kingMountain: why do i have the sudden sinking feeling that no matter what, this guy is going to win the election?

don't worry. the democrats are duking it out right now, but that will be settled soon. they'll still have plenty of time to campaign against mccain.

right now he's getting a free ride in the MSM, but it is so incredibly easy to attack the man... you really only have to use his own words against him. edward r. murrow style... just "interview" clips of him speaking, or whatever. his own words will destroy him.

you remember "read my lips, no new taxes"? that was one sentence. this guy has millions of sound bytes that make him sound like a retard.

kingMountain: yeah but bush won on that, right, the first time around?

the "read my lips" line was what clinton ran nonstop on commercials against george h.w. bush, and was probably the most memorable and effective attack against him.

you might be right if it won him the election the first time, but it lost it for him the second time. i'm not sure about the first one, i was 6 years old at the time.

but that's what i was getting at. the reason it worked is because bush said one thing, then did another. mccain does that A LOT.

Yeah, I guess Hitler didn't finish the job, did he...

Is there anyone who thinks that Hamas has tried to, will try to, or ever could attack the U.S.? Hamas is an enemy of Israel, not the U.S. Is that a distinction we even recognize any more?

Did anyone think that some A-hole named Bin Laden would attack the US before 9/11? Did we do something to him first to cause the attacks?

When you get it through your skull that America is NOT the world's policeman, or the mommy that comes along to tell little Iran to stop pulling Iraq's hair, you'll start to understand why it doesn't need a 'sick justification' to allow these things to happen.

/ And yes, it is Bush's fault. Saddam wasn't a nice guy, but at least more Iraqis were alive with him around - and he was able to keep relative peace in the country. Something America still can't handle.

Did anyone think that some A-hole named Bin Laden would attack the US before 9/11?

Yes. Not least because it was his publicly stated intention:
"On that basis, and in compliance with Allah's order, we issue the following fatwa to all Muslims:

The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilians and military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it, in order to liberate the al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy mosque [Mecca] from their grip, and in order for their armies to move out of all the lands of Islam, defeated and unable to threaten any Muslim.

...

We -- with Allah's help -- call on every Muslim who believes in Allah and wishes to be rewarded to comply with Allah's order to kill the Americans and plunder their money wherever and whenever they find it. We also call on Muslim ulema, leaders, youths, and soldiers to launch the raid on Satan's U.S. troops and the devil's supporters allying with them, and to displace those who are behind them so that they may learn a lesson."

steelpeg: Did anyone think that some A-hole named Bin Laden would attack the US before 9/11? Did we do something to him first to cause the attacks?

...well, considering A) He had done so before, 2) He had just recently renewed his attacks on American interests, and D) He had been doing this for a good 15 years prior to 9/11 with a message as clear as the beard on his face, I'd say...yeah, everyone thought he'd do it. What no one thought is that the Bush administration would take all of the previous intel and defenses against him actually succeeding in doing it and smashing them to the ground just as he implemented...and thus succeeded. That remains the ultimate failure on the Bush administration.

Actually about ten years. He didn't really focus on the US until after 1990 when the Sauds rejected his offer to lead a bunch of Mujahedin veterans from the war in Afghanistan against Saddam Hussein, issued a warrant for his arrest and forced him into exile while inviting American troops to set up camp in the Holy Land.

You might have put it more gracefully, but you are correct in pointing out that ANY course of action that one takes in a cluster-fark like the mid-east is going to involve some difficult moral choices.
But that is true, no matter what choices we make, and that brings us down to making the WISEST choice - wisest for our own nation, and our own people. Our days of playing cop and nanny to the whole damn world need to end, if we are to survive as a nation. It has failed. We are bankrupt, we have compromised our own dearly-held principles, and accomplished nothing.
It is not a choice to be made lightly, but I must insist (with my vote, anyway) that we start minding our own business, and leave the rest of the world to solve it's own problems. And you should not deceive yourself - it is far more that a few Berkely-ite, Che Guevara T-shirt wearing lefties who feel this way. I, for my part, am about as confirmed of an old-school right winger as you're going to find - and I'm sick and tired of this crap. I has gotten US, the American people, nothing but an exhausted treasury, dead soldiers, and the sputum of an ungrateful world in our faces. Fark 'em. Let them learn to live as civilized men, or perish.

The electoral college system is unfair because it no longer takes into account the actual will of the people.
Now, most of the time, its pretty close once you average it all out, but the system was designed such that you would elect a local-ish representative that you trust to go and weigh the options and cast a vote for the candidate that would best carry out the duties of the office.
Now, we've done away with proportional representation (winner takes all bullshiat), and we've done away with the idea of voting for a representative. We, as a people, vote for President without even knowing the representative's name who is re-casting our vote.
Since the representative always, ALWAYS, just votes for the guy they signed up to represent, we are just voting for President with a majority rule in each state. Thats it.
Thus, either the electoral college needs to be abolished and the vote needs to be made a nationwide majority (because, lets face it, a vote for a democrat in a state like Mississippi is just self-disenfrachisement. Just like a vote for a republican in MA.
Either that, or it needs to be returned to the way it was, which... isn't going to happen, nor should it.
A good compromise would be doing away with the winner takes all crap, so that everyone's vote everywhere counts.

The only people who still call themselves republican are pro-war. War mongering during primaries was a sop to them. As he moves toward the general election he will start equivocating on war or tiangulating it, citing its usefulness and uselessness in the same statement. There is'nt snowball's chance in hell that this guy will win in November, mark my words, he will lose and lose big, by atleast 7-15%. Media is busy manufacturing these polls depicting a close race because they want to keep the tension built in for ratings. These polls are pure fiction.

McCain was the neocons' candidate in 2000, McCain adhered to a truer version of the faith during the early years of hubris that followed September 11, and as president McCain would likely pursue policies that will make what we've seen from Bush look like a pale imitation of the real thing. McCain, after all, is the candidate of perpetual war in Iraq.

Not true.

America has used its UN veto more times than every other member combined. Most of those times, it's vetoing anti-Israel actions put forward by other countries. Which is pretty hard to swallow by the rest of the UN, since America doesn't pay its dues as a member.
