Yeah. Why couldn't have picked a more worthwhile cause, like Darfur or....weed.

/at least a beer tax would cause my alchy friends to get jobs
//all of the potheads I know have become fairly productive (typically in legal ways!) to pay for the cost of herb, so there.
///except the kids mom who just gives him some, he hasn't done crap since hs...4 yrs ago

What if they just taxed shiatty beer like Milwaukee's Best or Heineken? That should be alright....right?

i saw a misplaced apostrophe a little while ago on the organic, pesticide-free "clementine's" at Whole Foods. I nearly laughed up my prosciutto and brie panini with alfalfa sprouts and 7-grain mustard!

true story.

I heard these guys also re-enacted the boston tea party, only they dumped their beer in the bay.

Nobody noticed for some reason.

Just guessing here, but the "san francisco suprise" isn't something most members of the Young Republicans want.

/ Unless they prefer wide stances, that is.

"Beall said the tax would generate up to $2 billion a year for crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking."

Hmm the simple fact of the extra money should keep the underage people from drinking... one less drink a night.

I'm sure the 2 Billion wouldn't go for a new gold plated Limo for the good old congressman.

that is the same argument that is used for increasing the tax on everything there. Extra money will somehow magically prevent children from doing XYZ and it will do crime prevention blah blah blah. But look at where the bill puts the money, in the general fund if history is any indicator. It *all* goes into the general fund and never goes towards whatever it was supposed to, end result the government has more money but its not spent any better.

There was a big issue a while back over the road tax that was supposed to pay for um you guessed it, roads. It was just going into the general fund and the roads were not being repaired. Trying to change it back caused a big stink about how the government will collapse if road tax money actually went to repair the roads.

Mailorder cigarettes dont have the additional california tax why would mailorder alcohol?

A fool and his money are soon parted

Tax does not necessarily equate to evil.

Unless, of course, it all goes to pay for a stupid and pointless war.

Beer is more important than the U.S. Constitution in a GOPers eyes, no doubt.

I've met the San Jose college republicans. They were... well let's put it this way: Take Bush. Subtract thirty years. Add Tourette's. Their outbursts during meetings at which most of the people who ran the colleges were actually trying to do their jobs were just that moronic.

Also, as a note: San Jose is not San Francisco. San Jose is larger than San Francisco. San Jose also has a rather large conservative population, unlike San Francisco.

You mean to tell me that when I'm down at the pub (The Field, downtown San Diego, genuine Irish everything, including waitresses) and I want my stew and a pint, I have to pay extra for that pint because someone thinks that my few cents will stop a child from buying a beer?

Bugger that, I'll start handing out random beers if that happens.
