pilots need X hours of sleep before working" rule, it's nearly caused me some missed connections, but I thought it was only like 8 hours or so and only affected morning flights. Wouldn't imagine rock stars would get up to fly at 8:00am, if they had that whole day/night off. On a tour I'd think he'd likely only be traveling 1 or 2 hour jaunts at a time, if they mapped it out right. I must be missing something here.

I would just like to apologize right now for the rampant stupidity of people in my generation who only remember the name Bruce Dickinson from an SNL sketch, and not the greatness that is The Bruce Dickinson of the greatness that is Iron Maiden. I guess not everyone was fortunate enough to be introduced to them at the age of 3, such as I was.

I agree. Bad interview too. Looks like she'd rather be talking to JT and Britney! That's the problem when a major network interviews a metal band, they don't have a clue! "So, how do you get from the plane to your hotel room?" Did you spend three years at Journalism School to ask a question like that?

Yes, I'm well aware of that. It's a five minute sketch which gave us an asinine catchphrase for kids to spout endlessly. The Walken character is hardly the definitive article, to quote a certain Doctor.

I've got tickets to see them again in June. Saw them first in '86 and several times since.

Any young(er) folks here would do well to catch them live at least once. There has never been a more consistently excellent live band - and I've seen a LOT of great bands.

FARK.com: (2608979) Members of Glasgow Rangers football team flying to Israel surprised to discover their pilot is Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. 'We were wondering if the cabin crew would be Ozzy Osbourne,' says one

Not Ozzy but when they fly the VIP fans to special gigs (there was one in Iceland recently I think) Nicko McBrain, the drummer, doubles up as the worlds ugliest cabin crew.

Muse are on their way up as Great-Live-Act-of-the-Decade, more whiny but holy shiat what a show. But yeah, good advice, Maiden give you more than your money's worth.

I don't know, are you having the same problems? My arms don't want to fit through the zipper and the loops are way too small for my penis. This is frustrating.

"Up the Irons", to those who were asking, is an English way of saying "Support Iron Maiden!" It grew out of the phrase, "Up the Hammers", which refers to Steve Harris' favorite footie team, West Ham.
